Book Description
Irish immigrant Molly Murphy is contemplating giving up PI work for something a little less…exciting. Molly has had quite enough excitement recently, thank you very much. Especially from the handsome but deceptive NYPD captain Daniel Sullivan. She wants him out of her life for good. But when Daniel is accused of accepting bribes and lands himself in the Tombs, the notorious city jail, he begs Molly to help prove he was framed. After everything they’ve been through together, how can she turn him down? As Molly finds herself drawn further into Daniel’s case, Molly begins to fear that his trouble is related to one of his investigations: catching a serial killer who is targeting prostitutes, known to the locals as the East Side Ripper….

Rhys has hooked me again.......2007-08-26
I had never been a reader of mystery books until I encountered the first Molly Murphy novel. My fascination with Victorian New York and Ireland made the book appeal to me, and Rhys Bowen's wonderful writing style has kept me reading each book since the first one. I enjoyed Oh Danny Boy every bit as much as the others in the series.
Bowen continues to impress with her wonderful depictions of turn of the century New York City, really making the period and city come alive. The plot drew me along and kept me guessing, and the characters are as endearing as ever. Even though I could guess the choices Molly would make, I still worried about her as I read the book. And though one resolution to her story in this book could be described as an easy out, it was actually what I thought to be the most logical choice, given Molly's rather hectic and often dangerous life. I also loved to see Molly's interactions with Sid, Gus, and Ryan, and am still hooked by Daniel and Molly's relationship. (In fact, flawed character though he is, I think I've developed something of a crush on Daniel Sullivan.)
After this one, I can't wait to see what Bowen has in store for her characters in the future, and I hope to see much more of Molly. But then, that's what I think after every Rhys Bowen book.
Murphy detective series.......2007-08-09
Enjoyed the first book of the series very much - 4 stars, but as the series progressed, so did the swearing. If I want to hear those words, I can go to my local jr. high. I didn't read the 4th book or beyond.
An avid reader.......2006-07-04
Again Rhys Bowen has written an intriguing and well plotted gaslight mystery. Besides the suspenseful plot, Bowen keeps us up to date on Molly's personal life. This episode was an especially good one. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Molly to the rescue.......2006-06-18
Daniel is seen by the new police commissioner accepting a bribe, but things are not always what they appear. Was it a set-up? Molly needs to prove Daniel's innocence. Get comfortable, you are in for another ride with Molly and other reoccurring characters, Arabella Norton, gang leader, Monk Eastman, friends and neighbors , Sid and Gus.
We are introduced to real historical characters, police commissioner John Partridge and Sabella Goodwin, who was hired to be a police matron, and later became a full detective.
Another good read by Rhys Bowen. I'm looking forward to another Molly Murphy novel.
A joyful continuation of the Molly you've learned to love.......2006-05-09
Molly Murphy has been one of the most delightful on-going characters of today's mystery genre. Her turn of the last century knowledge and latitude is restrictive by our standards but aggressive and imaginative by hers. This book wasn't quite up to par with the earlier Molly Murhpy books, but wouldn't part with the experience of the read for any other of its kind.
Molly, like Maisie Dobbs of the same era - seem to bring a sense of daring and challenge and yes, even the mis-judgements to the character. She comes to life as the pages unfold, until at the last, you are left wanting more. Please Rhys Bowen, keep Molly in your creative soul, for a long time to come.

Amazing.......2004-06-03
Amazing!! The author gives fantastic view on human's lifes and their habbits from the point of sociology, psychology and ethics, keeping in mind the mainstream - management in business and how can all the methodically presented principes be usefull in one's life. I can only say that I regret not reading the book earlier, because my life would be much different, for sure. It's a must having this one, since as more times you read it, as more it keeps your thoughts and lifeviews clear. I admire Mr. Adizes' capability of presenting things in a way that anyone can take as much as his receptional capacity is, which is rapidly raising every time the book is rereaded.

An interesting jaunt into fantasy.......2004-08-27
This book is a great diversion for a few days entertainment. I have never been a huge fan of fantasy, but I appreciated this novel and what it had to offer. First off, I'd like to say that the other review on this site is wrong. The synopsis is for the SECOND book in the series (Heartsease), and not "The Devil's Children."
This book begins in a cryptic manner, and intriguingly, ends that way, too. The beginning and end of this book were what held me, although the story within the pages is exciting and interesting as well.
The story revolves around young Nicola Gore, who has been separated from her family during the "Changes." The Changes is a vaguely described as a time when machinery must end because of the effect it has on English humans. England reverts to medieval times, employing the use of blacksmiths and the like, and ridding their world of all machinery like tractors, guns, and alarm clocks.
Nicola returns home to wait for her parents, but after 28 days, leaves with a traveling band of Sikhs. This book expands on her adventures with the new people and their trials and tribulations. It also deals with the pain of Nicky being separated from her family, putting up barriers around her heart, and learning to live independantly.
I won't give away the exciting points of the book. It will suffice to say that there are moments where the book gets gorey and viscious, but never to the point of needing to shield a young adult reader from the book.
Peter Dickinson is a delightful author. He writes incredibly well and I am very happy to have finally read one of his books. I intend to continue reading the series.
I would recommend this book for any younger reader interested in different ways of life. It is not fantasy like "The Lord of the Rings" or "Harry Potter." It is much more likely to happen than either of those. (Although both of the others are wonderful reads, as well.) Overall, I give this book 4 stars. It had moments of dead time that could have been more interesting.
Classic fantasy suitable for all ages.......1997-08-08
The first book in The Changes Trilogy, The Devil's Children starts Margret and Jonathan's quest through a 'changed' England in which everyone, except a chosen few, is deathly and irrationally afraid of technology. Margret is one of the few who have noticed the changes and she must run or be executed as a witch. Her quest: to find out what went wrong, and a possible remedy

Customer Reviews:
A perfectly acceptable entry in the series........2007-06-19
I have nothing terribly bad to say about this novel; unfortunately, I have little good to say beyond the fact that it was a moderately interesting cheap read; it is far from the worst entry in the "Star Trek" genre (as evidenced by the fact that after reading it, I don't feel cheated not only of the few bucks it cost, but of the time I spent reading it) but it is far from the best, either. It didn't move or excite me in any particularly noticeable way. It was a passably entertaining way to spend a few hours, but nothing more than that, in spite of the fact that the story actually had a point which it was trying to make (the foolishness of excessive insularity). It simply didn't make much of an impression, and I rather expect that in a few weeks, I'll have trouble remembering anything about it.
Murmured to Death.......2001-10-15
Star Trek novel's are a dime a dozen, and many of them are worth a dime. Not this one though. This novel is childish, boring, and poorly written. The story opens with a completely laughable idea; a number of planets have acquired virus' on their database. Apparently, in the authors minds these planets have only one database and never make backups. So the plot starts off dealing with the natives upset at the Federation for downloading virus' and causing them to loose all their history & data. Stupid. Now the main part of the story deals with what the authors call a "mobile". Actually, its a big rock with some sort of intelligence.
The writing is childish, with conversations sounding like it belongs on Disney. Also, the author's use the word "murmur" everywhere. No one really says anything in this book, they murmur it.
I would recommend murmuring over to a Peter David novel, or some of the surprisingly good William Shatner Star Trek novels.
Don't waste your dime on this murmur.
This is a great book!.......1998-08-24
An abandoned space habitat is found within an asteroid belt and is heading strait for the sun. Kirk, Spock and the rest of the gang discover an artifical world full of technological marvels and unexpected dangers. Now Kirk and Spock must find a way to save a nearby planet from distruction and time is running out...!
This book is one of the BEST!.......1998-08-24
I hope everyone who is a Star Trek fan will buy this book and have a chance to enjoy it as I have. This book is full of action and keeps you interested till the end. Although, there is a bad part about it. It ends.
This book is worth buying any day!.......1998-08-19
This book is a very interesting and exiting Star Trek book. It has all your favorite characters and even a couple new characters. Will Kirk be able to keep an ongoing alian ship from destroying itself by going into the sun? Well, I know the answer but if you don't, you better just snatch up a copy of this wonderful novel and enjoy yourself as I have!

Nothing outstanding that you probably have not heard of before this purchase but gives you a couple of ideas to do something different. Easy to use.
The big little book of coffee beverages.......2007-05-07
I really liked this book. I was looking for a coffee recipe book and for me this is it! It even helped me develop my own recipes. I would recommend this book to every one.
Just what I was wanting!!!.......2007-04-04
This is a great book for someone with a home espresso machine!! The book is great for people who are just starting out and want to have some variety to their drinks. There is a little bit of everything in here - hot espresso drinks, iced espresso drinks, holiday drinks, espresso drinks with "spirit". There are even drinks for the kids - shakes, floats, and steamers. My kids (17yo, two 6yo, 3 yo, and 16mo) have already tried one or two of the steamers and love them (ok - so the baby hasn't had any yet)!! They think they are drinking coffee just like mommy since it's made with the same machine I use for my espresso drinks. The book looks great to sit on my coffee table as decoration and then easy to grab when I want to use it to make my coffee in the mornings.
Great collection for Amateurs!.......2006-03-11
My husband just bought himself a barista and has been having a blast with this recipe book! He's bought so many of the syrup flavors that we're getting a wine rack to store them. We haven't tried all the drinks yet, but so far we haven't been disappointed with any of them.
latte lover.......2004-12-11
I bought this book from Amazon.com many years ago and have fully enjoyed it. It has a lot of variety with the recipes, it also has a section on Italian Cream sodas, which are very good, especially in the summer time when you would rather have something cool as opposed to something hot. Most all the syrups can be bought from Da Vinci Gourmet if you have no place to buy them in your home town. My favorite recipes vary with this book, but I have tried many. The two best would be Strawberry Amaretto Mocha and Coffee Toffee. Although I do find all of them very good. I wish there were more books like this, it mostly contains all recipes which was what I was looking for.
