Book Description
In this book, award-winning photographer Miguel Gandert records the sacred rituals and dances of the mestizo peoples of the upper Río Grande in 130 exquisite black-and-white photographs. Included are images of the two great Indo-Hispano regional traditions, the Matachines conquest dance drama, complete with monsters and bull, and the multifaceted Comanches celebration, with its equestrian victory play and boisterous dances. The image and story of Our Lady of Guadalupe are in evidence everywhere in a sacred landscape crisscrossed with procession and pilgrimage. Four essays provide the background for viewing Gandert's work. Enrique R. Lamadrid presents the folkloric context for the rituals and dances, tracing the mixture of Indian and Hispanic elements in the public celebrations performed today in towns and villages all along the Río Grande.Ramón A. Gutiérrez examines how the Río Grande culture traveled up and down the river, defying international borders. Lucy R. Lippard discusses the social relations among participants in Gandert's photographs-the subjects, the viewers, and the photographer himself. Chris Wilson provides biographical information on Gandert and traces the development of his aesthetic.

Powerful images of archetype, myth, and heritage!.......2001-03-26
My 28-year residency in New Mexico ended with my recent move to California. Viewing Miguel Gandert's photographs opened the floodgates of memory in ways I had not anticipated.
Gandert's images carry the viewer into the most important dimension of ritual: the experiential element. Witnessing these ritual dances, even as a mere spectator, can be a moving experience. A vivid recollection of one New Year's Day at Jemez Pueblo Plaza comes to mind. I sat crosslegged on the ground at the inward-facing edge of the assembly, following the action of the Matachine dancers. A little boy portraying El Torito, the bull, was being chased by a whip-wielding Abuelo, who represents both wise elder and taunting clown. I held my hands over my head, feigning a protective gesture in mock fear, as they ran around me in ever tightening circles. The double-line pattern of the danzantes suddenly shifted and swept over me on both sides with ribbons flying in a swirl of color. In that moment I found all concept of time and structure collapsing into liminality. Afterwards, I became concerned that I might have inadvertently violated ritual space. Upon expressing my feelings to a tribal member, however, I was assured that no such transgression had taken place and that I might have even received a blessing.
The event described above could, no doubt, be interpreted quite differently from another standpoint and through another's eyes. Similarly, this book can be appreciated on many different levels. It's relevancy to universal elements and ritual may resonate with a widely diverse audience. Gandert and four knowledgeable essayists create a compelling cultural admixture of polarity and paradox. The resultant images emerge through layers of time, space, and history like so many bubbles from some deep, ancient well. This book is truly a verbal and visual treasure.
Readers interested in expanding their knowledge of the Matachines tradition will also find a valuable resource in The Matachines Dance: Ritual Symbolism and Interethnic Relations in the Upper Rio Grande Valley by Sylvia Rodriguez.

Book Description
This Spanish text is useful for teaching Peruvian, Latin American literature and cultural history at university level. It could also be read at upper sixth-form level as the plot is uncomplicated and the emotional atmosphere is immediately graspable. It tells the story of a young man's experience of growing up in highland Peru in a deeply divided society and of his struggle to overcome conflicts of language and culture. He manages to elaborate an alternative vision of Peru, drawing above all on native Indian sensibility and traditions. In the process, the novel draws on key elements of Peruvian history and culture and above all on popular memory. The introduction outlines the main features of the plot and offers a clear interpretation of the major episodes, relating them to key features of modern Peru and explains the chief elements of native culture that figure in the text, such as the use of myth.

As part of my studies in the University of PR, I had the extraordinary experience of reading "the soul" of Jose Maria Arguedas. He trully wrote from his heart about his lack of belonging of either culture he was exposed or came from. As a Hispanic dealing with Hispanics in the States, I strongly recomend this book as an eye opening to the struggles that other people have faced in their life.

The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well is Book One of the Joan of Arc Tapestries--a new series in what you'd think would be a crowded fantasy subgenre. Surprisingly, fantastic treatments of this famous historical figure are pretty much confined to film. And Joan of Arc isn't actually a character in this book. The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well is a St. Joan novel in the same sense that Mary Stewart's classic The Crystal Cave is an Arthurian novel: both depict the early lives of the men and women (mostly men) who will foretell, instruct, and inspire the pivotal character appearing later in the series. Both novels also draw on Breton elements of the Arthurian mythos.
Set in the early 1400s, The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well portrays the origins of Jean Le Drapier, a maimed Breton with powers that may rival Merlin's, and Gilles de Rais, the French nobleman who will one day fight heroically beside Joan and commit the sadistic murders that spawned the Bluebeard legend. The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well also depicts the deadly political struggles between the king and lords of France and (with far less historical basis) between the powerful Christian church and a coexisting underground Celtic paganism. This novel may annoy historical-fiction readers who demand characters with pure period mindsets, but it will please many fans of high fantasy, historical fantasy, alternate history, secret history, and Arthurian fiction. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
The world has long been fascinated by the true story of Joan of Arc. Less well known is the fact that her astounding destiny was predicted by ancient prophecies attributed to Merlin. Based on actual events and real people, The Merlin of St. Gilles Well is a stunning historical fantasy from one of our eras finest historical novelists.
Customer Reviews:
The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well .......2006-05-15
The sole basis for this book's theme, Margaret Murray's theories of a pagan "witch cult" to which numerous historical figures were claimed to belong, is thoroughly discredited and rejected by both historians and most modern pagans alike. Historians have long pointed out that Joan of Arc did not belong to such a cult, and the events in this book likewise bear little resemblance to history.
In terms of writing style and ambiance, this is largely standard fantasy, albeit with prose which is somewhat more over-the-top than the norm.
skillful weaving.......2005-02-06
Only a minority of modern Christians seem aware of the blending and synthesis of the newer religion with the "pagan", that took place historically, and continues to occur to the present day. In this first volume of her Merlin series, Ann Chamberlin makes this fact the "weft" into which she weaves the story of Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years War. Yann le Drapier and Gilles de Rais, the two central characters, form opposite sides of the same coin. Their adventures, always challenging, dangerous and exciting, always have the good of France as their purpose. While working wholeheartedly toward the same goal, their paths diverge and the two young men develop in very different ways. This is a thoughtful retelling of an old story, an effective attempt at presenting familiar events from the perspective of the medieval mind. The legends surrounding Joan of Arc, who was not canonized until the 20th century, are full of misconceptions. The Merlin of St Gilles Well, although Joan is still a peripheral character at this stage, places her more firmly in her own time and place. For me, this makes her more human and more real. In a similar fashion, the legend of Bluebeard arose from the actions of Gilles de Rais, and it is also interesting to trace that legend from its source and discover how it was transformed over time. The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well can be read on several levels, all of them intriguing.
EXCELLENT historical fantasy -- myth & magic gallore, great!.......2001-03-24
I borrowed this book from the library and found it so captivating and enjoyable that I plan to buy. It is definitely a book you would likely read more than once.
The basis of the book is a story of pagan religion & magic in France -- it is told from the point of view of the main character (a child) who grows up seeing horrible violence and wonderful magic. He learns about life and love and the wonders of magic and the world. Ann Chamberlin tells the story with such clarity that you can picture what it was like during that century, you can picture the fantastic situations as they happen -- a wonderful writer! Any fantasy enthusiast will enjoy this story. Wonderful book!
I look forward to book two with great enthusiasm!
This flight into historical fantasy is worth the time!.......2000-11-09
For historical and fantasy fiction lovers, "The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well" is right on target. And Ann Chamerlin begins a promising Joan of Arc series!
It is the early 15th century and is the story of Jean Le Drapier, who is a crippled man with his own "magical powers" (ala Merlin) and a French nobleman Gilles de Rais. Gilles is "destined" one day to fight alongside the Maid of Orleans herself; he will also become the progenitor of the Bluebeard legends! As in the actual story, this novel examines the internal political, social, and religious struggles among the people of France and does so in a most appealing manner!
As the story begins, Guy de Rais, who is poaching on illegal grounds, accidentally shoots in the hand a young peasant boy, Yann, who, naturally (or "unnaturally") becomes infected; the wound cripples him and he begins to have fits and see visions--he sees the salvation of France through Joan of Arc, among other "sights." There is the traditional hermit, who insists that de Rais become resonsible for the child's upbringing. (De Rais has a son named Gilles, who grows up with Yann.) And while this may be reminiscent of Mary Stewart's Merlin/Arthur trilogy ("The Crystal Cave," etc.), Chamberlin's story stands on its own.
As the story progresses Yann and Gilles explore--and embrace--the Old Religion and during ritual ceremonies, Gilles tatoos himself (chin: blue--hence, "Bluebeard"). Guy de Rais attacks these rituals (he is not an advocate of the Old Religion) and mortally wounds the hermit. Yann issues a curse (they all die soon after!) and inherits the shrine. The beauty of fiction is that the author is permitted to take liberties and Chamberlin does with the historical accounts; but no matter. This is fiction--and fantasy fiction at that--and as such the author has created an exciting, compelling work. We can only encourage her to publish the next episode. (Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)
Fantasy at its Best.......2000-06-30
It's not an easy feat to write a fantasy novel that will stand out from others, but that is exactly what Ann Chamberlain has done. She has adeptly managed to seamlessly blend truth, fiction and myth in a story that transports readers to another time and place. Although there are instances where the names and places were a bit confusing, it was easy to overlook that and focus on how skillfully the story was told. It read more like history than fantasy and at times I had to remind myself that the spells of magic in the book were fictional...or weren't they? That's what Ms.Chamberlain makes you think and feel. At some points in the book I felt the influence of pagan rites (for lack of a better term) and realized that she had successfully woven it into her story and managed to show it in a better light than others have previously done. In this story the heretical and heathenish behavior unfavored by the Catholic church was shown to the reader to have origins of good intentions--something that I'd never seen before in a book. Ms. Chamberlain's storytelling also was successful in creating characters that were extremely likeable and/or despicable. I pitied Jean Le Drapier and also liked and disliked Gilles, his milk-brother. I have yet to make a determination about his character until the next book, which unfortunately won't be out for several months. For me, this book is exceptionally good and I'll be sure to put it right next to my other favorite trilogy: The Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series by Tad Williams.

Book Description
What do Jayne Mansfield, Pythagoras, Disney "imagineers," and the Virgin Mary have in common? They are all privileged to be protagonists in the stories in Paul Di Filippo's newest collection. Twenty tales to rock the mind, of mental pygmies and product placement, gentle giants and teen witches. The title story is a Robert Williams cartoon come to life, in which the narrator races roadsters in "a match of Cosmic Chicken out in space" with a pair of visiting aliens. The inimitable Di Filippo is known for his calculated lack of restraint and his incredible stylistic versatility.

Twenty impossible-to-catalog tales .......2004-10-12
Fans of Paul DiFilippo will readily acknowledge his penchant for sexy, funky tales: he was the author of the Steampunk Trilogy which offered a whole new twist on the genre of science fiction, he's been nominated for a Sturgeon Award, a Hugo and a World Fantasy Award, and he specializes in unusual settings and plots. One would expect the same of his latest Neutrino Drag: Stories - and he doesn't disappoint. Here are twenty impossible-to-catalog tales ranging from teen witches and the Virgin Mary to alternate worlds of paranoia and even tongue-in-cheek humor. Highly recommended; especially for prior DiFilippo fans.

The Opinionated Knitter.......2007-08-02
If you are a knitter this is one great book. The service was quick, and if the book was used - which it was supposed to be - you would never know!
Just a knitiac's opinion..........2007-05-12
This is one of the best knitting books on the market. Elizabeth Zimmermann excelled at her craft and she encourages individuals to reach out and experience their own creativity rather than simply following a pattern. Patterns are great, but adding a bit of our own individuallity is what makes a piece special. This is a definite read for anyone who wants to move into design - no license required.
The Opinions of Elizabeth & How to knit........2007-05-12
No self-respecting knitter should be without this marvelous book in their
collection! Elizabeth's wonderful wit & humor are so refreshing! Her knowledge of knitting, her tips, & techniques are inspiring & stimulating to the newest knitter, & the most experienced ones. In today's knitting classes, her innovative designs, fashions, & techniques are still talked about, referred to, & passed on. Thankfully, we also have her unique style of writing to give us guidance -- videos to watch, & learn from. This is just a wonderful book to own!
the knittting goddess.......2007-03-12
I love, love, love this book. It is true that most, if not all, of the patterns are probably available elsewhere but it is os convenient to have them in one place. For EZ fans, a large part of her appeal is her chattiness & anecdotes. You feel like you have a friend sitting at your elbow instructing you. As for the reviewer who was hoping for more definite instructions (perhaps with specific needle size, yarn & more explicit instructions?) - EZ was largely about helping knitters to understand the structure & anatomy of knitting & people so one can devise (or "unvent" as she might have said) one's own designs. This is definitely not a book for rank beginners (altho I would encourage any who think it interesting to buy it & read through it - you'll probably learn a lot & may be ready for the projects even before you know it) or blind followers but clearly for the thinking knitter. Lord knows there are plenty of the other kind - I wish there were more of this kind!
Lazy Knitter.......2007-03-08
I had purchased Elizabeth Zimmermann's newsletters many years ago and had lost the issues with my favorite patterns. Most of the newsletters are included in this book as well as anecdotes of Elizabeth's life. Elizabeth Zimmermann's daugher has lovingly had this collection of her mother's knitting newsletters published. Her patterns are written for adventurous knitters who do not need detailed instructions. Photos clearly show what these garments will look like on a person's body. I especially enjoyed seeing Elizabeth's handwriting and could almost hear her talking.
