Jack Reacher is back, dragged into what looks like a series of grisly serial murders by a team of FBI profilers who aren't totally sure he's not the killer they're looking for, but believe that even if he isn't, he's smart enough to help them find the real killer. And what they've got on the ex-MP, who's starred in three previous Lee Child thrillers (Tripwire, Die Trying, Killing Floor), is enough to ensure his grudging cooperation: phony charges stemming from Reacher's inadvertent involvement in a protection shakedown and the threat of harm to the woman he loves.
The killer's victims have only one thing in common--all of them brought sexual harassment charges against their military superiors and all resigned from the army after winning their cases. The manner, if not the cause, of their deaths is gruesomely the same: they died in their own bathtubs, covered in gallons of camouflage paint, but they didn't drown and they weren't shot, strangled, poisoned, or attacked. Even the FBI forensic specialists can't figure out why they seem to have gone willingly to their mysterious deaths. Reacher isn't sure whether the killings are an elaborate cover-up for corruption involving stolen military hardware or the work of a maniac who's smart enough to leave absolutely no clues behind. This compelling, iconic antihero dead-ends in a lot of alleys before he finally figures it out, but every one is worth exploring and the suspense doesn't let up for a second. The ending will come as a complete surprise to even the most careful reader, and as Reacher strides off into the sunset, you'll wonder what's in store for him in his next adventure. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Across the country women are being murdered by an extraordinarily clever killer who leaves no trace of evidence, no fatal wounds, no signs of struggle, and no clues to an apparent motive. All the victims have in common is one thing: they each knew Jack Reacher.
It's "spectacular" (Seattle Times) and "swift and brutal" (New York Times).
Plan to stay up long past bedtime and do some serious hyperventilating toward the end. (Kirkus Reviews)
Reacher belongs at the same table with Parker's Spenser. (Booklist)

Good but could have been great.......2007-07-18
Ok, long time fan of Lee Child Reacher series. I only have 3 left to read (listen to). This one just too much FBI blackmailing threats without good ol' Jack finding a way, his way, to remedy the situation. Either Lee should have not had the FBI chief be SUCH a a-hole and somehow come around to give Jack props OR Lee should have had Jack emit revenge on this this guy in a way smackdown way or had him get fired/arrested. Jack rolled over way to easy on this guy and had a weak way of threating the FBI jag at the end. Otherwise, the plot was great. Keep up the normal great work, Pursuader rocked and I'm on Enemy another great writing.
Republished under different title?.......2007-07-02
I am a Jack Reacher fan and am currently finishing the tenth novel by Lee Child (The Hard Way). I was astonished to discover a Jack Reacher novel I had never heard of. But then, when I read the description of the plot, I am fairly certain that this book was re-published under the title "Running Blind" which is the fourth Reacher novel.
Painful.......2007-06-18
I have read several of the Lee Child's "Jack Reacher" novels and enjoyed them. Up until now. Child creates great characters (Reacher being preeminent) and has a talent for great individual scenes. His endings tend to be a bit clumsy, but I've forgiven that in the past for the joy of the ride. I can't do it with this one. The solution on this one, re. how the murders are committed, is so absurd that it has effectively ended my interest in the series. I figured out the probable solution early on during the book, but I kept telling myself I must be wrong as such a solution would be ridiculous. Unfortunately the ridiculous solution was the solution. I apologize for mentioning the ending without going into detail as to what it was and what specifically was wrong with it, but there's no way to do this without being a "spoiler" and I don't want to mess up the (already bad) ending for people who do choose to buy the book. If you like Lee Child, please continue to read him but know that he has done better work than this.
Reacher's Creatures.......2007-06-03
Well he may be as lazy as his friend Douglas Preston says he is but he has put out a book every year and that's got to be tough. I can't think of a bad thing to say about any of his books. I am wild about them. He has inadvertently started a cult following with readers calling themselves "Reacher's Creatures" of which I am one. I love Jack Reacher. I will admit the first one I read I kept looking back at the photo of Lee Child thinking "this man wrote this big tough guy?" He looks so mild mannered and Jack Reacher is anything but mild mannered. He was a military MP and he was one of the best. Problem is Jack can't stop. He's wonderful and he is a true hero which we don't have many of any more. These are so well written that when you realize you are coming to the end I begin to slow down so it won't end so soon. He's rough, he's tough just as he has to be. But he can't settle down. Everybody that reads these wants to at least know him. He is a real character. We want him to be our friend. Lee Child made him come alive for us. I'm anxious for more and Lee Child says we can expect at least 10 more. These are my very favorite books right now.
Not as effective as his other books.......2007-06-03
Lee Child has created an unusual hero in Jack Reacher which has provided the basis for quite a number of books now. I dimly think that the author Lee Child is British but regardless of whether he is or not his creation Reacher is designed to appeal to all of the trigger points of an American audience.
Reacher is a person who can handle himelf in a scrape. He has done time in the militiary and has been trained in the art of combat. His combat traiing involved learning about firearms. He also spends him time in manual work so that he is fit. Yet he is not only an action hero.
He has worked in the militiary police so that he has developed Sherlock Holmes skills in investigation. (Sherlock Holmes like skills because the Reacher books are not procedurals. No slow accumulation of facts and evidence. Reacher solves crimes by way of intuitive break throughs, just like old Sherlock)
Most of the books have some referance point back to the army and Child the writer is cloying in his attempts to paint the United States Army in a posative light as an organisation which is on top of its game. One can imagine the pick up truck Republican crowd who are presumably the main audience for the books beaming with pride when there is some discourse in the books about the good old US army. Very limited discussion of the downside.
Never the less the previous books have been effective enough as time fillers and a good read when one is going on a plane flight. This one however seems a little formulaic. Perhaps it is simply that I have read a few and the nuts and bolts of the construction has become clearer and makes it more difficult to suspend disbelief.
The main problem however with this book is the end. Whilst it is perhaps a bit silly to say that it does not ring true.(It is a work of escapist fiction) It is perhaps harder to take seriously than some other of the books which appear to be better constructed. Still this is all subjective no doubt.

On The Run by Michael Coleman.......2007-01-23
"On The Run." By Michael Coleman
This book is about a boy named Luke. He steals things often. He is like the lock picking champ. He can unlock any lock that you give him.
One day Luke saw some shoes in a car so he unpicked the car lock and got the shoes. When he turned around two boys named Lee Young and Mig Russell were standing there. They stole the car that Luke had just unlocked. The owner came running out of the store and was chasing the car. Then he saw the Luke had stolen the shoes. But there was a girl about Luke's age that was standing right were the car was heading. So Luke ran as fast as he could and pushed her out of the way of the car. The owner then cought Luke and toke him to court. Luke had to help blind people for his service. And that is when he found out that the girl standing there that he pushed out of the way was blind and the daughter of the man owning the car. Luke had to help her and run with her so that she could enter a race. Because her old guide runner (her dad) broke his foot chasing Luke. The girls name is Jodie. So her and Luke worked together so much that they became friends and trusted each other. But a couple of days before the race Luke ran into Mig and Lee. They wanted him to pick locks the day of the race so that they could stele stuff. But Luke didn't want to because he was trying to do better. But then they said they would hurt Jodie. And Luke didn't want her to get hurt so he said he would do it. Luke tried to figure out how he was going to do the race and the thing for Mig and Lee. But he was scared of not making it to the race and Jodie wanted to win really bad. Read this book to find out if Luke makes it to the race and wins.
I thought this book was really good and I recommend it to people because it is good and exiting. It keeps you reading and into the book!!

Fast paced and amazing........2005-01-14
Originally titled Going Straight, this UK release about 15-year-old thief Luke Reid focuses who inherited his career choice from his father. Luke hates his father for missing his last 10 birthdays but hasn't quite made the logical leap that if he continues on this path he too will end up at Markham prison like his father. A possibility for reform and redemption comes in the form of blind marathon runner Jodie who is the victim of a crime Luke could have prevented. Coleman succeeds in creating a fast paced work that maintains suspense and doubt about the main characters' futures. In a few places the English lingo makes the text a bit obtuse, as most readers will not realize that `to grass' is thief slang for narcing or ratting someone out. Another area needing work is a slow chapter that is bogged down by entirely too much information about Louis Braille that would have been better suited to an epilogue. Luke is fascinating internally conflicted young man who has many gifts including the potential to change and the realization that he is in control of his own rehabilitation. The culmination of Luke's choices is a brilliant heart-pounding finale at the London Marathon involving tv cameras, police and an ambulance. All in all a compelling and wild ride about a boy with whom many young readers can emphasize and model their own desires for self-improvement.
A Nice Pair of Running Shoes -- a review by Alec, age 10.......2004-11-06
Luke Reid is a fifteen-year-old thief whose dad is in jail for thievery. All Luke did was try to steal a pair of nice running shoes, but he got caught and now has to help the blind. Unfortunately, the owner of the shoes is a blind girl named Jodi, and Luke has to work for two months with her. Then, if he does well, he gets to work another two months with the blind. If he does badly, he gets sent to jail for two months. Jodi wants to run the London Marathon for kids, which is two and a half miles, with Luke leading her. Will Luke help Jodi win the marathon, or will he have to go to jail?
Michael Coleman is a great author who pulls you in with the present part of the story, causing you to forget what happened in the past parts of the story until it's too late. The speed of the information is a bit slow, and so is the storyline, but in the best moments (such as when they are playing Goalball), this book is amazingly good!

Blind Man's Buff.......2005-05-18
Running Blind lives upto the title. The author sends the hero on a mission where the hero is literally 'running blind'. He is the victim of a double agent within his own service, and is called back from retirement for a last job against an earlier nemesis in the rival KGB service.
The background is the Cold War, and the antagonistic feelings of those times may be a bit anachronistic. But given this limitation as a period piece, the book succeeds in leading both its hero and the reader into a Blind Man's Buff.
The end is still a surprise, and sort of a shock.
A thriller from start to finish, and guaranteed reading from in one sitting from start to finish.
Also very good repeat value.
The language is very mature and builds up each event to a pitch required for the novel to sustain a certain momentum.
Bagley's Pinnacle.......2003-10-01
I picked the right age to read this for the first time -- I had progressed beyond Hardy Boys and so forth, and knew just a little about birds and bees. It remained my favorite book for a good 3 years.
This book will make you want to visit Iceland and retrace the protagonist's adventures.
As with most Desmond Bagley books, the language is not taxing, and the style is welcoming. It has more pace and intensity than his usual work, and all in all, a delightful book to read. Unfortunately, the ending is quite weak -- the good guy loses consciousness at some point and when he wakes up some serendipitous sequence of events have improved his changes. Other that complaint, I loved this book.
A terrific roller coaster of a story!.......2003-06-12
Back in the 1960s and even 1970s, Desmond Bagley was easily one of the best thriller writers around. As a rule, his books tend to be short and to the point, filled with action and marked with innovative ideas. Running Blind is one of my personal favorites (actually I think it is his best work) which I suddenly stumbled upon after many years. Allan Stewart, a retired intelligence agent is suddenly forced against his will to re-join the game just to complete one final assignment. Almost immediately, he finds himself in a maze of bluffs and double-bluffs. By a mix of good fortune and rusty skills, he escapes a trap and in doing so, stumbles almost by accident on the scary possibility that a top official in British intelligence may actually be a Russian mole (remember, this is a Cold War story). Of course, he now has to settle this question one way or the other. What follows is a terrific roller coaster of a story as Stewart (accompanied by his girlfriend), the mole, the Russians (including his opposite number thirsting for revenge after Stewart had long ago shot him in a very sensitive area!), and stray CIA agents engage in a fascinating pursuit over the Icelandic landscape, culminating in a shootout at the baddies hideout that is almost "western" in nature. A very good novel indeed.
Great Book.......2002-03-28
I read this book many years ago I remember it being great. A very fast paced action thriller. For those of you who may be interested the BBC did make a TV series based on this book. But it was a long time ago, (maybe early eighties or even late seventies I'm not sure). May be available at BBC.co.uk?
Great Read at 14.......2000-02-02
When I was a kid (many years ago now), I read this book. I still see Desmond Bagley as the natural successor to Alistair Maclean. If Maclean had zero percent sex in his books (where there is a female character as in 'The Golden Rendezvous', she hates the hero), Desmond Bagley gets to maybe 2 percent - he does have some alluring female characters. But it is all sooo British. This book is an excellent read, with the hero and the reader uncertain as to what is going on as the plot slowly unfolds.
Book Description
For many years, people have made the assertion that I should write a book containing a perspective of my life as a blind person. In retrospect, I realize that I was hesitant because, although I knew that a book on this subject would be informative; I questioned its value as entertainment. I soon found that my reservations were unwarranted. As I began to write, I sent installments of the book to people across the country, old friends as well as new acquaintances. I was pleasantly surprised by the preliminary reviews. For example, Maxine West, of St. Louis, Missouri, was cooking dinner for her son when she began reading the book. She ordered pizza. I couldn't understand this, so I re-examined the book. I know from experience that people are fascinated with blindness. It scares the hell out of them. They are amazed by my close calls with death or serious injury. They make comments such as, "I can't believe you're still alive." And they thought the book was funny. A lady told me of reading the book while at work, and was concerned that her co-workers would hear the laughter. It has never been my intention to be provocative, but I know that, in today's world, this book would be considered politically incorrect. Please don't tell the moral police, but I tell it like it is in my own words. I hope this book is informative, humorous, and emotionally stimulating, but most importantly, it is my sincere hope that, after reading this book, you will be left with a greater understanding of the life of this blind man. Suitors duel.......2004-03-12
This was and still is, a really good book. The supposedly immposiable task because more intresting when the suited goes with her suitors on their crazy quest to win her hand. If you read the first chapter you would probaly guess who I'm rooting for but I won't give anything away. This book has a prequeal called "Prawns Revail" and a sequel called "Immortal Duel" Right now I am trying to get my book club to read the first one. I would recomend this book in a heartbeat (even if it didn't get on my guide, yet) to anyone with a good reading level and an apperication of fantasy writing.
Syssal Kipican.......1999-05-29
I love this book. My favorite character is Syssal Kipican. But it disappointed me when I heard that the First Quest series was no longer being printed. They're all very imaginative and fun to read. My dream was actually to be able to write a First Quest book myself, but I guess that's out of the question. *Note: DUH. It's a TRIad, so why would it have a fourth book?
Great.......1997-10-24
Like the other book this one iss absolultly great! By the way if anyone knows if there is a book four then please let me know

Book Description
Somewhere between banging the table with a spoon and refusing to eat Brussels sprouts, children are captivated by the magic that takes place in the kitchen. Transforming a lump of dough into a chocolate chip cookie, watching a pancake puff up on the griddle, rolling meatballs between their hands are all enchanting to children. Look and Cook features 50 simple recipes for kids of all ages that capture the fun of cooking. The kid-tested recipes are clearly explained and colorfully illustrated with vintage cookbook artwork.
Author and designer Tina Davis has been collecting cookbooks for more than two decades. Some of the recipes she includes here, such as Popcorn Balls, are reproduced from her favorite books. Others such as Fruit Salad and Meringue Cookies come from her family's collection and have been passed down for generations. From Salmon Loaf to Blueberry Muffins, all of the dishes are classic favorites easy enough for a child to make with a little supervision from an adult.
To acquaint kids with the kitchen, Davis describes different utensils and their uses, then explains some rudimentary techniques, like how to measure ingredients and clean up afterward. Junior cooks can personalize the book by adding their own recipes to the blank Notes section.
Customer Reviews:
Again a beautiful book from Tina Davis.......2007-03-23
Just like 'See and Sew' this is again a beautiful book by Tina Davis. I love it. My daughter loves it. The recipes are good, tradicional and well explained and we just can't get enough of it.
Great cookbook for children.......2007-02-07
The recipes in this book are very simple, to me anyway, but for my 11 year old grandaughter they are perfect. We both love this cookbook and have spent several sessions together trying different recipes. She has discovered it is not that hard to cook and have it taste so good as she thought and is getting more adventurous with each get together. I would call it a companion cookbook. It also looks very cute sitting on the shelf as a decorative item...I may have to order another one.
A Good Beginner Cookbook for a Child.......2006-11-22
I was looking for a cookbook to give my 8 year old daughter that could also become a cherished possession as she got older. This book fits the bill! It has the feel of an adult cookbook with real recipes - not cutesy kid ones. Many of the recipes are classics, and kid favorites - and a few that will certainly be new to our family! And the retro illustrations just add to the classical feel. This book also has space for her to add her own favorite recipes as she learns, so that she can truly make this book her own. I intend to buy one for my five-year old, as well, when she gets a little older. Just as I remember "The Cookie Cookbook" from Betty Crocker from my growing years, I hope for this to become a treasure for my daughter.
A very nice cookbook for children...and even adults!.......2006-01-28
I bought this book mainly because I liked the "retro-ness" of it. It has WONDERFUL retro illustrations on every page, and so is a very attractive cookbook for children. Of course, the look isn't the main issue in a cookbook, and I will say the other features are near excellent too. The spiral binding is a real plus. A cookbook needs to lie flat! The pages are very sturdy. It has handy sections; the first one being several pages illustrating various kitchen tools and equipment. If a child says, "What is a sieve?" they can find it pictured in this section. This section can also be a helpful checklist for a child who wants to start collecting their own kitchen items. There also is a section illustrating the proper way to set a table, a section in the back consisting of several pages to record your own favorite recipes, a section on kitchen safety tips, a section on how to measure, and a page illustrating how to test the freshness of the eggs in your fridge by putting them in a glass of water and seeing if they float or not (the higher an egg floats in a glass of water, the older it is).
As for the recipes: They are of the very basic foods, chosen for children: soups; main dishes; veggies; breads, buscuits, and muffins; cakes, cookies, and pies; more desserts; snacks; and beverages. I, as an adult cooking for many years, have my own favorite recipes for most of the recipes in this book, like the blueberry muffins, chicken noodle soup, pumpkin pie, baked mac and cheese, etc. I did make the stove top mac and cheese recipe here in the book and it was easy and good. Everyone has the Nestle Tollhouse cookie recipe whenever they buy the chocolate chips, but it is in here in the book. I found their method for making cinnamon toast a bit strange, by using the broiler! It is much easier for a child to put bread in the toaster, spread the hot toast it with butter, and then sprinkle the cinnamon/sugar on. The strangest recipe is called "Pig in a Poke"...you bake a hot dog in a whole potato! I want to try that one! My daughter will be preparing the tuna casserole for dinner tonight.
Overall, I highly recommend this book because of all the good information it gives children about working in the kitchen and for its beautiful and pleasing design. It would make a wonderful birthday gift to any child who has an interest in cooking.
Adorable cookbook!.......2005-08-04
I bought this for my 4 year old daughter after she spotted it in a store. It is beautifully illustrated and has a retro feel which I love. Recipes are simple, perfect for children (or adults) of any age. We made blueberry muffins and can not make to make many more! This would make a great gift. I purchased a second copy to give along with a child's apron.
