If them's his lordship's orders, mem, another voice answered, they'll have to be kep', I suppose. But, if you'll excuse the liberty, mem, as it's between ourselves, servant or no servant, all I have to say is, it's a cruel thing,--parting that poor, pretty, young widdered cre'tur' from her own flesh and blood, and him such a little beauty and a nobleman born.
Customer Reviews:
Cheap print job.......2007-07-09
This is an example of the difficulties of shopping online.
I had read the book several years ago and wanted to give a volume as a gift. This printing is unacceptable - unpleasant font, cramped pages and flimsy binding. You will do better with the purchase of a used hardcover volume
A Gentle Story.......2007-06-05
I have always loved "A Little Princess" and "The Secret Garden," but I had not even heard of this book until recently. It is the simple and gentle story of how a little boy's innocence and belief that everyone is good transforms his miserly and cruel grandfather into an admirable man. If you enjoy Burnett's other stories, this one is not to be missed.
Right up there with "A Little Princess" and "The Secret Garden".......2007-03-21
When I was little, two of my favorite books were A Little Princess and The Secret Garden (HarperClassics) by Frances Hodgson Burnett. When I grew up, they were still favorites. So a year ago when I was buying them for my little cousin, and I noticed "Little Lord Fauntleroy", I was astounded. How did I miss such a gem?
The story of little Cedric who warms his old grandfather's heart is beautifully written and quite touching. There is also a lesson to be learned, as we watch what Cedric does with his newfound wealth. What would you do if you were suddenly gifted with such a fortune? This story is perfect for anyone who enjoyed "A Little Princess" or "The Secret Garden"!
A Little Disappointment.......2006-05-19
I wanted this for a long time, and finally received it yesterday from my Amazon Wishlist.
This is the first audio book that I actually find difficult to listen to. The sound quality of this CD is so poor and scratchy that I could be listening to an old radio broadcast. I do not feel as if I am sitting in a room listening to a wonderful story unfold...it's more like I'm listening to a conversation on a cell phone. It actually hurts my ears to listen to this recording.
Every time the reader says any word with the letter "s" the hiss goes right to your brain. I'm not kidding. I still have a headache.
A boy who changed his grandfather.......2005-10-14
I got to know this book "Little Lord Fauntleroy" through the President of SGI, Daisaku Ikeda. This book tells us how a pure, innocent and kind-hearted boy, Ceddie, changed his ill-tempered grandfather. Little Ceddie's mother played a very important role in bringing up his son into such a good character, who always look at people's good points. This good quality of Little Ceddie is what a society need.

1930. The Woman and The Puppet begins: The Carnival in Spain does not end at 8 o'clock in the morning on Ash-Wednesday, as it does in other countries. The stern call of penance of the Church memento quia pulvis es (remember that thou art dust) does not influence the riotous gayety of Sevilla for more than four days, and on the first Sunday in Lent, the Carnival is revived with renewed vigor. Who is the rightful owner of the ancient bone flute?
Customer Reviews:
Review in CM . . . . Volume XI Number 4 . . . . Oct 15,2004.......2004-12-04
Twelve-year-old Camrose is a girl with a very difficult choice to make. When she receives a mysterious birthday present from her long-dead great-grandmother, her perfectly normal life takes an unusual turn. Camrose becomes a Keeper, entrusted with a bone flute which she must return to its rightful owner. The problem: she must first claim the flute from a burning ghost house. The second problem: the ancient instrument is the object of desire for two rivals, both of whom have the ability to weave in and out of modern time as easily as walking through doorways. One of them, the mysterious, charming Terence, appears in her life as a traveling cousin, while the second, the ragged, timeworn bard Diramid, plays his uillean pipes in Camrose's neighbourhood square. With Camrose's father away, her mother long dead, and a generally unsupportive older sister, Camrose feels rather alone in her situation. How does Camrose finally make her decision? The reader bites her nails right along with Camrose as the book speeds to its breathtaking conclusion, with more than a few obstacles along the way.
Patricia Bow has not only constructed an intricate, suspenseful plot, but a cast of likeable (and some not-so likeable) characters as well. Readers of all ages will easily relate to Camrose's inner struggle as Keeper of the precious flute - she is a normal girl attempting to figure out a decidedly not-so-normal situation. The ever-faithful albeit occasionally skeptical Mark offers support for Camrose throughout the novel; their dialogue is brisk and believable. Not-quite-human Miranda, Camrose's great-grandmother's one-time helper, appears to not only offer some sort of cryptic help but also a bit of comical strangeness. Terence, the lord of the Otherworld, is the perfect level of sinister - you can easily imagine his eyes twinkling with evil every time he appears.
Bow is no stranger to writing great fantasy, having written the equally superlative The Spiral Maze (Thistledown Press, 1997). The Bone Flute is her second novel published in English; her signature blend of supernatural fantasy thrillers have been extensively published in German. Rich with detail and allusions to Celtic myths, Bow's roots as a master storyteller shine through magically here. This talented author's second contribution to the English market is nothing short of a total success, and children's literature in Canada is all the better for it.
Poetic, gripping and masterfully written, Patricia Bow's The Bone Flute is fantasy at its finest.
Highly Recommended.

tight and emotionally-resonant.......2005-03-02
This is a challenging book, but well worth the journey it takes you on. The themes are confronting, but the prose is so engaging and polished that the novel really shines. The work is deeply-layered - using contemporary realism as well as fairy tale and mythic tropes to explore issues around familial violence - both physical and emotional.
A well-deserved award winner.
Beautiful.......2004-10-24
Bourke has created a beautiful work which, like the music throughout the book, flows beautiful through the characters experience, minds, personalities and lifes. It is a wonderful read to loose yourself in. An emotional rollercoaster and a must read for all lovers of Australian Literature.
surprised by beauty.......2002-12-12
I was given this book by a friend after it got shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers Prize in our region. I thought it was gong to be an entirely different reading experience. The blurb is ok - but it doesn't really give a strong idea of how beautiful the prose is. Or how well-drawn the characters are. The main character - Germaine - is a 16 year old girl who goes through some incredible traumas - the death of her mother, abuse by her father, etc. She's a very interesting young girl. Some of the most interesting and affecting writing in the book comes when she goes through pregnancy and motherhood of a young girl. These parts were accurate and moving as well as beautifully written. I think this book has some important things to say about living in Australia - both in urban and rural environments. About the seduction of violent men and the sometimes-brutal culture we live in, as well as the wilfull blindness of those who could help and the mentality of a 'victim'. Perhaps the most intriguing thing for me now is that I find it hard to think of Germaine as a victim, despite everything she emerges as an intelligent and interesting young woman surviving in extraordinary circumstances. The novel has a kind of mythic, fatalistic quality that is both appealing and appalling - in the sense that life often appals us with its traps and inevitabilities. Read it. You'll love her way with words - I can't wait for her next book!

Book Description
Indian in 6 dispels the myth that Indian cooking is complicated and time-consuming. With just 6 ingredients you can create tasty food in a matter of minutes.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2007-01-09
Recipes are easy to follow and just as easy to make. Gave it to my husband as a Christmas gift and he loved it, since he does most of the cooking anyway.
Indian in 6 gets a one from me. Here's why...........2006-07-24
I am not the most perfect person in the world but I believe in integrity. If you say that a book is whatever it is, that is what I expect and why I spent my money for it. This book is a dissappointment because the title is misleading...in fact, the whole premise of the book is untruthful. The book raves about the fact that it has no less than 100 recipes that have SIX ingredients or less. The truth is that the vast majority of recipes have 8 ingredients or MORE. I tried very hard to reconcile the title with what I was seeing. I thought to myself, "Well, it's an interesting book...a beautiful book...the recipes are nice..." I also tried to examine the recipes for some reason as to why most of the recipes were more than 6 ingredients. "Maybe she doesn't consider salt an ingredient....maybe she only means spices." No dice.
What I realized is that I'd purchased a book that was deceitfully misguiding me into believing that I would be able to produce Indian dishes in 6 ingredients or less than blatantly defied it's own premise.
As for the actual content, I think the book is nice enough although there are better books with better recipes, more variety of recipes and greater variety of options within each recipe catagory. I already several books on Indian cooking that far exceed the quality, both in design and content, of this book and there are others that I have not yet purchased but reviewed that are better still. Therefore, my only reason for buying it is the reason I will be returning it. I bought Indian in 6 because the book promised 100 or so recipes with 6 ingredients or less. To date, I have only found 5 recipes (although there may be more) that meet this claim and I feel betrayed. So back it goes. Very simply.
Nice book for the shelf.......2006-02-01
Ttile of the book is "Indian in 6-100 irrestible recipes that use 6 ingredients or less". Most recipes require more than 6 ingredients and for me living in the northeast -most of the unusual ingredients are impossible to find. Saw author on morning TV news show promoting book and she cooked a delciious vegitarian chickpea dish. I cannot find that recipe in the book. Aside-the book is beautiful and will look nice on my shelf. I will try the vegetarian lentil dishes-they look good.
