Book Description
Honored by universities, ministries, and institutions nationwide, called into service in the administration of two presidents, Samuel DeWitt Proctor, Th.D. has established himself as a preeminent theologian, orator, and educator in this country. In The Substance of Things Hoped For, he takes us on a personal journey that begins with his grandparents' slavery and which ends with his vision of a full fruition of the African-American experience, and a celebration of the tie that holds African-American together: simple, tenacious faith.
A child of the segregation-era south, Proctor is no stranger to unwarranted hatred and widespread ignorance. He has fought against racism all his life -- in his schools, in his communities, and at the pulpit. In this compelling memoir, he candidly reveals the tumult of the civil rights movement in which he was deeply involved, the bitterness and anger of youths then that has exploded into the hopelessness, rage and despair of today's youths who feel they have no future. But through all of these times, Dr. Proctor has always been a beacon of hope; here, he recounts those inspiring times when his faith has shined brightest.
One man's positive plan for today's society, The Substance of Things Hoped For is inspiration at its most heartfelt, delivered with warmth and conviction, and founded in a lifetime of faith and reflection.

An examination of morality, hope, and faith.......2002-08-21
The best thing next to having heard the late Dr. Proctor speak is reading this memoir. This is the story of Proctor, and his journey from a young man to becoming the beacon of hope and faith that he was, and in our memories and hearts still is for so many. It is a story of survival, faith, hope, and progress which speaks not only through the black community, but through all of humanity.
Passionate memoir from one of America's greatest preachers........1999-05-26
I checked out The Substance of Things Hoped for from the Newark Public Library and have listened to it three times during the past three days. I was always deeply moved whenever I heard Rev. Proctor preach and hearing his voice read his text was marvelous. I was a bit uncomfortable with some of his observations about accountability, and the reasons why Blacks are not doing as well as they should. I also find his points difficult to reconcile with Dr. Beerly Tatum Daniels' book "Why do all the Black kids sit together in the cafeteria." Rev. Proctor is unapologetic for his views and has the moral authority to advocate them. A remarkable book.
Magnificent........1998-06-09
The text was so mesmorizing that I read it in 2 days. I read it in 2 days. Dr. Proctor should have written more. I am glad that I have heard him speak before he was laid to rest. Reading the book was like hearing him preach and extended sermon non-stop.

Book Description
As director of the Jerhattan Parapsychic Center, telepath Rhyssa Owen coordinated the job assignments for psychically gifted Talents. And though she had her hands full dealing with the unreasonable demand for kinetics to work on the space platform that would be humankind's stepping-stone to the stars, she was always ready to welcome new Talents to the Center.
Feisty and streetwise, twelve-year-old Tirla used her extraordinary knack for languages to eke out a living in the Linear developments, where the poor struggled to make ends meet and children were conscripted or sold into menial work programs. Young Peter, paralyzed in a freak accident, hoped someday to get into space where zero gravity would enable him to function more easily. Both desperately needed help only other Talents could provide.
With the appearance in her life of one extraordinary man with no measurable Talent at all, Rhyssa suddenly found herself questioning everything she thought she knew about her people. And when two Talented children were discovered to have some very unusual -- and unexpected -- abilities, she realized that she would have to reassess the potential of all Talentkind...
Download Description
Earth has reached its darkest moment. In subterranean warrens, the poor eke out precarious lives where jobs are scarce and children are sold for labor -- while on the surface, a privileged few enjoy lives of luxury. As the population surges and unrest spreads, a disaster of epic proportions seems inescapable. The only hope: a platform under construction in space from which starships will be launched to colonize distant planets. But the project is critically behind schedule.
In the midst of the chaos, Rhyssa Owen and her fellow Talents -- telepaths who read minds, kinetics who manipulate matter, and precogs to whom the future is an open book -- struggle to survive. Then two children are discovered whose extraordinary psychic gifts have the potential to avert the looming catastrophe -- or hasten its ominous arrival.

stuff duh.......2007-01-22
For those who have read To Ride Pegasus and the Talent series, Pegasus in Flight holds quite a few familiar surprises.
One curious oddity is the titling of the two Pegasus books. Oddly enough, Pegasus In Flight was published before To Ride Pegasus. Even more interesting are the characters. It is recommended that you don't read the two books in order of publishing-instead, start on To Ride Pegasus and then move on to this also fine novel.
The most interesting features of this novel are the appearances of familiar characters from other Talent Series books or their descendants or ancestors. We see Sascha Roznine, undoubtedly a relative of Vascha Roznine in TRP; we see Dorotea Horvarth and her son Miklos; Rhyssa Owen is undoubtedly the daughter of Daffy op Owen; and perhaps most heartening of all, we see the first Peter Reidinger. Later, in the Talent books, his descendant would become one of the best and most explosive personalities. This all is very good, as it binds the novel to others in the series.
Pegasus in Flight takes place one generation after To Ride Pegasus and centuries before the Rowan books. A call for Talents to work on the world-wide project of Padrugoi, which would be the stepping stone of mankind to the heavens, is led by the brutal Russian engineer Ludmilla Ivanova Barchenka, who will stop at nothing to strip Earth of its Talents. In the midst of this gigantic, frenetic circus of a project lies foul play-Rhyssa, her future love interest, and others uncover terrifying statistics of some "accidents" that have been occuring on Padrugoi.
In the meantime, Tirla is a scruffy girl living in the dark Linears of Jerhattan. Here she ekes out a living by helping alleyway mothers elude the illegal-peoples check as well as doing various other deeds. Her knack for languages makes her an important person in the Linear G-unknownst to her, this "knack" is actually a very strong Talent. In the meantime, Tirla struggles to elude the perverted Yassim, who deals in unsavory uses of children stolen from the Linea this book grs or sold by their parents.
Young Peter Reidinger was an ordinary boy until he was suddenly paralyzed. This paralysis forced his mind to transfer motor functions to another part of the brain-and gave him a powerful Talent.
Rhyssa, Sascha, Dave Lehardt and the other Talented strive to save the kidnapped Tirla and Peter whilst evading Ludmilla Barchenka's persistent assaults for kinetic Talents. And as they do, they meet danger, love, and dark plots and conspiracies head on.
Pegasus in Flight is rather disappointing when compared to its beautifully written followers. The plot was wonderfully done, only very often Anne would convolute or add some sort of detailing, or just something that would make it a little more "muddled". There are several very dry points, as in To Ride Pegasus, but there are some really wonderful scenes and pages and chapters that warrant reading over and over again.
Mostly Pegasus in Flight is a rather fine novel, but given a choice over this or the, say Rowan or Damia, the other Talent would win. Series fans must read-as for others, it is a very good stepping stone into the Talent world, giving the reader a full immersion into this far-future series, but the Rowan serves the purpose just as well. Try it-you just might like it.
Wonderful Psychic Fantasy.......2006-02-11
This it a fantastic light sci-fi, dealing with the doings of Talents, psychically gifted people in not-so-distant future, when space travel is just begining to be explored. Even though I love this book, I wouldn't recommend the two "prequels" Wings of Pegasus and To Ride Pegasus. They don't involve the same characters, and Pegasus in Flight stands on its own. The sequel, Pegasus in Space, is also excellent, and is actually a continuation of this book. This is an excellent book for teens, and very similar to the X-men movies.
Getting better, an improvement on the last book.......2004-12-22
The writing here is tighter, and the plot is better. I liked the part about Tirla the best. I hope she has the best of luck!
The second part I liked was about Dortea playing the grandmother role. The funniest part was where she telepathically fusses at Sascha over the bill that Tirla has acquired over new clothing for herself. *grins*
Thumbs up for Daffyd. Who is better suited, ethically speaking, to the role as director for the parapsychic institute.
Not quite as good as the others, but better than TRP.
Book 2 in the Pegasus series.......2004-05-17
Anne McCaffrey is the greatest. This book continues the story of psychically Talented individuals in the near future. The characters are getting filled out more in this book. You have to read this one second. Don't try to read it before To Ride Pegasus. Actually they could have easily been combined into one book. They are available as a double set and that is how I bought my copies. This series is a wonderful look at "what if" in our own society. A great read!!! Definitly follow up on the story by reading Pegasus in Space.
Better than the first Pegasus.......2001-08-16
With the end of the second book I was disappointed that it had ended. At fisrt I was not overly thrilled that the main characters from "To Ride Pegasus" were used, but by the middle I was truly enjoying these new characters. I was overly joyed when Doreta returned but as an older woman giving some link between the first two novels. When I picked up the third novel I was pleased that the characters from this book continue on. I still wonder at the limit of Peter's Talent, and besides her natural Talent for languages Tirla has some other Talents that are still hidden. The topic of child theft and their use as a labour force on farms, in mines, and as prostitutes is somthing most of use may not think about but occurs all time in all countries, in one form or another. Yet the story also shows us that children can have the greatest impact on use personally and on society if they are given a chance to succeed. With hints from other reviewers that there is a link between this an the Rowan series I may have to start that one soon.

Book Description
Dawn Miller's marvelous debut novel is a grand adventure -- and a glorious love story -- experienced with all the passion and yearning of a heroine you'll never forget: eighteen-year-old Callie Wade, whose hopeful heart is as rich with promise as the frontier, which calls her family from their Missouri farm to a new life out West. The Journal Of Callie Wade invites us into a world long vanished, brought to life once more in the pages of a young pioneer woman's diary.
April 12, 1859: "What you can't duck, you best welcome." That's what Mama used to always say, anyway....Even though it was in me to fight going West, I couldn't; there's a light in Pa's eyes, a kind of hope that our Rose will find health and I see it in Jack's eyes, too. As wild and reckless as my brother can be, I know he dreams of better. When I look into Quinn's eyes I feel my own dreams, too...and the love. But everything is so unsure on the trail. Sitting here, staring at the scattered campfires of the train, I can almost hear the prayers to make it through another dust-choked mile, over another river, another birth...another death. Maybe Pa is right, maybe we'll all have a new chance at life in the West. But at what price?
From bitter hardships to moments of shining joy, from unexpected friendships to Callie's blossoming love for Irishman Quinn McGregor, The Journal Of Callie Wade is a chronicle of courage and faith, an inspiring tale of hope and endurance to treasure for years to come.

Customer Reviews:
Traveling the Trail.......2006-04-24
This is the story of Callie Wade, an 18 year old woman who leaves behind all she's known in Missouri to travel with her family to California. Callie is a thoughtful writer who recounts the days' events faithfully as she finds herself facing more hardships than she ever imagined. Not only is the trail an unforgiving obstacle to be overcome, but Callie must fight off unwanted suitors as she finds herself falling unwillingly in love. Managing her own personal losses as she strives to stay positive begins to take its toll as the road seems never-ending and Callie finds herself battling her own hopelessness at times.
Realistically done, this is a fine novel that brings to life the incredible hardships the pioneers faced as they moved across our country in the 1800s. There is plenty of predictable heartbreak, but there is joy, too, and we come to understand that it is the glimpses of that joy that made the journey worthwhile for so many. Based on a family story, Miller has written convincingly and touchingly of a time that many of us today could not begin to imagine. Highly recommended!
AN ABSOLUTE JEWEL OF A BOOK.......2004-08-01
I loved this book. I loved that it contained all a good book should...some historical background, excitement, intensity, and romance.
Callie Wade is leaving her hometown, Independence, to go out west with her Pa, her brother Jack, and her little sister Rose. Rose is a little girl of a sickly constitution and the journey is mostly made to see if California will help cure her, as she is failing where she is and hope could be found out west. Callie is soon torn between caring for dear little rose, and the handsome Irishman, Quinn MgGregor. Should she stay with her sister and always care for her, or marry the man she loves? Well anyway, Callie's journey is filled with trial and hardship, but also with triumph and love.
This book was amazing. There is a little scene with Quinn that could be left out of the story, but if you just skip over it this book was PERFECT. I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! well, read and enjoy!!!
Power to the women!.......2004-06-01
"The Journal of Callie Wade" is full of hope, sorrow, joy, and truth. Dawn Miller wrote a diary that reads fast - too fast. I didn't want the story to end. I wanted it to go on forever, to see how their lives lived out in their new homes. This book is another perfect example of what women endured while traveling to find new homes and lives. A strong and powerful message is conveyed. I recommend.
Wonderful!.......2003-04-07
I initially chose to read this book because of the pretty cover. I also love historical journal/diary form books. This seemed like a perfect pick for me. Boy, am I glad I chose it! This has become my favorite book of all time. I make a point to read it every two years. If I read it any sooner, I will remember everything and it won't be as exciting.
Callie Wade is angry at her father for dragging her away from the house she loves, her best friend, and the life that she has known forever. Using a diary her mother gave her before she died, Callie records the perilous, and sometimes wonderful events of her wagon train ride west. She records illnesses on the train, including her young sister, Rose's. She also records her blossoming love for a mysterious blacksmith named Quinn.
She must learn to deal with the dangers of wagon life, from dealing with death to dealing with a devilish preacher's son. Throughout it all, Callie's endurance and her love for Quinn and Rose is constant.
This is a marvelous book. Warning to readers: Do not listen to reviewers beforehand who claim that this book is not very good because it is not accurate. If some minute detail isn't correct, the outstanding characters and the plot itself makes up for it. This is a charming book that will endear itself to your heart forever!
A Story in Journal Format!.......2001-02-28
I enjoyed this story of a young woman's journey via wagon train from Missouri to California. It was well written and easy to read, however, I found myself wishing for a MAP and kept pulling out the modern day atlas to track their journey. I wished Ms. Miller had included a rough map of what the territories were like in the period in which this was written. It would have better emphasized the reading (like Nancy E. Turner did in These Is My Words : The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 Arizona Territories.)
I was also a bit disappointed that the author did not write more in the style of the time period (as was so nicely done by Sandra Dallas in the Diary of Mattie Spencer). The author was a supposed collector of vintage diaries, but her writing did not show this well. Her wording was too modern and did not reflect how Callie really would have written.
I did enjoy the book, but it is a romanticized story, not as realistic as other books I have ready. It didn't have the full grit that I was hoping to find. I've kept journals for more than 30 yrs, and this did not get personal enough. It is written like a novel, not a TRUE journal in which people keep their secrets.
But if a reader likes a western romance, then this will suffice.

Customer Reviews:
Overall good Vietnamese/ Thai cookbook........2006-05-20
I'm Vietnamese-American & grew up eating lots of Vietnamese food but never actually knew how to make anything myself so it is nice to have a cookbook that includes many of the traditional Vietnamese recipes, like carmelized ginger chicken, congee (chicken & rice soup), pho, etc. Also, the book includes Thai recipes which seem interesting though I haven't tried them yet. I've followed a couple of the former recipes and they provide good guidelines for the dish, however, I don't like how the author has "Americanized" the recipes and seems to make the highest priority presentation because I'm really just interested in eating simple, good food that's easy to make. Also, her narrative often includes "plugs" for her own or her husband's businesses which is a turn-off and detracts from the focus and authenticity of the book (which is supposed to be about cooking, not personal advertising). Still, the recipes seem ok and serve the purpose for Vietnamese-style cooking.
Excellent Cookbook for Thai and Vietnamese food.......2006-05-13
I've been using this cookbook for years and I have yet to make something that I am not pleased with from it.
Some of my favorites include "Warm Beef on Cool Noodles", a classic Vietnamese dish. The Cornish hen stew, (made with a chicken instead) was insanely good (use Japanese style yellow curry, i think they say it in the book).
The curry recipes are quite good, although I prefer to defer to Simply Thai Cooking for their technique with curry recipes (involves lots of boiling of curry and coconut milk). But these recipes are definitely great.
There is also a great recipe for Shrimp with a homemade paste made with peppercorns, cilantro, and chiles that is excellent, even when I completely riffed on it.
The format is easy to read, and the book has held up to my extremely messy cooking style. I also enjoy the author's anecdotes about Thailand and Vietnam.
Great background Info--Not so great recipes.......2005-11-30
There were a lot of things I really liked about this book. There's a detailed section on ingredients where she gives brand preferences on things like fish sauce, and substitution suggestions for hard to find ingredients. (The brand of specialty sauce you use can make a big difference in outcome in Thai/Asian food, and if you're not familiar with those foods, it's hard to know what brand to pick. And her preferences generally line up with what I've heard elsewhere.) The recipes that I've tried are fairly easy and straightforward. And I wouldn't care about authenticity if I liked the food. My problem is that while, for the most part, the results were perfectly edible, there was nothing I would want to make again. The lemongrass chicken was tasteless. And I love lemongrass chicken when I get it in Vietnamese restaurants! The lemongrass lemonade was very good, but not worth the work. The curried rice with kaffir lime leaves and the Thai Green Curry with chicken were both good, but definately missing something. This might just reflect my taste preferences--I live in New York, so I might be used to a relatively authentic restaurant version, or it might have been my technique or my lack of stellar ingredients. However, I've had much better sucess in general with Nancie McDermott's books. I will hang on to the book for the ingredient introduction, and I may try one of the recipes again if there's something I can't find elsewhere, but probably not.
Worth the money..........2005-08-11
Being a Vietnamese-American, I have found this book useful in supplementing what I had learned as a kid growing up in Viet Nam.
The notable recipes included Beef Noodle Soup (the spice mix is the trick to get the right flavor in the broth) and spring rolls and related sauces (hoisin-based and fish-sauce based). My mother, who has been cooking since her teens, has also found the recipes very useful.
My only gripe would be wanting more recipes! :)
All in all, worth the money. I am looking forward to trying the dishes at Lemongrass in Sacramento.
Not Authentic Vietnamese Cooking.......2005-04-14
There are no photographs of food, how am I suppose to know what I'm cooking and am I making it rite.
Too Americanized. I want to enjoy authentic Vietnames food not Vietrican food. I bought this book so I can get away from American food but to find myself cooking Vietnamese food American style.
