Book Description
In River Girls, Cecilia "Pudge" Kleinkauf uses the real-life experiences of four young women- Alyssa, Samantha, Alex, and Blair- to create an informative and engaging introduction to the sport of flyfishing for pre-teen and teenage girls.
Using a "girls can do this, too" approach, the book conveys the idea that flyfishing is more fun and challenging than other kinds of fishing and that it is definitely not just a sport for boys.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely must read!.......2007-03-19
So maybe I'm a little biased because I'm one of the girls in the book, but there is nobody better than Cecilia Kleinkauf to help teach girls how to fish. I had the priviledge of fishing with her in Alaska, and she really knows her stuff. I also read the book cover to cover and it is so informative and made me want to go out and fish right then! If you have a young girl and are trying to get her into fishing or she already is and wants to learn more, this is the book you need!
Fantastic Book for All Ages!!!.......2007-01-29
This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to know more about how to get started or get better at fly fishing!!! If you find yourself saying "I want to learn how to fly fish - now what do I do" - this book was written just for you!!! You will learn what equipment and clothing is needed to get you on the water in pursuit of fish. This book is also full of illustrations and close-up photographs on everything from the fly rods, reels, leader, tippet, how to tie most used knots and what type of cast are best to use and when. It also has a wealth of info on how to fish in fresh and salt water and the best techniques for catching, playing and landing fish. There is even a shopping guide checklist in the back of this book along with a wonderful glossary of fly fishing terms which I found to be extremely helpful. If you or someone you know is interested in learning about fly fishing and what to do to get started, I highly, highly recommend this fantastic book!!!
A must read for ALL young women.......2007-01-16
At last someone has focused on encouraging girls to take up fishing, especially fly fishing! With four real life girls to lead the way, young women can see for themselves that fishing isn't just for boys any more! Want the girl in your life to start fly fishing? BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!
River Girls: Fly Fishing for Young Women.......2007-01-11
I picked this book up as a Christmas gift for some nieces based on the author's first book being such a hit with my mother.
And I'm happy to say the book was well received by all of them. Now I get the impression my mother and nieces are planning a trip to Alaska this summer.
If you have any women in your life that enjoy the outdoors these books from this author are a must.

Look and Tremble; A Novel of West Florida
ASIN: 0942407776 |
Product Description
Evoking images of West Florida's Chipola River Country and other regions from Pensacola to Tallahassee, Jesse Earle Bowden's Song of Many Septembers in this expanded Florida Classic Edition continues the nostalgic anthem that began with his popular 1979 memoir, Always the Rivers Flow - now too in a Florida Classic Edition. He expanded the theme with his best-selling West Florida novel, Look and Tremble, and his later Southern story collection, Embrace an Autumnal Heart. Lyrically portraying a Southern boyhood of the 1930's and 1940's, Bowden accents this edition with four fictional stories, Ruby's Café, Six Bushels of Corn, Atchafalaya and The Worm Grunters. Memorable Pensacola News Journal columns and features trace the changing seasons, holidays, family gatherings, politics, vote-buying, country boy sports and humorous small-town stories. He profiles Southern novelists William Faulkner and Thomas Clayton Wolfe, legendary Florida Governor Fuller Warren and Southern humorist/philosopher Brother Dave Gardner; brings alive Civil War battles Shiloh and Gettysburg, Old South Charleston and Savannah, and wilderness Wakulla Springs, Dead Lakes and Okefenokee Swamp; salutes Don Sutton and his major league Hall of Fame destiny, and rides the Gulf Wind into railroading history. With many other sentimental journeys and many evocative drawings, Bowden again awakens the soul and spirit of the past colliding with the future in his native West Florida.
Customer Reviews:
Jesse Earle Bowden Master of the short story.......2005-10-21
Jesse Earle Bowden is a southern writer in the style of Mississippian, William Faulkner, but without the need of holding a dictionary in one hand as you read. His imaginary town of Ring Jaw is typical the towns of southern Alabama and northwest Florida before air conditioning brought the outsiders down, ruining the tempo and flavor of the area. His mastery of the language of the thirties is on target, bringing to mind an era lost forever.
"When You Reach September" embodies the wonderful writings that Bowden has published over the past 60 years. He has mastered the short story and keeps the reader spellbound as he sketches the stories of the "real" south, using true-to-life happenings that he fictionalizes so perfectly.
When you read "Ruby's Cafe," "The Worm Grunters," or "Six Bushels of Corn" you are reliving the period that Bowden remembers so brillently and so clearly. You are there.
In "I MIss," the reader recalls the six ounce bottles of Coca Cola with slivers of ice and roasted peanuts (you can taste the beverage and smell the memories)you recall the movies of his era, the Big Little Books and "I love a Mystery," an old radio program that "Raiders of the Lost Ark" refers to in that great story.
On and on - one story better than the preceeding one.
I have read Jesse Earle Bowden since the 1950s when he began writing for the Pensacola News Journal, and I have seen his writings mature to the master craftsman he is today.
I highly recommend "When You Reach September." Reading it is time well spent.

Book Description
Harry Harrison, an acknowledged master of imaginative fiction, broke new ground with West of Eden. He brought to vivid life the world as it might have been, where dinosaurs survived, where their intelligent descendants challenged humans for mastery of Earth, where a young hunter named Kerrick grew among the dinosaurs and rose to become their most feared enemy.
Now, the awesome saga continues in Winter in Eden...
A new ice age threatens Earth. Facing extinction, the dinosaurs must employ their mastery of biology to swiftly reconquer human territory. Desperately, Kerrick launches an arduous quest to rally a final defense for humankind. With his beloved wife and young son, he heads north to the land of the whale hunters, east into the enemy's stronghold, and south to a fateful reckoning with destiny.
Not since Dune has there been a work of such majestic scope and conception -- a monumental epic of passion, courage, and triumph.
Customer Reviews:
Slow-going story after incredible West Of Eden.......2004-02-28
If West Of Eden was a rich story full of events, this one was quite "static" and almost boring. It seems that author did not know really where to go. After 260 pages, it looks like that nothing has yet happen. As another reader said, the Vainte/Kerrick confrontation was absent.
Good follow-up.......2003-10-28
It is extremely rare that a sequel equals the original for obvious reasons: (1) If the author does not emphasize character then he/she must rely on the novelty of the original work to carry forth of introduce still more novelty or (2) If the author does emphasize character then the reader is usually all too familiar with their lives.
Harrison solves this by limiting the material offered to the reader on the humans in the first novel. Throughout the series he has tried to remain factually or scientifically correct such as the idea that huge dinosaurs could have never developed the brain size or build the structures required for their use and that without the devastating asteroid dinosaurs would have remained the rulers of Earth.
We continue our adventures of the "human boy" who interacts with the dinosaur culture. The dinosaurs are, in the end, simply prototypes of humans in their emotional and ethical outlook - some are good, others bad. This is a good read.

Evolution of a concept.......2003-05-26
I enjoyed this book better than the first. Maybe it's the development of the story, or just revisiting an incredible alternative world. Harrison is a master storyteller and the concept of dinosaurs not going extinct, and making slaves of humans, is mind-boggling. Like other readers, I wish the series were longer.
Happily, I have found another series that is remarkably similar: the Dinosaur Wars series byThomas Hopp. Written recently, they have one advantage over the Eden books. The intelligent human-sized dinosaurs are feathered and bird-like. This is more realistic according to modern science, but Harrison couldn't have known what would later be discovered in China while he was writing of scaly, almost amphibian dinosaurs in these books. Ah, well, everything evolves, including our view of what an intelligent dinosaur might be like. Also, Hopp writes of dinosaurs returning to the present-day world we live in, not an alternative. So there are some cool tank battles and cruise missile counterattacks. Again, an evolution of Harrison's concept.
Hooray for both authors. Long live the subgenre!
Good, but unsatisfying.......2001-05-05
As one would expect from Harrison, Winter in Eden is well-written, and attention-riveting. Its biggest failing is that it follows West of Eden - an incredible novel in all respects. Winter in Eden, while worth reading, seems undeveloped, less focused. Perhaps it is the absence of the Vainte/Kerrick dynamic. Perhaps it is that the Yilane are now familiar and no longer wonderous strange. Or perhaps it is simply that perfection is seldom captured twice.

Book Description
Poul Anderson, one of science fiction's most treasured visionaries, returns with a new masterpiece. Starfarers is the story of an expedition into the far reaches of the galaxy, where answers to mankind's greatest questions await. The saga begins when evidence of an advanced starfaring civilization is discovered by SETI astronomers. An expedition is planned and an eclectic team of scientists chosen to make the journey. But because the destination of the starship Envoy and her crew is 60,000 light years away, the time required to reach the point of origin of the signals and return is 120,000 years; longer than Homo sapiens have been on Earth. And though the crew is ready to face the ramifications of such a trek, no one is prepared for what awaits them at the outer edge of the cosmos or back at the planet they once called home.
Customer Reviews:
Liked this one, liked the way things branched out.......2007-04-05
I liked this book because it seemed so much like real life, not going in one direction. Some of the characters I could have done without, like the requisite bad guy.
I was a little surprised by a basic arithmetic flaw though. One of the premises is that the kith would interbreed into a different phenotype "tribe". This happens very rapidly in the book, too rapidly. A basic calculation shows that if on average 70 years pass for every year on board ship, and the ships orbit for maybe a year at each end, then each person ages 2 years for every 70 back on earth. That means their earth-life span would be about: 35 years per year x 70 years per life = 2,450 years per life span. This indicates that the rough period per reproducing generation is: 35 years per year x 25 years per generation = 875 years. In 10,000 years, for the kith, only 11 human generations would have passed. And if there were centenarians in the kith, then only 3 lifetimes would have passed at 3500 years each. Even if there were only 100 kith to begin with, that is hardly time enough to mix very much at all to produce a new phenotype. Since each ship carried that many, there were thousands of them in the first century.
I liked all the digressions, it made for an interesting story.
Sorta good.......2007-02-17
I liked this book for most of the way through it. Yeah, it got a little bogged down in some places. And it looked like it would have a good ending. It just ended sorta weird like the author didn't know how to end the book. More than that ... in those places where the story bogged down, it just seemed he didn't know where he was going with the story or any of the central themes. Maybe it was about some alien races, maybe it was about romance in space, maybe it was about a starfaring race. Yeah, maybe that was it. Yet still I do like Poul Anderson's writing style. Now I feel like I can't stop my review in a straight forward coherent way. Aargh.
Knowledge of relativity may help.......2006-12-02
I picked this up after reading that Anderson was a 'hard' sci-fi author. Having little understanding of science, I did not understand this book. Why do sci-fi writers write as though they are explaining ideas to get grant money? Anderson's ideas seemed cool, that we could draw near-infinite energy from a substrate universe, but still perplexing. Besides this, the story was boring, and Anderson used an irritating technique for dialogue. He'd state the character's attitude before the dialogue:
"Angrily: Go home, Beatrice." I hope Anderson's other books aren't like Starfarers as I am interested in reading Tau Zero.
Good Offering - But Not for Everyone.......2006-07-27
One of the main reasons I like this book is that it doesn't break Einstein's Theory of Relativity and the FTL barrier... of course, that means interstellar voyages MUST take a long time (even at near relativistic velocities). Folks must find ways to deal with the boredom, and with the side-effects of everyone you know being dead when you return to Earth from an interstellar voyage, 60 relativistic years later.
A good number of side stories with various themes are interjected to keep the book interesting during the 10,000 Earth year round-trip voyage The ENVOY's "crew of 10" must endure (2 of their years in transit, plus 5 on site). Unfortunately, the characters are a bit stale and contrived.
This book will not be for everyone; while there are some exciting "space battles", they are few and far between. This is a cerebral SciFi offering, and there are those who won't like the pace, nor the science. I myself usually prefer a more fast-paced/exciting book... but STARFARERS(1998) was unique and interesting enough to get a decent rating, in spite of the slow pace.
audacious premise, flawed execution..........2006-06-21
Poul Anderson is a classic hard SF writer. His work is consistent, usually thought provoking, and often brilliant. STARFARERS is a sprawling epic. It tells several stories, each of which would be fodder for a reasonably sized novel: the development of intersteller trade (and what such a vagabond life is like, with estrangement from the planet-bound), a distant voyage to another civilization, the displacement due to time dilation on a long voyage, the weirdness of alien intelligences unlike our own... and some commentary on nationalism, etc.
The main focus of this book is the voyage of the ENVOY to meet aliens, a journey that will consume 5000 years in each direction.
There are a handful of good novels in this vein--most SF either uses the "hyperspace" dodge or generation ships. So on that score alone I'm willing to overlook a lot.
What is especially good here are the episodic vignettes (used partially to illustrate the passage of time outside the ENVOY). These link generations of a family together and each is a short story gem.
What is not so good is the story of the ENVOY and her crew. These characters are much less well fleshed out (some border on the two-dimensional), with the requisite Bad Guy telegraphed far ahead. Not as much is done with the aliens as could be and some of the Big Revelations are of the deus ex machina variety.
Still, for such a long novel, it is reasonably well written. It's not terrific--it doesn't approach the best in any of the areas is attempts--but it has its moments.

Appealing but not as good as her earlier books.......2007-01-28
I absolutely adore Vonda McIntyre's earlier books (esp. Dreamsnake, Exile Waiting). This series has a very different feel and I didn't enjoy it as much. Each book covers only a few days of time, so every moment of every character's life during that time is told in the tiniest detail (right down to meal and bathroom breaks). Their double-cylinder spaceship is intriguing and many of the characters are interesting as they prepare for their journey, and I did enjoy spending time with them... just not *that* much time.
There are some interesting sci-fi ideas scattered throughout the book, but it does lack one big idea or focus. The goal of the "crew" (the huge ship is set up more like a university campus) is to search for alien life, which is not a compelling hook in my opinion. When they find it, it's just not that interesting. The scenes of first contact (in later books) lack a sense of importance and so I wasn't left feeling awestruck. Maybe I was expecting too much or missing the point... I simply didn't get that sense of wonder that I got with Dreamsnake.
But I'm currently re-reading the series... so there's no doubt it's retained some appeal through the years.
The best is yet to come.......2002-03-27
Admittedly not the strongest start, but recommended regardless as the first volume of one of my favorite science fiction series of all time. Vonda McIntyre tends to incorporate a few favorite elements into many of her short stories and novels, and I consider this series to be the culmination of her imaginings, even if it didn't get the same kind of critical attention as "Dreamsnake" or "The Moon and the Sun." "Starfarers" is a bit slow, used mainly to introduce the principals and really only hinting at the adventures to come, but the payoff in the next three novels is more than worth it.
Not Disappointed - an exciting, intriguing tale.......1998-04-17
Layer upon layer of juicy speculative detail about Earth in the near-future, particularly North America, and the events leading up to the launch of a space exploration habitat. Not your thing if you're into alien shoot-em-ups--the excitement here is more subtle, emotional and intellectual. Excellent political suspense, fascinating scientific ideas, interpersonal and sexual tension. People I cared about. I was particularly impressed with the way the writer tied all of her diverse storylines together, and spoke authentically from the perspectives of very different characters. I loved this book!
A definite disappointment from a wonderful writer.......1998-02-01
This story looked like it was going to be about a group of people on a journey to the stars to find other life but instead we get all the politics and preparations and junk preceding the journey. The real search for other life only starts on the 4th-to-last-page of the book. The only things making this book barely worth reading are the characters -- but even they aren't like the author's other books' characters in terms of richness and depth.

Dragonstar is a unique space-fantasy campaign setting for the d20 System from Fantasy Flight Games. Written by verteran designers Matt Forbeck and Greg Benage. Prepare to take your adventure to the stars!

The Evolved Form of SpellJammer.......2002-12-28
well, maybe not totally as SJ relied more heavily on magic than hard core science and Dragonstar reverses this trend, but it still fits to some degree. In someways this is SpellJammer advanced in timeframe to the era of Star Wars or Star Trek. The people at Fantasy Flight Games continue to push for their Thug NPC class, which could just as well be served by the generic Warrior NPC class but I digress. The ranger has been altered from a mellee to a missile specialist and fighting with two guns has been relegated to a seperate feat away from two weapon fighting. Wizards now have the option of trading in their spellbooks for a datapad. New stuff is in abundance in this book and in this settings. New skills, new classes, new races and new feats, including one that for many classes is a freebie feat that serves as a gateway into the new toys away from the traditional sword and sorcery fare. Fans of Brent Spiner's role in the ST series he starred in with Levar Burton, Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Merina Sertis and Michael Dorn, will be pleased to note the offering of a new type of construct, the SoulMech which in many ways is science fantasy version of the android. The two new core classes are the Pilot and Mechanist both of which are pumped up Experts but offer a unique flavor to the game and to any party that includes them. All in all a wonderful setting that offers a real alternative to the tried and true formula of the D20 genre. If you prefer the future to the past and don't mind a bit of whimsy Dragonstar is a good setting to explore however a word of caution: Much of the setting is designed as a dark and scary place so if you are turned off by that sort of thing you can still work with it, although alterations may be necessary.
Huge undertaking fairly well done.......2002-06-11
Very nicely done system. Taking D&D to the stars in a fairly hard science way. I really have been impressed with what they came up with, but DAMN they need the next book shipped printed...
Tied for Best Third Party D20 Product.......2002-05-09
This product, along with The Witchfire Trilogy from Privateer press, are tied for the best D20 products by third-parties on the market - and may well come out on top of ANY D20 product, barring the core rules.
Dragonstar is a game that takes D&D to the stars. Unlike spelljammer, it isnt magic that drives the starfaring races, but hard sci fi - but magic is there, still, and often integrates with technology seamlessly.
The setting is very compelling; with the rise of technology, Dragons formed a great empire and conquer the rest of the galaxy. Each Dragon clan, good and evil, rules for 1,000 years. The first 5,000 saw the rule of the 5 good dragon clans. Now, it is mere decades into the first rule of the first of the evil dragons, Mezzebone the Red. He has formed a Secret Police Force of Drow, and the galaxy groans under their lash.
The rules are excellent, the setting is incredible. As with any product, there are a couple of weak points. For instance, the lack of Spellware, and the lack of variant gravity rules, both of which are referenced in the book. They will be included in the upcoming Galaxy Guide, as magic items were in the DMG, so this is understandable, but a tad frustrating. Nevertheless, if you like the D20 system, and if you like the Sci Fi genre, you cannot go wrong with this product.
The artwork does leave a little to be desired, but I don't buy products for their artwork - I buy them for the content, and this product has that, in spades.
Yeah! Fanstay Sci fi!.......2002-04-08
An actual working ranger class! I just about had a heart attack at this one. The races and equipment are cool as well. The new classes are great, I like the mecyhanist best. All in all hte only truely negative thing is that there are no description of the spell ware, but regaurdless, it is a good book.
Good.......2002-04-02
An interesting, if brief set of rules for running DnD in outer space with futuristic weapons and vehicles. Now, I realize that Fantasy Flight Games is probably a smaller company with limited resources, but please, GET SOME REAL ARTWORK. The sketch of the soul mech looks like a cross between a bi Mr. Rogers and some reject from the band REM. The pictures consistently look something I might draw on my notebook out of boredom during class. Also, they could have included more pictures of the vehicles. More and better artwork may cost more, but I know I am glad to pay extra for it.

Creme De Colorado Cookbood.......2007-07-30
I have purchased book for a cousin as I've had tremendous success with
many recipes in this book and value it.
Never fail cookbook.......2006-11-07
This was the first cookbook my parents bought me when I moved out. It's the cookbook I turn to when entertaining. Favorites include the mustard chicken in phyllo and maroon bell cheese spread. Guests always ask for the recipes.
Cut Above Other Recipe Collections!.......2002-01-29
Likely you too have scanned or even invested in those recipe collections to fund a worthy effort, either not expecting to use the recipes or had to search through to find those that one even would want to attempt. Not the case with this collection of the Jr. League of Denver! And over half-a-million in print to date! You'll want one before it goes out of print!
This is large, rich colleciton that is well thought out, organized and bursts forth with uniqueness, creativity and breadth.
Some unique features are its individual sections on Colorado Wild, Mexican and HealthMark Modifications. For example, the game section using Colorado abundance of wildlife is buy a doctor who is in to this, who gives recommendations on preparing to remove gaminess and to improve flavor and maintain health.
How about Wild Pheasant Stroganoff! Indicative of the stuff you'll love finding here and trying.
Also a plus to this delight is notes which accompany most all of the recipes that tell about alternatives, serving suggestions, history where the dish came from, etc. Adds zest for us foodphiles!
One can easily see why so many other reviewers have raved about this -- it enticed me to try it. I think you will enjoy using this collection too!
My most-used cookbook.......2002-01-01
I have over 200 cookbooks, I often times go to sleep reading cookbooks and I relate to the world in many aspects through my stomach. I love food and cooking. This is definitely my most-used cookbook, I don't know how many times I've looked for a recipe, finally gotten this book out and there it was all the time. I consult this book first. I have several Junior League cookbooks, this is my favorite. Everything I have cooked out of this book has been good. Don't even think about it, just buy this book. You won't be diappointed.
One of the Best!.......2001-11-16
This cookbook is one of the best all around cookbooks ever.
I use this one for so many dinners and I love how it gives
you suggestions on what to serve with the entries.
