4 out of 5 stars Good start to the Flower Shop Mystery Series.......2007-05-10

4.5 of 5 stars. Book 1 of the Flower Shop Mysteries - Abby Knight discovers she's not cut out for law school, dropping out and using the rest of her inheritance to purchase her hometown flower shop, Bloomers. Unfortunately, Abby can't seem to stay out of trouble. Great cast of supporting characters, from her coworkers, sexy ex-cop Marco, her mom-the-artist, and her roommate.

5 out of 5 stars Murder And A Wedding.......2007-03-13

Abby Knight runs Bloomers, a flower shop. She's agreed to do the flowers for Jillian, her cousin who is to get married. Jillian has backed out of marriages before, but Abby is determined to see this one happen. She can't afford to have it canceled! She's also to be a bridesmaid in the wedding.

A groomsman disappears and then another member of the wedding party is found dead. Jillian enlists Abby to help solve the murder before her wedding is a fiasco.

Abby enlists the aid of Marco, the hunky bar owner. With him covering her back, Abby can't get into trouble can she?

This is such a fun series. I love Abby and her staff at the shop. Her mother and her art work add plenty of humor to the series as well. Then there's Marco. What more can be said! But even with his help, Abby seems to get into her share, and then some, of dangerous situations. Be prepared to laugh out loud when reading this book! I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Fun, Lighthearted Cozy.......2006-08-07

In the 2nd book in the Flower Shop mystery series, Abby Knight is hard at work planning a wedding...for her cousin. Jillian, Abby's flighty cousin, gets engaged once a year and calls off the nuptials before walking down the aisle. This time, Jillian is engaged to Claymore Osborne, the wimpy younger brother of Abby's ex-fiancé. Abby has been hired to create all of the flower arrangements for the wedding, and is also a bridesmaid. Determined to make sure this wedding takes place (and her flowers are paid for), Abby decides to stop at nothing to ensure her cousin walks down the aisle.

Everything comes to a screeching halt when one of the groomsman goes missing, and while frantically searching for him, Abby stumbles over the dead body of another member of the bridal party. When the missing groomsman shows up and the murder weapon is discovered as his camera, he is arrested for murder. While finding time to run her flower business, and investigating a mysterious massage parlor that recently opened in town, Abby works overtime to propel Jillian down the aisle.

This series is a fine example of why it is so wonderful to have different styles of mysteries available. I love cozy mysteries, and this was a great addition to the genre. Abby is a fun, good-hearted main character that is struggling to keep her new business afloat, and keep her family and friends happy as well. She does do some annoyingly stupid things like taking pictures of men going into the massage parlor (in broad daylight where they can see her), but she seems to believe the best out of people...mainly that no one is out to harm her. She also believes that she must help other people, even if it puts herself in danger. She is funny, charming, and loyal, and looking for love with neighboring business owner, Marco. I love the characters in this series as much as I love the mysteries, and cannot wait to visit New Chapel again with Abby very soon.

The first book in the series is called "Mum's the Word". Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars It took a bit to get going, but Abby seems to have the hang of it now..........2006-06-12

I have all four of these books. I picked up "Mum's the Word" because I was looking for a new mystery series, but I have since stopped looking because I found it. Kate Collins' flower shop mysteries are delightful. Many previous reviewers of "Mum's the Word" found it annoying, but the only thing I've found annoying is Abby's cousin Jillian. I think Collins' characters are delightful. I love that Abby's assitant Grace has a quote for everything, and her mother creates horrid anatomically correct sculptures. I love the descriptions of the flowers and the witty banter of the characters. Overall the best thing about this series is that while we have an abundance of amateur sleuth mysteries, Collins' doesn't use the same old tired, recycled plot lines I have found in many books. I agree that the first one was a little slow going, but the books get better and better as you go. I highly recommend this series.

5 out of 5 stars very charming.......2006-04-19

Light and fun with appealing characters and some genuine wit. Abby is the owner of a flower shop and is doing the floral decorations for her rich and senseless cousin, Jillian's, wedding. When one of the groomsmen turns up dead and another is missing, Jillian begs Abby to find the culprit so that her wedding can go on as planned. Because Abby will be out of a large sum of money if the wedding does not proceed (a truckload of flowers and a hideous bridesmaid dress) she aggrees. As she snoops for clues, she discovers some other unseemly activity in her small town and becomes a target for some unknown bad guys.
This is a quick, feel-good read, with good pacing and character development. Fans of Evanovich's Stephanie Plum will notice some resemblances, but all for the good.

4 out of 5 stars theosophical.......2005-06-14

(I am not a native speaker, please overlook my style)

If you just love action-packed, breathtaking sword and sorcery, this is not a book you might be willing to buy, going through the trouble of digging in second hand book stores.

The plot itself is rather thin and would barely fill the first three chapters of any other book; it is not original and therefore easy to guess in advance.
What makes this book worth reading is the author's attempt at establishing a very different kind of world animated by its own, highly original, rules.
In this world, created by a powerful but fallible (and therefore very endearing) goddess who loves her creation but is aware of its flaws, magic is the ultimate result of harmony: that between the sorcerer/ess 's will and nature. Only through real understanding can a person achieve real power.
This concept and many other throughout the book may sound very wiccan, but just take a short look at the original publishing date to realize that Ms Duane follows no literary fashion but establishes her own.

Herewiss' (the main hero) quest for his birthright blue fire magic is a phylosophical journey to awareness: though charming and beautiful, he is also self willed and sometimes even dense.
The other characters of this first volume are more functional than really well rounded, with the possible exception of Sunspark, who is deeply entertaining.

Ms Duane's writing is never easy and not always proficient: some theoretical pages tend to be a bit convolute and dull, but generally speaking she manages to express her idea(l)s in clear, challenging paragraphs. Some are even lyrical, deeply moving: one really feels the depth of her motives even if one does not share them.

A word of caution for touchy people: there is a lot of sex in this book, never graphic, but it is not only essential in the author's Weltanschauung but for the plot too.
Every single character (even the goddess) has a very no nonsense attitude regarding any kind of mating: Herewiss is deeply in love with another man, a childhood friend, but both of them "share" with other people following their instincts.
In Ms Duane's world this is perfectly allright because the goddess encourages any kind of love and once in a while she descends among her creatures to share her love with them.

An interesting book, worth reading because of its depth. Therefore the four stars.

2 out of 5 stars not very unique.......2003-11-01

i was a fan of duane's first few wizard books, so i picked this up. i guess i'm in a minority here, but i wasn't very impressed w/ this book. granted, it was one of duane's earliest efforts, but the plot is predictable and book lays on the mythology really thick. also, duane's dialogue feels out of place with its constant, very american-sounding vernacular. there are just a few interesting twists. the most interesting is the way she explores sex and sexuality, and the ideas of open relationships, bisexuality, and sex in relation to religion. it's also nice to see a (mostly) homosexual character in the main role, but the last herald mage series by mercedes lackey is much more poignant. be aware that this edition (1984) is a revised edition and slightly diff. from the original 1979 edition.

5 out of 5 stars In Quest of a Focus.......2003-08-22

The Door Into Fire (1979) is the first novel in the Tale of Five series. Herewiss is the heir to the Brightwood, a principality within the Kingdom of Darthen. Herewiss has the potential to be the first male in centuries to use the Power of the Flame; the fire is within him, but cannot be expressed in any meaningful way without a Focus.

While training with the Rodmistresses, he has tried various forms of Rods as his Focus, but they all burst. Then he tried swords of wood, ivory and bone, but they all burst. Finally, he tries to imbue steel swords with a form of pseudolife, but even they all burst.

In this novel, Herewiss is working on yet another steel sword in the smithy that he has constructed in his bedroom when he receives a message via pigeon that Freelorn, his loved, and his small band have been trapped by a thousand or more armed men in an old keep south of Madeil. Freelorn wants him to come and use his sorcery to save them once again. After getting permission from Hearn, his father and Lord of Brightwater, Herewiss leaves to rescue Freelorn. He rides out on Dapple, who has been blessed with the talent of being at the right place at the right time, but finds another mount at a wayside shelter during a torrential thunderstorm.

Sunspark is a fire elemental in the form of a red horse with a golden mane. Since it is newly come to the planet, Sunspark spends too much time absorbing the energy from a brush fire and the rainstorm catches it away from shelter. The water is gradually eating away its energy, but it hears Herewiss calling and almost reaches the shelter before it is unable to move anymore. However, Herewiss and Dapple carry and drag it out of the rain, where it soon recovers.

This novel is a tale of adventure and character development. Both Herewiss and Freelorn mature during this novel. Segnbora, another one frustrated by an almost inexpressible Flame, exhibits some changes that might blossom later in this series. However, the major changes occur in Sunspark, the energy being who knows nothing about humanity but is very curious.

This novel expresses a philosophy of Life that underlies every aspect of the story: the only way to cheat death is to maximize Life and Love in all its forms. When he has his epiphany, Herewiss finds that he is just a small part of the Life that permeates the Universe. This worldview also underlies the Young Wizards series.

This novel incorporates a variant of the Triple Goddess religion as the major spiritual influence; in fact, the Mother and the Maiden play a significant part in the story. This religion promotes various forms of sexual experiences, of which heterosexual sex is special only in that it produces offspring. The Goddess herself has Twin Lovers, her own children by parthenogenesis, who are originally both male, but who die and return, sometimes as male and sometimes as female.

Other aspects of the story show a definite Irish influence, but one that antecedes the Celtic infusion. The Fyrd, the aboriginal fauna in the Middle Kingdoms, include horwolves, nadders, and keplians. However, there were no Sidhe nor any other sentients occupying the land prior to the coming of the humans.

This series is being republished after being long out of print. The Door Into Fire and The Door Into Shadow were issued as an omnibus edition in 2002 (see The Sword and the Dragon) and the other two (including the hereto unpublished The Door Into Starlight) are scheduled to be released in 2004 (or later).

Highly recommended for Duane fans and anyone else who enjoys tales of sword and sorcery with some serious character development.

4 out of 5 stars Beauty, love, adventure, pain - all here.......2002-02-13

Loved this series, seems like forever. My view of a deity I could speak to and not flinch from , came of this world... go read it and you'll see why.
Everyone else told you about the characters and world. I think I memorized huge parts of this book before I even knew I was doing it. That's how special it is.
IF you want another bit of this world, she wrote a story honoring Andre Norton [Moonsinger's World?] with a Rodmistress who always makes me cry. And that's not all bad, either. Won't even let my mother keep this book long, and part of why is Diane's story!
You'd also love her beings in "So you want to be a wizard" series. That's going on book 5 now. Haven't read that yet, but I will, and I know I'll love it.
To all my fellow readers who've been there in your hearts - may the Goddess hold you in Her hand...

5 out of 5 stars The Best Fantasy Novel I've Ever Read.......2001-06-14

This novel is one that I've read and reread in both the editions I have -- the original paperback and the Bluejay books edition. It is a story of enduring love, the triumph of love over fear and hate, and most of all, the best truly different fantasy world I've ever seen made up. It is culturally, historically, and religiously different without being dry, like some science-fiction books that try to portray another really different culture get.

It's main character is Herewiss, a man who has the potential to wield great magic but cannot break through to connect with it and manifest his magic. He joins forces with Freelorn, the exiled heir of a neighboring kingdom and his lifelong love, Segnbora, a mysterious troubled woman, and some of Freelorn's faithful friends (Harald, Moris, and Dritt) in an adventure that leads them to the edges of their world, and involves door into other worlds and the mastering of a fire elemental whose favored form is that of a horse!

The next two books in the series are The Door into Shadow and The Door into Sunset. At last, I hear news that Ms. Duane has written the fourth (The Door into Twilight) that I have hounded the bookstores about now for years, diligently searching in the "Du" section of fantasy and science fiction with every trip.

For those who really love the world of the Middle Kingdoms, there's a little-known short story by Diane Duane published in Flashing Swords! #5: Demons and Daggers (edited by Lin Carter, Nelson Doubleday 1981) called "Parting Gifts." It is about an older rodmistress, the Shadow, an young swashbuckler, and a kitten. It features a wild hunt and facing down the Shadow in his lair. I cry whenever I finish it. If you can find it, read it and add it to your knowledge of the world setting.

I've used Ms. Duane's Middle Kingdoms setting as the basis for my personal D&D campaign for years now. Sure, my campaign is by no means her books, but she provided such a rich tapestry (and map!) that I didn't have to go far to have a solid foundation for a whole world.

          5 out of 5 stars A winner.......2007-08-18

I can't imagine many other writers who would have thought to combine Star Trek with good musical comedy, but fortunately John M. Ford was able to do it. I bought this book when it first came out, and it remains among my few all-time favorite Trek novels.

It's nice to see the crew lighten up a bit. The humorous bits that appear at every turn, starting with the blue orange juice all starships apparently have ("I can't turn it into a death ray without a few extra parts"), going on through the quick educational film on Our Friend Dilithium, the search that takes our heroes through all sorts of adventures, even the golf course (dogleg left, minefield right) were all memorable enough to get this one off my bookshelf again and again.

The only difficulty is not knowing the music being used when various characters are singing, apart from the Rawhide theme. I only hope someone out there manages to put together an mp3 collection of the appropriate Gilbert & Sullivan (and whoever else) music to play along with the book. I guess it just goes to show the value of a knowledge of the classics.

Thoroughly enjoyable, thoroughly readable and entertaining. I'm just glad it managed to sneak under the Paramount novel rules radar.

Finally, I just want to say that in my book, anyone who objects to all this really needs to lighten up and try to enjoy it.

          5 out of 5 stars A Hilarious - if Absurd - Star Trek Novel.......2007-07-12

If you take Star Trek with utter seriousness, and have no room for humor, then this book is definitely not for you. If you're familiar with the characters, are willing to let them have a bit of "out of continuity" fun, and get a kick out of people trying to react sensibly to absurd situations, then this is definitely worth your time. It's like a screwball comedy, starring the Star Trek characters.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite ST Novels.......2007-01-03

I know there are a lot of people who hate this book, but I've never quite figured out why.

It certainly helps to know about Busby Berkeley musicals, old film and to recognize movie studio logos (the "higher power" thing). It's absolutely necessary to have a sense of humor and to not hold Trek and the characters in such reverence that you can't laugh at them. If that describes you, you're in luck (and you may never look at a milkshake again the same way). If not, put the book down now, step back and run the other way like crazy.

Does anyone know if there is a list of source material for the songs Ford uses in the book? I recognize a lot of them, but some are either original or extremely obscure.

3 out of 5 stars Slapstick Star Trek.......2005-05-16

Star Trek novels are not intended to be great literature. They are quick reads and enjoyable diversions. "How Much for Just the Planet" captures the fun and campiness of the original Star Trek television series, with a fair amount of Gilbert and Sullivan absurdity mixed in. Unfortunately there is no seriousness or supsense to provide respite from the general goofiness.

Author John M. Ford is creative, but I had great difficulty keeping his characters straight. The familiar Star Trek characters are of course easy to follow, but the rest of the cast is another matter entirely. The characters are one-dimensional and not clearly defined, the plot lines don't intercut swiftly enough, and the Klingons each have formal names and nicknames which are used interchangeably.

"How Much for Just the Planet" is not the worst of the Star Trek novels, but it's not one of the best either.

5 out of 5 stars A "Trek" Novel to separate the Trekkies from the rest of us........2004-07-21

If you've read the other reviews on the subject, you already know that "How much for just the Planet" is a book which bitterly divides people who read it into two camps. You either love it, or hate it, and there just isn't any in-between. Those who love it are able to appreciate a beautifully crafted piece of farce, creative plot twists, believable and funny minor characters, and tons of side references to make a cinema-lover grin - or groan - all the way through the book.

Those who hate the book will make any number of claims why - it's not funny, it's blatant character rape, he shouldn't have done it without the "Permission of the Great Bird of the Galaxy." What it boils down to is, they probably don't appreciate the humor, think that the ability to whip up a filk version of "Pop Goes the Weasle" makes them qualified to judge musical parody, and are upset because this book violates every one of their sacred cows and sets them out to dry. And it does so in an unapologetic, yet completely harmless manner.

One of this book's critics made the point that the book fails because it fails to tell a serious story. Not so. It's just easy to miss, if you're being too literal-minded. When you get right down to it, the basic plot of this novel is as formulaic as they come. Kirk et al land on a planet hoping to obtain its valuable mineral resources for the Federation. The Klingons do the same. They curse and swagger for a while. The residents of the planet, meanwhile, desiring to be part of neither the Federation nor the Empire, have their own way of discouraging the two sides from fighting...and so it goes.

The "point" of this novel that so many people seem to be missing is that the crew of the Enterprise and the Klingons are more alike than they are different. They have personal interests which don't often get brought up in old series episodes, where it is strictly "us" versus "them" where human-klingon relations are concerned. And if you take a randomly-chosen crew of humans and a randomly-chosen crew of klingons, it is entirely likely that there is going to be some overlap. They might even GET ALONG. Admittedly, there are going to be prejudices and cultural differences to overcome. The fact that Ford did not bludgeon us over the head with this message doesn't make it any the less valid. And the fact that he chose to present it in a humorous way which played a bit fast and loose with some of our assumptions doesn't either.

Guys, You're entitled to your opinions. But before you crawl back into your shell of fandom, pick up a copy of "Bimbos of the Death Sun" by Sharyn McCrumb and read it. And THINK about it.

As for the rest of us, who haven't elevated Gene Roddenbury to deity status yet, who saw "Free Enterprise" and laughed at it, and who Like or LOVE Star Trek without seeing it as a way of life (yup...I'm FIJAGH all the way, folks...) this novel is a delightful change of pace from the formulaic drivel that makes up the vast majority of published Trek literature.

5 out of 5 stars love this cookbook!.......2007-05-17

I do wish this book had pictures, however, the recipes are good enough to sell the book on their own without them.

This is my second cookbook by this author and its the favorite of the 2. At least 90% of the recipes I can't wait to try, the other 10% I won't only becuase I don't like mushrooms=)

The recipes in here were well thought out and well put together. There is something in this book for everyone.

I think that this book has some great ideas. I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes, nice variety.......2006-10-23

I have been working my way through several breakfast books and this has been one I have been turning to regularly.

Recipes I have tried and liked: Berry Slush, Orange Slush - both were easy and YUMMY! Smoked Salmon Omelettes, Farmer's Breakfast Casserole, Eggs Gratin, Sweet Spiced French Toast, Autumn Pancakes, Jiffy Buttermilk Pancakes, Oatmeal Buttermilk Waffles, Buttermilk Waffles,

Recipe tried, but needs tweaking: Apple Pie Pancakes. Tasted ok, but didn't look good - need to tweak this one.

Recipes I have bookmarked to try in the future: Orange Juice-Banana Smoothie, Lucy's Lemonade, Swiss Scramble, Scrambled Eggs with Sliced Tomato, Mozzarella, Fresh Basil, and Hazelnuts (though I foresee omitting the hazelnuts); Favorite Omelette; Zucchini, Tomato and Fresh Herb Omelette (can you tell I have an herb garden?); Puffy Cheese Omelet with Spinach and Fresh herb filling, topped with Tomato Salsa; Cowboy Frittata; Mushroom, Bell Pepper and Ham Frittata; Classic Quiche Lorraine; Spinach-Sausage Quiche; Egg-Sausage Strata; Crab Strata Supreme; Holiday Strata; Ham and Cheese Breakfast Strata; Apple Strata; Baked Eggs Florentine; Baked Cheese Blintz Casserole; French Toast with Orange Cream Filling; Spiced Overnight French Toast; French Toast Bake with Strawberry Cream Cheese Spread; Sticky Bun French Toast; Spiced Whole Wheat Pancakes with Nuts; Pumpkin Pancakes; Chicken Divan Crepes; Turkey and Mushrooms in Herb Crepes; Blueberry-Peach Dessert Crepes; Crab & Shrimp Crepes; Hawaiian Waffles; Gingerbread Waffles; Country Potatoes; Cheesy Potatoes; Oatmeal Brulee; Brown Rice Breakfast Bowl; Pumpkin-Apple Spice Muffins with Streusel Topping; Old Fashioned Buttermilk Biscuits with Honey Butter; Rich Scones with Lemon Curd; Cranberry Scones; Chocolate Chip Orange Scones; Scones with Spiced Sugar Nut Topping; Orange Nut Bread with Dried Cranberries; Chocolate Zucchini Bread; Overnight Spice Nut Coffee Cake; Summer Fruit Custard Coffee Cake; Famous Cinnamon Rolls; Glazed Lemon Cake; Cranberry Sorbet

As you can see, I have many breakfasts ahead of me full of experimenting with new recipes!!!

I will say if you have bacon or ham; bell pepper, mushrooms, eggs, cheese and potatoes, you can probably make 1/2 the recipes in this book. :)

                          4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect!.......2006-02-10

To me this book is better than ok but much less than exceptional to deserve 5 stars. Ther are a fairly substantial number of recipes for all your key breakfast dishes such as eggs, omelletes, waffles, pancakes, stratas, quiches and more. The recipes overall are good, mostly simple and straightforward and some recipes are quite creative and original.

Whats missing here is photography. Not a single photo in the entire book. I personally like to see at least a few of the finished dishes to get a feel for the authors perspective. Take for example the Green Eggs and Ham. This is one that I would like to have seen in a colored photo and it would hav complimented the book.

Other than that observation, if you like breakfast and want to add some extra flair to your Sunday mornings, it's a good source for some new ideas.
