Book Description

During the last ten years of his life, Anton Chekhov penned his great plays, spent time treating the sick, and wrote a small number of stories that are considered his masterpieces. The eleven stories collected here-"The Lady with the Little Dog," "The House with the Mezzanine," "My Life," "Peasants," "A Visit to Friends," "Ionych," "About Love," "In the Ravine," "The Bishop," "The Bride," and "Disturbing the Balance"-hail from this fertile period. They reveal a writer who, in response to the techniques of Symbolism and Impressionism, moved beyond nineteenth-century realism to become an innovator of the modern short story, influencing such key twentieth-century literary figures as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner.

5 out of 5 stars A superb translation.......2005-04-01

These stories translated in this volume by Ronald Wilks are really superb. When one compares the translation of "The Lady with the Dog" with the earlier translation by Constance Garnett, the differences are apparent. Please compare them. The Wilks translation is high quality beautiful English expression, it captures the mood and the ideas of Chekhov perfectly.

                    Book Description

Mancdaman Zancharthus has become High priest of Tchernobog. Offended to the bone by devil worship(and fiscal insanity), he has embarked on a mad crusade to turn his own order inside out and reform the unreformable, Mother Khymir herself. Tchernobog, however, has other plans, and marshalls all his forces to maintain the status quo---wire-jacketted sendings, one-eyed cut-throats, poison-cult prostitutes, and last but not least, possessed harem piggies (it isn't as funny as it sounds). To even the odds, Zancharthus secretly schools his formidable consort Torrisanna in sorcery, and envisions an invincible bodyguard, the Cohort Ravener, commissioning his unwilling friend Jagutai to make it a reality. But Jagutai has to cope with a very significant distraction---that lewd little bundle called Lilitu, who has gotten herself into terrible trouble with Gudrid, Torrisanna's fanatical successor at the Temple of Tsa Terrathu-Even wilder than Blood+Pearls, seething with sex, blood and demonic barnyard dementia, Jagutai and Lilitu is a fever dream in print.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad..........2004-09-14

Mark E. Rogers, Jagutai and Lilitu (Infinitypublishing.com, 2001)

I knew it had to happen sometime-- Christian high-fantasy porn. And I dreaded that day. But that day is here, and I doubt it's going away any time soon. I wasn't really aware of it when I started Jagutai and Lilitu, but it (the high-fantasy porn bit, at least) became obvious quite early on. The Christian bit pops in later, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

Jagutai and Lilitu begins where the first book in the series, Blood and Pearls, left off. (Full disclosure: I haven't read Blood and Pearls.) Jagutai has fled Khymir, disgusted with the city. Zancharthus has overthrown the rule of the previous despot, Dessicatorius, and ascended to the position himself, while also priming himself to become the high priest of Tchernobog, the subject of one of the city's death cults. Zancharthus, however, doesn't believe Tchernobog exists, and intends to use his power to destroy the cult as part of his efforts to reform the city. Zancharthus sends, again, for Jagutai, who doesn't want to go back. The problem is, he's an ascetic who's fascinated with a temple prostitute, Lilitu, from a rival death cult, that of Tsa Terrathu. Tsa Terrathu's previous high priestess, Torisanna, has left the cult and is now Zancharthus' paramour/wife (depending on how you want to look at it).

And that's all in the first five pages.

After the first couple of chapters, I didn't want to like this book. Not because of the prurience, of which I am always a fan, but because the writing in the first pages is deadly dull. I understand the author has to catch things up for those already involved in the series and introduce all the (many, many) plot threads for those who are coming in fresh. But I decided before I threw it against a wall I'd give it until the promised Possessed Pig Harem mentioned on the back cover. (It's not as funny as it sounds, as the back cover also says.) When I got through that section, which contains a reference to events covered in Book Three of the series, and I found myself knowing I was going to read said Book Three, I knew I was in trouble.

(Now the Christian bit shows up, but I'll leave you to read for yourself. Let's just say the symbolism is not disguised in any way.)

Once the book takes off, it really does take off. It took me a full month to read this, and I finished the last two hundred pages in just over a week. (Yes, the first hundred are that bad.) The first bit reads like a bad Beeline porn novel with not as much sex; the last bit reads like what Moorcock's Gloriana might have, if Moorcock had been drunk, stoned on pain medication, and more of an immoral lecher while writing it. (Gloriana, for those of you who've not read it, is the high point of high-fantasy erotica. Go find a copy and read it. Now.) I think the transition is that it starts taking itself a bit more seriously as a novel, as opposed to a work of Christian high-fantasy porn, and so starts reading like a piece of fiction rather than a piece of genre fiction. Some of the characters are still two-dimensional, but some minor ones get fleshed out to the point where you start caring about them, and the whole Tchernobog thing starts becoming more of a compelling point.

That said, there are still some flaws in the latter part of the book. Most notably, Rogers introduces a whole new plotline about three-quarters of the way through with no indication it is in any way tied to anything that has come before (it is, but in the most tenuous of ways; you'll figure it out in the last few pages). Not necessarily an unforgivable sin when working in a series, but Rogers could take a tip from Moorcock, Robert Parker, or any of the other greats where series fiction is concerned on how to structure such things. (I'm assuming here that the events involved in the plotline will become important in the third book, Night of the Long Knives; depending on to whom you listen, NotLK is either the conclusion to the trilogy or the third in a five-book series. I'll report back after I read it. In any case, if said events don't end up playing a major role, I'm going to drop the rating on this one a star.)

Readable, once you get to the meat of the story, and ends up being quite fun. Just give yourself until the Possessed Pig Harem, and if you're still not convinced, feel free to throw it against the wall. ***

5 out of 5 stars The Rocket into the pit of hell continues where book 1 ended.......2003-06-20

If you have made it to this book then hopefully you have read Blood & Pearls which is the book before this one. This book continues right where that one left off. Our characters are all embroiled in the steaming cesspool that is Khymir. Mark E. Rogers portrays and evil society better than anyone I have ever read. His evil society and the people in it and the depraved things they do make the evil people in contemporary fantasy look tame in comparison. Mr. Rogers will shock you with his style of Dark Fantasy which melds Fantasy, Horror, and Erotica all into a hot and steaming series of books. This book is fantastic and will be difficult to put down without reading it from cover to cover in a single sitting.

So, if you have read Blood & Pearls then you definately want to read this. The story is not finished. You still MUST read the rest of the story. The evil of Khymir still has mysteries which you have yet to have heard.

This book as with the others is intended for mature audiences only. I would rate it an NC-17 rating in terms of who should read it. Aside from that word of caution it is a great read!

5 out of 5 stars Fast Paced and Engaging.......2002-07-27

Tons of sex and violence, wit, very well fleshed out characters, and a completely engaging story, this is my personal favorite of the Zancharthus trilogy. The scene at Froct's mansion alone is worth the price of the book!

5 out of 5 stars Mark Does It Again!!!.......2001-11-04

Yippee!!! Mark does it again. J&L is another triumph for Mr. Rogers(Hehehe). It continues the story line of Mancdaman Zancharthus, High Priest of Terchnobog, that was started in Blood+Pearls. Full of sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll (okay, substitute magic for rnr). Any free spirit will love this book. It could, in fact, concevebly change you political views

5 out of 5 stars A must read ..., but not for the kiddies.......2001-06-28

The author hits the mark again in this second book of the Pre-Zorachus trilogy. This book focuses on Jagutai and Lilitu, and how Jagutai is sent back to Khymir by his father, the great Khan.

Mark Rogers takes on "forbidden" themes with such gusto, that the reader cannot help being swept along with the prose. My one caveat is that this is not for the under 18 crowd.

I especially enjoyed the author's explanations for how magic works in his world.

It was a striking blow for women's equality when the pregnant woman in labor protects her husband, defeats the maurauding demons, and delivers a happy, bouncing baby boy.

Vagabond is an excellent read! Great detailed artwork with an excellent storyline to draw you in each volumes to keep you going. A page turner!

If you like samurai stories, this is one of the best along with Blade of the Immortal. I think the drawings are done beautifully in Vagabond. Backgrounds and people. Amazing. It's like admiring art in these books.

You will not be disappointed in any of the volumes in Vagabond!

I am a huge manga buyer and only read them once then I sell them because I do not re-read books. But Vagabond is the one set I will keep indefinitely! That tells you alot!

                    4 out of 5 stars A manga for a legend.......2007-01-04

Takehiko Inoue continues on the same high level with this episode of the life of Musashi. Althoug it tends to be a little to long to tell the life of one of his main contenders(7 volumes). For as much interesting as Sasaki Kojiro's life could be, this is a story about Musashi. That's why I'm not giving a five star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than the First.......2006-09-23

Vagabond is about the journey of Takezo, a young man, future master swordsman, who is in search of purpose and meaning to his life. In the first book he thinks its to become the best swordsman by challenging and defeating the best in the world. Having experienced disillusionment about people, he meets a monk (You'll love this guy) who strives to teach Takezo the value of a person, beginning with the youth. Book 2 gives us more of Takezo's background as he desends into a bestial killing machine. Can the monk help Takezo save himself? No alone.

If you like Manga that does not romanticizes war or swordsman, Vagabond should peak your interest. The storytelling is excellent in the drawings, more so than the text. I would rank such adept skill in the same arena as Lone Wolf and Cub. LWC is the standard for balancing poetic story telling and showing the hardcore grit of life as a swordsman. The Vagabond sereis starts with a youth, a teen, not a man with a child. So Takezo maturity is not yet there. What drives him to succeed and overcome his past makes this series promising. The characters show a range of emotions in this manga, and the situations they deal with does an excellent job of targeting a mature audience. Takezo struggle for "his" truth becomes ours to learn from his journey about becoming complete.

Read each book like a wine, one delicious sip at a time, enjoy the flavors.

                    5 out of 5 stars A manga reader.......2003-03-21

Vagabond is one of the few stories I have read that make me sweat with anticipation before flipping to the next page. The action becomes so intense you will feel bad you're flipping through the pages and missing the superb artwork in you're haste to discover the outcome of the last few pages. Overall the action is some of the best I have seen in the manga format.

A powerful story of one man's quest to become "invincible under the sun", Miyamoto Musashi drifts through the world questioning his one principle: his strength. A raging beast in battle, Musashi, only knows what it is to fight but gradually learns of the world beyond strength, blood and death throughout the course of his duels. Some fights take up entire volumes but they are well worth it.

The one negative aspect of Vagabond would have to be that not all the volumes are translated yet, and the reader might have to wait for the next volume to come out. Maybe the age-old story of "the quest" might seem cliché to some readers but if you can stomach it, Vagabond does its take on Musashi's journey in swordsmanship incredibly well.

I am not a Samurai buff, or even a big action fan but Vagabond's has me sold. I have read most (no lie) of the English translated manga you can find in America and easily place Vagabond right up there with Nausicaa, Maison Ikkou, GTO, Akira and Ghost in the Shell. I believe that all types of comic readers can appreciate Vagabond although shojo manga (girls comics) readers might be a little put off by all the blood and death.

                    A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Follows the book! OUTSTANDING!!!.......2002-08-14

I just found out about these titles, bought and read them before I could throw out the box they came in. Being a martial artist and student of Iaido (Japanese sword drawing), I am very Familiar with the Musashi story. Yet these books (vol I & II ) are told from a fresh perspective that keeps you tuned in. I can't wait for the rest of the series to follow.
The artwork alone makes these books worth buying.

Also worth a look are the Lone Wolf and Cub Series...

5 out of 5 stars Bringing back supper.......2007-04-10

This book is Vollstedt's effort to bring back the tradition of lighter suppers in the evening following the heavier dinner earlier in the day. This is how my mother-in-law cooks during holidays and I like this approach because you don't have a heavy feeling late in the day.

The recipes are easy to understand and follow and not intimidating at all, she took the term easy seriously when putting this book together. Easy does not mean boring or monotonous her recipes cover a wide variety of foods including soups, salads, sandwiches meat, poultry, eggs seafood and fish, pasta, vegetables, pizza stir-fries, grilling and desserts. Two categories salads, and pasta grains and legumes have both a chapter for main dishes and one for side dishes.

Although the focus is easy recipes there is a wide variety to choose from and it would be hard to pick up this cookbook and walk away without some ideas for a good and tasty supper.

This is an excellent book full of simple yet delicious recipes. My mom has other cookbooks by the author and really enjoyed them. Then she stumbled across this one and after I flipped through it, I picked up one for myself. There recipes are very basic and easy to follow and call for normal ingredients. Nothing exotic or specialized. Even my meat and potatoes husband enjoys what I have cooked out of this book.
