Book Description
The bestselling master of astonishing adventure James Rollins delivers his most relentlessly exciting page-turner to date—a gripping and explosive novel of an ancient conspiracy to create a terrifying new world order out of the ashes of modern civilization.
The crime is inhumanly cruel with horrific consequences both unthinkable and inevitable. During a service at a cathedral in Cologne, Germany, a band of armed intruders dressed in monks' robes unleash a nightmare of blood and terror, ruthlessly gunning down worshippers and clergy alike. The killers haven't come for the church's gold and valuable artwork, but for a priceless treasure secreted within: the preserved bones of the Three Magi who once came to pay homage to a newborn savior. As they flee the carnage they have wrought, they carry a prize that could reshape the world.
The Vatican is in turmoil, and Lieutenant Rachel Verona of Rome's carabinieri is assigned to lead the investigation. But no ordinary police organization alone can deal with the bizarre theft and massacre, and SIGMA Force—an elite covert arm of the U.S. Defense Department—is called in under the command of Grayson Pierce. New to SIGMA, Pierce assembles a crack team of scientific and Special Forces operatives to unravel the mystery of the stolen bones, and together they set out on a twisting trail through a labyrinth of clues and dark revelations that carry them to the sites of the Seven Wonders of the World—and to the doorstep of the mystical and terrifying Dragon Court.
An ancient, secret fraternity of alchemists and assassins, the master-adepts of the Dragon Court have plans for the sacred remains that will alter the future of humankind in devastating ways that only the maddest of zealots could desire—and they will let nothing and no one stand in their way. Suddenly Pierce, Verona, and the SIGMA team are the hunted as well as the hunters, forced to use every skill they possess to survive as they follow the bones to the ultimate confrontation between darkness and light—in a lost place of history where science and religion will unite to unleash a horror not seen since the beginning of time.
A masterful novel that combines the exhilarating mysticism of
The Da Vinci Code with the pulse-pounding action of a Tom Clancy thriller, James Rollins's Map of Bones is destined to be a modern classic that will stand among the very best adventure tales ever written.

Customer Reviews:
This book is terribly written........2007-10-05
I am usually a sucker for these thrillers, but this was terrible. It was poorly written and had very bad dialogue. I couldn't even finish it despite the fact that the setting was in Europe and had a good premise. I don't understand why people liked this book.
I liked it!.......2007-10-03
I thought this was an ejoyable thriller. I am tired of people who all have the same "It's so unrealistic" line. Guess what? There are alot of unrealistic books out there that are still entertaining and well-done. This is an action packed thriller that will keep you turning pages and entertained.
Full of Adventure.......2007-09-11
My husband and I read this book at the same time, and we both loved it. It's so interesting to travel around Europe with the characters and get a little history with the adventure. It reminded us a lot of DeVinci Code. The book had a nice, swift pace and a lot of action. My husband felt that they got a little corny with the "emotions" between the man and woman, but they didn't focus on it too much. The main focus was definitely on the action, with just a few corny love moments. We both liked this book a lot and would recommend it. Everyone I've spoken to that read it enjoyed it as well.
Not Believable, doesen't get any better with time........2007-09-07
This book, as all other Rollins' books, suffer/s from the same error in story telling. Very simply, they are not believable. These so called professional characters and agencies are at best amateurish and at worst, totally incompetent. Even a good Sci Fi book must be believable or plausible. Rollins fails terribly on this believability issue. The plots are good but held together with smoke and mirrors.
Reading Rollins' books are a frustrating endeavor. This and other Rollins' thrillers could be a great books but it just doesn't happen. I give up waiting for better. There are much better thrillers being written.
Better than the DaVinci Code.......2007-08-27
Not sure which came first - the DaVinci Code or this book, but this is definitely better. The two books are very similar with regard to religious secrets, code-breaking, etc. Had I read Map of Bones first, I would have loved it 10 times more, as it is more believable and a more interesting plot. I still enjoyed it, but couldn't help thinking "gee, this is a lot like the DaVinci Code..."
Customer Reviews:
A great divination system.......2007-08-31
I really, really liked this book. It's the handbook for a Western reinterpretation of a method of divination with bones used by several tribes in Africa. It's nice to see something derived from a culture that's not from Europe, Asia, or North America. The author is quite clear about her sources and the derivation of the system she presents, rather than trying to say "This is exactly how the Africans do it!" While there aren't in-text citations, there is a bibliography, which earns points.
The basic system consists of tossing four bones-a long bone, a small bone, a broken bone, and a fat bone-onto a tri-parte circle, each section standing for a different set of qualities. The meaning of the bone depends on where it falls in the circle, and where it is in relation to other bones. The bulk of the book is dedicated to summaries of what each bone/circle combination means and suggestions on how to interpret it.
Unfortunately, I didn't get the casting cloth that originally came with it, but it'd be a simple thing to make. Additionally, since I bought the book alone, I had to get my own bones (though this was relatively easy, considering the kind of artwork I create). The concept is wonderfully simple, though, and those who are artistically inclined can easily reproduce their own set, especially since this is out of production.
Overall, a unique divination system that I intend to make good use of.
The Oracle of the Bones.......2005-04-14
This is one of those slender works that is all meat and
no fat. The book comes with a set of bones and a casting cloth. The
introduction to the history of bone casting for divination is
short and concise. I personally prefer a short history. Then
it's into the art of bone casting and divination using bones.
I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in the shamanic divinatory
arts of primitive peoples. This book is also a great addition to the
occult library and a must for the serious occult student.

A bit morbid - but also fascinating and highly useful!.......1999-09-22
This is a very professionally produced map -- not like those lame "Map To The Stars' Homes" that are sold on street corners throughout the Hollywood and Beverly Hills area. So many people like to visit the gravesite of a beloved star when they're in L.A., but where to go? How to find it? Would YOU know where to find Marilyn Monroe's grave? Or Rudolph Valentino's? This map pin-points the exact location of the final resting place of hundreds of stars. It's amazing how much info. they packed onto two sides of this map (7 cemeteries in all), and yet were able to keep it clean and readable! Talk about a great gift idea or stocking stuffer. Don't go to L.A. without it!
Why hasnýt this been done before? Itýs funny and accurate!.......1999-05-21
My husband and I bought a copy of The Map to the Stars' Bones when we went to Los Angeles on vacation. First, we bought the map to the stars homes and spent an afternoon driving around Beverly Hills looking at houses the stars moved out of 30 years ago (not very exciting..). The map to the Stars Bones was an entirely different experience. We both love old movies. I can't easily explain the feeling we had when we came across the graves of the actual stars. This is something I never thought I'd do, but I'm so glad we did. When you see their actual gravesites, you realize what they've meant to you - in some cases almost like family. As we came across each person, we talked about our favorite movies, where we saw them and who we were with. It was an incredible and very "hollywood" experience. The map had great info on each person, and was simple to follow. I really recommend it for anyone going to Los Angeles or anyone interested in old Hollywood.

Grrr...........2005-08-26
Only Tamora Pierce's book 'Wild Magic' deserves to bear that name! I wish Numair could rid the world of this story...
Excellent Finale to the Series.......2004-04-09
This is the penultimate book of the 3-book series, and one of the best I have read. All the various sub-plots that have been stirring in the first and second book are all answered in excellent fashion here.
Calandryll, Katya and Bracht, fresh on the trail of Rhythamun and on their way out of Cuan Na'For and into an unknown land, are soon caught up in a vast war that is encompassing the countryside. To complicate things even more, Rhythamun is now more powerful the closer he gets to his goal and unleashes brutal monsters that hunt our heroes the closer they get to him.
But not all obstacles that face the three are the stuff of nightmares. A beautiful undead seductress hunts our heroes as well, adding to the suspense and complexity of this wonderful piece of literature.
Customer Reviews:
I want to beat the characters bloody.......2005-12-29
This book isn't bad, but there are a few things that really annoy me and prevent me from liking it more. First of all, while the first book in the series had a lot of different action, this one is mostly one long, mostly boring trip across the plains, and tends to be more discussion based than action based. And the discussions tend to be rehashing the same issues over and over again. A typical scene will have the character Bracht deciding he doesn't trust someone and so wanting to yell at them and stab them and then 20 pages of trying to convince him that the person is a friend. Then when someone tries to explain something, he complains about "riddles." I wanted to grab him and shake him and tell him to shut the heck up and just listen. I don't remember reacting this way to the previous books and so I think he's definitely getting more annoying as the story progresses.
The other notable issue I would mention is that once every ten pages or so the author will throw in some incredibly obscure word that maybe one in a thousand readers has ever seen before. I started to write them down in preparation for writing this review. Some examples include: estivatious, hymenopterous, monticule and prognathous. Now I am well read and work as a copy editor and still he manages to drag up words I would never even guess existed. I don't know if he's trying to impress someone with his vocabulary or what, but I don't see a reason why these need to be in there. The rest of the book is perfectly understandable, and then he will toss that in out of the blue.
Anyway, the book is decent all in all, and if you read the first two you need to finish the series. It's worth reading, but be prepared to endure long, frustrating arguments and have your dictionary handy.
A fine conclusion to a good series.......2000-07-18
Wild Magic kept pace with the first two books in this trilogy, and kept my attention just as much. The personal trials that Calandryll, Bracht, Katya, and Cennaire go through flesh these characters out even more. The battle at the end of the book was good, and the conclusion was captifying as well. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a fantasy series.
Book Description.......1999-01-29
THE GODWARS. When the First Gods created all things, they brought forth two lesser gods, Tharn and Balatur, to walk upon the new world. But greed and power twisted their minds and turned their ambition into madness. And so the First Gods condemned them to eternal sleep in order to preserve creation. Now, the exiled prince Calandryll, the mercenary Bracht, and the warrior woman Katya pursue Rhythamun, a powerful wizard who would wake one of the mad gods and provoke apocalypse. He carries with him the Arcanum, an ancient book of power that--simply by virtue of having been discovered--already stirs the god from his slumber. But Calandryll and his companions are chased by another vengeful mage, whose dark magics have created Cennaire, an undead murderess, to thwart their efforts. And as they face the perils of civil war, magical assaults, and the ever-present threat of Cennaire's treachery to reach Rhythamun before he wakes the god, they live with the knowledge that the fate of the world rests solely in their hands.
A disappointing conclusion. . ........1997-06-20
Though the third book carries the same level of action that occupies the first two books of the series, it is completely ruined by it's unsatisfactory conclusion. The whole plot of all three novels is keeping the god Tharn from being awakened by destroying the book that tells how to wake him up. This never happens in the story. As soon as the book has been taken from the insane wizard who is trying to bring back Tharn, Wells simply concludes the novel with a quick "happily ever after" type ending that tells the reader nothing. The four main characters simply ride off into the sunset without actually completing the task they have been attempting to complete over the course of three novels. Wells simply implies that they will get around to it. I'm sorry, but I believe it to be a rip-off when an author simply dumps an ending like this. It's as if he doesn't care anymore

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good... Pretty good indeed..........2003-08-07
Over all I think it was pretty good. They kind of spent the whole book wasting they're time in some sort of spell but that's pretty easy to overlook since It makes a decent amount of sense. The only thing I was dissapointed with is while they where in the future I was hoping they would meet older versions of some of the X-men that didn't get stuck in the trap like Pyslocke or Havok or Longshot or someone. One thing that in my opinion could have made the book better is if Gambit was in it. I know this review isn't very informative but that's cause I'm tired and I don't want to give to much of this book away.
Overall it was a very good sequel, The stakes where definetely raised/

Being different made the differences........2007-08-24
I have read a number of reviews and some have focussed on what was said by Chef DL. All Chefs have different views and those of us wearing the white jacket should respect the views of our peers even though we may disagree with their individual opinion. Lets focus on the brillances of the book. The book is a tribute to the talent Ferran Adria has and his gift of sharing his ideas through his books. Unique and his ideas add a different perspective to cooking and presentation.Great to pick up and look at the result of a man who deared to be different and succeeded.
Review from a culinary school graduate/food consultant.......2006-11-01
I've met a lot of chefs who, like Chef DL, think way too highly of themselves to a point of being so close-minded that they can't broaden their talents and horizon. I'll also admit that I've yet to purchase El Bulli but from scanning through its glorious pages of pictures, the excitement I get from the inspiring work of art and genius of Chef Adria is overwhelming.
Chef DL's comments about how Chef Adria's cuisine "is different and wild and unlike anything you will see in the finest of restaurants" is a laugh! If he's right and the wildness of Chef Adria is that difficult to swallow, then we should all be happy with burgers and fries. . . and no one would try cuisines from other countries cos its toooo different and wild.
Besides, to be able to blend art and science and create something so tasty is pure genius! So many chefs and people in the food industry applaude his brilliance. . . can they ALL be wrong? For El Bulli to be the #1 destination for chefs around the world to visit during their very rare and short break tells you much about his fame and credibility. Makes me wonder where Chef DL works.
Master Werk.......2006-07-07
The book is great. Be prepared to spend the money and know it is not published in the Quenns English...or any English for that matter and you will still get your money's worth. If you are a chef, as am I, this book might bring some inspiration if you find yourself bored or looking to mix it up a bit. It reminds me of "On Food and Cooking" on extasy. As far as the guy below who calls himself a chef, please pay no heed to that review as he cleary speaks without regard of fact or any culinary experience. I am sure his hands are soft and he is most likely the owner or two scarless fore-arms. I live in Los Angeles where I own a restaurant and catering company by a different name and we are drowning in foam, emulsions and essences out here.
Adria is Real.......2006-06-16
Chef DL's review of Adria's cuisine is unfortunately all too familiar. It's sad that a lot of chefs from the 'old school' find molecular gastronomy to be a cold science far removed from the art of food. That opinion, however, is the equivalent of cavemen arguing that clarifying a stock to make consomme is not real food.
Chef DL... just look around at all of the chefs using foams and gelees around the world... sure, it isn't all done well, but at least most people aren't afraid or intimidated to try. It's only a matter of time before chefs everywhere start experimenting with spherification as well.
Zilla
lot of catching up to do.......2006-03-17
I agree with some of the chefs who are afraid we might forget about DINING... I have to confess I was thinking about 'soilent green' at some point. Anyway, browsing the book I realised that those chefs in this book were using the same tools I worked with in 1984 - 1985. Furthermore, after a week, I realised there was also a CD included with the receipes (none found in the book), so it seems I'll have a lot of catching up to do.

Customer Reviews:
The Future of Food.......2004-04-23
I thought I knew who the good and great chefs of the world were. I read an article about Ferran Adria in February and I thought to myself, "How did I miss this guy?"
The food is beautiful, unusual, curious, unique, and definately showing what food can be. I'm an aspiring chef, and I've never been more impressed with a book in all my life. I have 75 cookbooks, this is the one I would keep if I had to have only one. Forget Escoffier, forget Larousse, this is the direction I want to see food go. Foams, hot jellies, using gellied consumme as pasta dough, hot maynoaise, candied olive oil... the list goes on.
The recipies are not meant to be for the home cook, but anyone interested in new techniques, this book explains it all. Most of the food isn't very appealing for the Western pallate. This book, for me at least, is a wealth of information about cooking rather than recipie replication. He's very detailed in his explainations, and the book is organized very, very, very well.
Ferran Adria is more interested in making new things with foodstuffs than making a million dollars. I think Adria is the most creative and interesting chef working today, he's constantly creating new ways to eat food. Looking through this book is like having a glimpse into the future when it comes to cooking. Joel Robuchon says he's the best chef in the world. Paul Bocuse says he's the most exciting chef today. Those are some powerful words coming from some of the best chefs to have ever worn a toque. What's even more impressive is that they still say he's the best after he's claimed that the French are all washed up and don't know how to cook anymore.
Get this book, it's the start of something big.
