Customer Reviews:
First three chapters were awful, but it gets better.......2007-08-20
This is my first Nora Roberts novel and, after reading the first three chapters, I went online to cancel my order for the next four novels--it was that bad. Fortunately, it gets better. It's partly because she drowns the reader in sci-fi descriptions right at the beginning to update them about what it's like to live in 2058 and partly because the protagonist Eve Dallas starts out as not a very likeable character. I would also have to say that Roberts begins the novel with way too many adjectives that just made it irritating to read. After about the sixth chapter, it definitely got better and I'm hoping the sequels will also be better.
Some things were predictable, many things didn't quite fit, but the romance between Roarke and Dallas is a nice sideline and they do seem perfect for each other. Since 26 novels in this series seem to have already been written in just 12 years, I'm hoping the writing gets better and that she isn't just churning out novels every month (she has other series as well). I would definitely have to say that I like other authors' writing style much better, but quite frankly I'm running out of authors to read. When I read a book, I prefer to have it read like the person is speaking to me, not like I'm reading an encyclopedia with a plot included. The first part of the novel reads more like the latter, while the last part reads more like the former. That being said, I did enjoy it enough to finish the novel in a day (but it was a weekend and I read a lot) and I did place a subsequent order for the sequel. I think if you like Preston and Child or Koontz, you will like this one. The ideas of what the future would be like are sometimes progressive and imaginative (licensed prostitutes and lasers instead of messy handguns), while at other times downright frightening (unlimited Congressional terms and only the rich can afford real coffee).
I've heard many reviewers bash sex scenes by various authors. The sex scenes in this novel fit, but weren't particularly well-written. I had to read two at least twice to understand what the author was eluding to and one, I'm afraid, I still don't quite get. I guess maybe because I've been married for almost two decades. I think if the reader doesn't get it (and I'm pretty enlightened), then maybe it's just poorly written. There were a couple of other parts in the book that I didn't get either that had nothing to do with sex scenes. Sometimes you just need to say what you want to say and not use so many colorful adjectives and metaphors to describe it.
My last comment has to do with the length of the novel. It's considerably shorter than Dean Koontz paperbacks or Preston and Child paperbacks. I think it took me four hours to read and it usually takes me six hours to read Koontz or Preston and Child. Personally, I liked the shorter length and I didn't feel cheated at all. The plot was well-developed by the end and I thoroughly enjoyed the way Roberts tied up all the loose ends--it fit and wasn't just hastily finished. So I enjoy the shorter length. I wish other authors could complete an entire novel in that amount of space. (I sometimes feel that Koontz rushes to find an ending in the last two chapters and am left somewhat frustrated with the ending.)
I sometimes wish Amazon allowed ten star ratings instead of only five. I would give the plot a 10 and the writing a 5 or 6.
Good romantic suspense. .......2007-08-13
Having read about a half dozen Roberts books of very mixed quality, this is definately my favorite so far. It starts out with the murder of a prostitute, who also happens to be the granddaughter of a conservative senator. The killer has left a note, "One of Six", suggesting a serial killer. Eve Dallas is on the case, and more bodies pop up. While investigating the case, Dallas falls in love with a mysterious businessman known only as Roarke.
This time, Roberts doesn't waste any time on irrelevant subplots. The story starts from page one and keeps its pace throughout. The romance does not feel gratuitous as in some romantic suspense novels; it's well connected to the main plot. "Naked in Death" is a quick, entertaining read for romance and (non-romance) mystery readers alike.
Well worth the price, better than CD.......2007-08-09
30+ dollars for a set of CD's that my wife would have to swap and keep track of......no way.
This title was on ONE (1) MP3 Cd, and was easily copied (no copy protection) to my wife's MP3 player and she was listeing to the entire book at night as she worked. No swapping discs, and the original disc stayed in the dvd-like case SAFE. It is the EXACT same version as found on the audio CD.
I will definately be buying Books on MP3 if I have a choice in the matter. The convenience AND price makes this a no brainer.
The shipping and price was very fair and best of all, IT WAS IN STOCK. AMAZON is fast becoming my first chioce for many things.
A real page turner.......2007-08-04
This one gave me the background on Roarke and Eve Dallas. Great summer read.
Once you read this one you will be HOOKED!.......2007-08-03
It all starts right here with Eve, Roarke, Mavis and the rest of the "In Death" family. The cases are serious and this one leads her right to a love she would have never imagined could belong to her. Roarke is absolutely to die for. And, I don't know of anyone out there who doesn't want a gourmet cup of coffee after this book either.

Book Description
Naked in Death
Eve Dallas is a New York police lieutenant hunting for a ruthless killer. In over ten years on the force, she's seen it all - and knows that her survival depends on her instincts. And she's going against every warning telling her not to get involved with Roarke, an Irish billionaire - and suspect in Eve's murder investigation. But passion and seduction have rules of their own, and it's up to Eve to take a chance in the arms of a man she knows nothing about - except the addictive hunger of needing his touch.
Glory in Death
The first victim was found lying on a sidewalk in the rain. The second was murdered in her own apartment building. Police lieutenant Eve Dallas had no problem finding connections between the two crimes. Both victims were beautiful and highly successful women. Their glamorous lives and loves were the talk of the city. And their intimate relations with men of great power and wealth provided Eve with a long list of suspects -including her own lover, Roarke.
Immortal in Death
She was one of the most sought after women in the world. A top model who would stop at nothing to get what she wanted - even another woman's man. And now she was dead, the victim of a brutal murder. Police lieutenant Eve Dallas put her professional life on the line to take the case when suspicion fell on her best friend, the other woman in the fatal love triangle.

Sci/Fi & Romance - Who Thought?.......2007-09-20
This is a wonderful series of books. PLEASE - start at the beginning and read them in order. Science fiction, police mystery, romance, and comedy! There is something for everyone. Not really into sci/fi? Don't worry - it is not overly done. A great cast of characters working together.
Excellent way to start this series.......2004-11-25
This set is the 1st three books in an Excellent Series. If you like books in a series that follows one character, this is a must have. These stories are actually two parallel stories. They will tug on your heartstrings with the lessons learned in love and friendship, as well as the struggle to to discover oneself and appeal to your sense of thrill seeking and the search for justice. Eve Dallas, a hard nose New York City Homicide Detective, breaks down the case, layer by layer as she stands for her victims. These books are set in the year 2058, a future that is so tangible you can see and feel the rightness of how it's portrayed. Beatifully written and in such depth that you watch Eve Develop into a better person as she solves each case and stands for the victims that no longer have any means of standing for themselves. Her sense of right and wrong is so true to real life, flaws and all. Her struggles to maintain the line without crossing over it, all the while fighting the memories of a past that has haunted her since she was found in an alley in Dallas, TX, a child, broken and suffering from amnesia.
Naked in Death is the start of your introduction to the Homicide detective that cares to much, works too hard, and searches for the Killer of a Senator's daughter. It's also her first introduction to Roarke, her main suspect. He is a dynamic billionaire that has always lived on the other side of the law, bent the rules when it suited him, and is unbelievablly sexy and elusive. As she investigates him for the case, her heart is pulled to him in a way that is inconceivable to her. Watch her struggle with the case, search for justice, and discover the possiblities of what could be.
Glory in Death. Eve is searching for a killer that is attacking high profile women in New York. As she sifts through the layers of evidence, She must find the killer and prove that her new lover Roarke isn't the killer though the evidence says he could be involved.
Immortal in Death: Eve must prove that her best friend isn't a killer though all the evidence says she's guilty. As her new love blossoms she struggles with having a personal life and protecting those she holds dear to heart.
After reading these books I was hooked and determined to read each and every book in the series. I anxiously await the release of the next in the series. I would recommend this series to anyone that loves romance novels and has a passion for the suspence of mysteries.

Book Description
Don't say a word. Bobby Barnes was ten the day his father shot himself, and the first lesson he learned about it was that he should never tell a soul because people might reject him. From that day forward, he hid his secret behind a series of masks--the mask of the Eagle Scout, the wise doctor, community and church leader--and feared that one day his mask would be torn off and he would be naked amid his humiliation and self-doubt. This is the story of a man who achieved the outward signs of success but yearned for inner peace. It took Bob Barnes many years and an unexpected turn of events to discover himself and realize the true meaning of his life. Read his story, and you will learn that doctors are human; they are susceptible to emotional pain and doubts about their profession. Read his story, and learn something about yourself.
" ... a deeply moving account of someone coming to grips with a painful past." - Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
" ... should prove helpful to many people." - Frederick Buechner
Customer Reviews:
The Good Doctor is Naked, Robert Hardy Barnes, MD.......2004-08-26
What a vital message!
"The Good Doctor is Naked" is Bob Barnes' personal story; but for me this book is so much more. For me, it speaks of what I have come to believe: I believe that if we, as a society, are to save ourselves from the terribly sad and neurotic existence we lead, we must re-define the word success.
Here is a medical doctor who has achieved it all; society would say, "This guy made it... big!" I say that Bob Barnes has "made it...big",too. But I say it for different reasons: I say it because he has dared to be vulnerable, I say it because he has dared to be honest, I say it because he has dared to challenge his own definition of the word "success."
Bob Barnes is saying to me that he could not find personal success until the "Real Bob Barnes" stood up. He is saying to me that his achievements stand; but that he is not the measure of his achievements. He is saying to me that he is the measure of his self knowledge, the measure of his self love, the measure of his honesty, the measure of his empathy and the measure of his service to his fellow man.
What a wonderful definition of success.

A Rosenbergian Labyrinth.......2006-07-01
Not every Sherlock Holmes fan will have the patience to follow Rosenberg down his amazing labyrinth, but the trip, I think, is worth the effort. It is sort of like meeting James Joyce on the dark side of the moon with Doyle sipping tea on the edge of madness. Is it scholarship or an enormous joke? I love this sort of literary hodgepodge. I found it fascinating if taken with just a grain of salt. Rosenberg links Holmes with Nietzsche, Wilde, Dionysus, Jesus Christ, Catullus,Bunyan, Browning, Boccaccio, Bonaparte, Racine, Frankenstein, Flaubert, George Sand, Plato, Poe, Neruda, etc. etc. etc. Is that your cup of tea? Sip it carefully. Have a ball.

Customer Reviews:
This book doesn't even deserve one star!!.......2007-08-19
In the first chapter Robert Webster writes about four sister who are at their father funeral-he states "She and the two of the sisters were in fact having sex (and children)with their father." This story if true is called molestation not "SEX" Why would you even put this in a book?
If that isn't offensive enough in the second chapter he states "I have never heard of of a single case of a male funeral home employee raping or having other inappropriate physical contact with a female decedent. I have, however, heard of some sordid tales involving homosexual personnel."
What an offensive statement!! To make such a statement is ignorant and not worth of anyone reading!!
Beyond that you would have to review the rest of this book yourself as I tossed my copy in the garbage!
Like hearing a storyteller in person.......2007-05-04
This book is so down to earth. If Mr. Webster could expand on more of his life experiences as a funeral director, who knows, the book in itself is almost good enough for a movie. The only missing ingredient is a major plot that will put the chapters together.
Reading this book, if localized and with a plot would give it the spice that it lacks and certainly a book that you may not want to put down until you are done.
Good job.
A Fantastic Read!! Wont want to put it down!!!.......2007-02-03
This book contains several stories of the author, Robert D. Webster, experiences of working in the funeral industry. Some are humorous, some are gross, some are even sad, but all are well written. I felt as if Mr. Webster and I were having a conversation instead of me reading a book. Mr. Webster takes such care and compassion when he prepares a body you will find yourself wanting to use his services when you must arrange a funeral. I hope that Mr. Webster has many more memoirs in the works!!
Very interesting book.......2006-09-15
I just got my copy,it is a very fascinating look at the business of dying from the prospective of a professional.
A funny approach to a serious subject.

This is a posthumous collaboration by two of SF's greatest writers, Alfred Bester and Roger Zelazny. Bester had completed half of the manuscript before his death in 1987, and then Zelazny finished it off before his own passing in 1995. In his introduction to this strange mix, Greg Bear calls the work an improvisational duet, and he is, as usual, right on the mark. This isn't so much a coherent novel as a story passed between two of the genre's more stylish writers. Fans looking for The Demolished Man or Nine Princes in Amber will be disappointed. Instead, what they'll find is the tale of Alf Noir, a reporter who travels to Rome where he finds a 3,000-year-old shop that trades in the strange dealings of the mind. Not only is the shop not what it seems, but its proprietor, Adam Maser, is not what he seems. And soon Alf will come to realize that there is something unusual about himself as well. --Craig E. Engler
Customer Reviews:
Pure insanity, but would have been better if finished by A.B.......2002-03-18
This book is like almost any work of Phillip K. Dick...incredibly insane, but as hard to stop reading as it is to stop smoking... The problem is that I just keep getting this nagging feeling that the book would have been better if Alfred's insanity would've finished it...instead, you can clearly tell Zelazny's parts because they're just too sane--I'd have liked for Alfred's insanity to culminate in the incredible ending that it already has.
There's an explenation..........2001-01-11
The book deserves ofcourse 5 stars ,but since each of the giants wrote better on his own - let there be four.
It's almost blesphemy ,but I think the book would have come out better if Bester would be alive to finish it on his own. Not that the late Zelazny ruined it or something ,it's just that opposite to a few other reviewers ,I could tell when Bester stops and Zelazny takes over. It's not a bad change ,bad there's a change. of pace .of style. of plot direction.
As it came out at last ,it's a wonderfully written ,humoristic (not really FUNNY but light-hearted) ,with that Bester quality of PKD chaos ,but not as gloomy ,and zelazny's action ,and a number of sub-plots converging at the last possible point. Overall one of the best half-light reads i've had.(half-light 'cause Bester's style is more heavy ,but not domminant).
Very recommended.
A very nice blend.......2000-08-27
This book blended the two author's styles nicely. It was a lot of fun on the second read, trying to pick which part was written by whom. The fight scenes were pure Zelazny. Wonderfully crafted by a skilled fencer & Aikidoist.
Psychoshop.......2000-08-03
This book is very fast pased and gets interesting from page one. The characters are not what you expect. And eveery time you see them in a new light
Good, thought provoking book.......1999-03-07
I picked this book up because I thought the title and the cover seemed pretty interesting. Once I started reading I couldn't stop, which is rare for me because I prefere TV. Yet i sat there for a few long sessions and finished the book. I think the books views and their meddlings in history are very well thought out. The plot twists are superb and the fight scene is fantastic. I really enjoied this book.

Following her first pregnancy at age 47, award-winning cookbook author Martha Rose Shulman teamed up with Jane Davis, an obstetrician/gynecologist who loves to cook. The result is Every Woman's Guide to Eating During Pregnancy, a readable and practical handbook for mothers about nourishing their growing or breastfeeding child--while enjoying delicious, healthful food. The authors take a fresh and festive view of eating during pregnancy by offering 100 tasty recipes framed in a crash course on nutrition. Refusing to obsess about calories and fat grams, the authors evaluate foods in terms of nutrients--what they do for your body and your baby. "With this book, you can throw out the calculator and reach again for your plate," they promise.
While Shulman and Davis offer solid answers to the usual food queries--how to cope with nausea, how much weight is too much--their approach shines by detailing the nutrition challenges of first-trimester queasiness, second-trimester ravenousness, and third-trimester fullness. The recipes are hip, healthy, and not for pregnant women only. They include fruit soups, black-eyed pea pâté, beef and arugula salad, Mediterranean chicken stew, corn gratin, and peach bread pudding. These easy-to-prepare meals are followed by chapters that focus on eating plans for individual needs such as vegan or lactose-free diets and the special needs of high-risk pregnancy, including gestational diabetes and multiple births. The author's skillful balance of information, advice, and recipes will allow mothers to celebrate both food and family. --Barbara Mackoff

The author does not pile on the guilt, simply provides some good options for healthy eating. There is a list of foods to satisfy regular cravings with, sweet, sour, juicy, etc...a good way to fulfill a craving with a healthy alternative.
Too much soy.......2007-02-03
I was hoping that this book would have more information on nutritional requirements. Instead, there's just a listing for each trimester of what your body needs, none of which is exactly a shocker. For example, the second trimester list is Protein, Iron, Potassium, Chromium, and Vitamin C. No information on ammounts that your body needs. The information is also not all that good. For example, the book's only mention of cholesterol is a warning than high cholesterol is dangerous. During pregnancy, it's almost impossible to have too-high cholesterol: low cholesterol in pregant women has been linked to birth defects.
This book also falls victim to the blather about not to gaining too much weight. Please! You're pregnant! I'm not saying to gorge yourself with potato chips and ice cream, but the propogation of the myth that there's a certain amount that you're supposed to gain, and that under or over is very bad, is pretty annoying in a book about nutrition. I'm early on, and haven't gained a pound yet, but it's much more important to eat a healthy diet than it is to pay attention to the numbers on he scale.
I was also disapointed that it seemed every recipe included soy. I'm tired of it being labeled a wonder food, when there is little proof that it's actually healthy or nutritionally beneficial, and mounting proof that it can harm both mother and child when eaten in quantity.
The recipes were basic, and very simple: which can be a big plus during pregnancy when hunger can come on quickly, or when you're not up to preparing a big meal. But sometimes they seemed a little too basic: does anyone really need a recipe for egg salad? And I'm not sure the recipe entitled "Salmon Fillets cooked in the microwave" (instructions: microwave salmon, serve with tofu or lemon wedges) really counts as the height of gourmet cooking... particularly since there's no discussion of the dangers of factory farmed salmon that any OB will tell you about, and there's the soy problem again.
I did find the list at the very end of various different nutrients and vitamins, with what they do during pregnancy and the places they can be found, informative and helpful.
Love it!.......2006-10-13
I love this book--Wonderful recipes--I have loved every single one that I have tried--and I really like the menu plans in the back of this book. If you love to cook--this is the book for you.
A really helpful book of delicious substance........2006-09-14
I bought this book before the birth of my first child in 2003 and have been referring to it ever since for great recipes and healthful advice. My favorite aspect of the book besides the delicious and easy recipes are the specialized menus in the back of the book. These menus address special issues such as diabetic specific diet or lower carb specific diet for women that need to closely monitor their weight gain during pregnancy.
Now that I am pregnant again I refer to this book almost daily. Each recipe is accompanied by a nutritional guide - you can focus on fiber or omega-3 nutrients - maybe you need more protein or complex carbs in your diet. The recipes are delicious - like the Thai Salad or the Lentil Soup - Sometimes I forget how nutritious these recipes are and SO easy to prepare!
This book is worth every penny (and I am not one who usually enjoys cookbooks without photography). You can use this book to menus for after the pregnancy and well beyond.
not just for pregnancy!.......2006-05-20
I bought this book for my wife while she was pregnant. She never got around to reading it until after our baby was born. Now, a year and a half later, we still refer to it at least a few times a week. Some of our favorite recipes are: banana bread, egg salad, chicken breasts three ways, and the salad dressing recipes. Most all of the recipes are healthy and so good! They are also easy! Buy this book!
