Book Description
"One of the sassiest, most appealing of the recent spate of female gunshoes . . . 'G' is for glorious, galloping read, and I can't wait for 'H' ."
--Louise Bernikow, Cosmopolitan
Good and bad things seem to be coming in threes for Kinsey Millhone: on her thirty-third birthday she moves back into her renovated apartment, gets hired to find an elderly lady supposedly living in the Mojave Desert by herself, and makes the top of ex-con Tyrone Patty's hit list. It's the last that convinces Kinsey even she can't handle whoever's been hired to whack her, and she gets herself a bodyguard: Robert Dietz, a Porsche-driving P.I. who takes guarding Kinsey's body very seriously. With Dietz watching her for the merest sign of her usual recklessness, Kinsey plunges into her case. And before it's over, she'll unearth the gruesome truth about a long-buried betrayal and, in the process, come fact-to-face with her own mortality. . . .
"Wit is the most versatile weapon in Sue Grafton's well-stocked arsenal, and she uses it with disarming precision. . . . Grafton excels in this milieu."
--Newsweek
"The story is complex; the body-count high; the sexual encounters feverish; and the villains chilling--in another can't-put-it-down outing for this talented author."
--Kirkus Reviews

Sue Grafton Fan.......2007-07-14
I haven't read this book in at least 6 yrs...but I still remember parts of that were sooo funny that everytime I see G is for Gumshoe...I start laughing! The part that still resonates in my mind...is of her in the motel room with her bra (stuffed with her socks) over her ears!! It was, for me, one of her best!!
Good, except for a continuing problem with this series.......2007-03-03
This "review" is not intended to provide the reader with any particularly "helpful" information about "G is for Gumshoe". This has been adequately accomplished by the preceding reviewers, with which I generally agree. However, if I were to add something, it would be how puzzling I find it that only one or two of those reviewers seem to be bothered by the fact that Kinsey permitted her opponent to outwit her and to get the better of her time after time. And Kinsey and her bodyguard were both so inept at the end of the book that it ruined the entire story for me. Obviously, others do not see it that way and are less demanding than I of my heroines and heroes.
The Kinsey Millhone series is, in general, well-written and always good for a few hours of entertainment. I have read most of them, through "S is for Silence." As others have pointed out, the endings in these books are sometimes a little abrupt and occasionally less than satisfying, but that is true of many books.
What bothers me much more about the Kinsey Millhone character is that, while she is presented as a strong, intelligent and independent "with-it" woman, she keeps screwing up when it really counts - like when her life is in danger! In this particular story, I lost track of how many times Kinsey should have (or at least easily could have) been killed. Worse yet, as the story gets going, she enlists the aid of a supposedly super expert in protection and personal security. Nevertheless, he turns out to be of no help whatsoever when the chips are down. They are both repeatedly outwitted by "the hit man," and all of the "good guys" are saved in the end only by the intervention of a third-party.
Oh sure, Kinsey somehow always survives in the end, but in real life if she made as many mistakes as she makes in these stories, she would have been buried long ago - with only Henry to grieve her death, since she seems incapable of a long-term relationship. (These two problems cause me to hesitate about setting these books aside for my daughters to read when they are older.) I have the same problem with the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich. I find that Dana Stabenow does a much better job of having her Kate Shugak character act "in character" throughout the entire story.
G is also for great.......2007-03-03
I believe the sixth book in the series is the eighth I've read. I have nine more unread on my shelf. This is slightly weaker than its predecessors. If, as I suspect, this is as weak as her writing gets, I'm mighty impressed. It's a fine book, covering some ground I've tried and failed to write about myself, within the confines of a workable mystery and the quirky wit we know Grafton for. I'm jealous, okay?
G is for Gumshoe by Sue Grafton.......2006-12-06
I loved it. I'm now officially hooked on the Grafton series!!
G is for Gumshoe.......2005-08-14
Excellent story line whole series is very well written only flaw in the this book and the others in the series is that the endings are pretty abrupt leaving some issues up in the air

I got stuck with "Gumshoe".......2007-10-11
"G is for Gumshoe" was my first Kinsey Millhone novel. I will tell you that I went back and read everything leading up to "G" before "H" came out. I have been an avid Sue Grafton fan since the beginning. She makes Kinsey so fun and fallible. You just have to love her and her stories. I especially love Henry.
Gotta Read!!.......2007-07-07
I love all the alphabet books, but even better was having three in one!
I am currently reading K is for Killer, each one gets better and better!
Wonderful, I love Kinsey.......2007-06-14
I have read almost all of Grafton's books, I still have a few that I have missed, she is ingenious, every single novel is original. The reading is easy, I can devour a book in one to two days, and then I am looking around for another. I have just finished J,K,L,M, am working on N, and am now looking for the ones in between that I have missed.

I loved them all.......2007-06-03
I've read the whole series and can't wait for the next one to come out.
"G" is for Gumshoe.......2007-05-14
This novel by Sue Grafton is very light hearted and fun to read. Reading a novel about Kinsey Millhone is addictive! I can't put it down.

Book Description
Here together for the first time on CD, Santa Teresa P.I. Kinsey Millhone is still on the case…
"G" Is for Gumshoe
Kinsey Millhone’s thirty-third birthday brings about final renovations to her apartment, a new case, and the top slot on Tyrone Patty’s hit list. Obviously, it would turn out to be a birthday to remember.
"H" Is for Homicide
To the cops, the death of claims adjuster Parnell Perkins looked like a robbery gone sour; to Kinsey Millhone, it looks strangely suspicious. As the evidence leads Kinsey to insurance scammer Bibianna Diaz, she must race to get to her before Bibianna’s spurned and violent suitor Raymond Maldonado does.
"I" Is for Innocent
Kenneth Voight thought that justice had not been served when David Barney was acquitted in the shooting death of Voight’s ex-wife, Isabelle. Five years later, Voight is the plaintiff in a civil suit in which Barney stands accused of Isabelle’s wrongful death. When Voight hires Kinsey to gather the necessary damning evidence, a simple civil case becomes a deadly hunt for someone who once got away with murder–and may again.

For those with long drives to and from work.......2007-05-15
I drive 35-45 minutes each way to work. The news is too depressing. I found these mysteries to be an enjoyable diversion. Not too deep, but good mysteries. Following a single character through three mysteries makes her a friend on my otherwise lonely drives. I have now gone through 9 such mysteries. Enjoy!

And the Heroine waddles forth across the land.........2007-01-08
Yes, this is a fantasy story. It is a very excellent fantasy story. It has magic and betrayal and family turmoil. Oh, did I mention that the heroine is pregnant almost the entire book and basically marches (waddles) across the land to save her country ( between bathroom breaks )and clear the name of her babies father whom she doesn't get along with. This story is not like any other and was a shear delight to read. There are some great reminders in this book why it is not wise to mess with a mother-to-be especially when she's in labor.
A bit bleak, but over all it was some fun (3.5 Stars).......2006-11-06
"Sing the Four Quarters" is pretty interesting as fantasy novels go. I don't means in terms of plot, because basically it concerns a cross country trek and several anti-climatic battle scenes, but because of the world it is set in. It's a fairly standard medieval world with several changes. One is that there are these little elemental spirits called the kigh can talk to certain people, who are the countries bards (the spirits respond to music.) The other, is that although some of the country is essentially terrified of these mostly invisible spirits and deem them to be religiously evil, the sexual morals of the world are completely up in the air. I happened to think this was an interesting contrast.
Other than that, this is about a cross country trek, a plot to tack over a country, some religious bigots, a bard who happens to be the disowned kings sister who got pregnant by the traitor in question (though he was apparently impossibly framed) even though she is a lesbian. Entertaining stuff, a bit bleak in writing style, but worth reading. I found it a bit slow in some parts, but essentially it ranks 3.5 stars. There are other books that take place in this world, but I think this can stand alone as a novel. I have to say though, I don't know now if I'm intrested in reading anything else by this author. I just wasn't that pulled in.
Light entertainment.......2006-08-17
This a readable fantasy novel, but one which is lacking in any complex human emotions. The main conflict of the story is quickly resolved, with little resistance on either side, and turns out anyway to have been little more than a misunderstanding. The protagonist's two lovers feel no jealousy of each other, and she seems to feel no particular passion for either of them (despite the rather juvenile banter between herself and the father of her child), nor any conflict about her relationships with them. Two of the major villains swiftly and conveniently dispatch themselves from the scene and the third is compassionately but unconvincingly rehabilitated, while the minor villains retreat to the background. The warriors have a very PC distaste for violence, and the only evidence of any prejudice throughout the book takes the form of superstition towards supernatural forces. An entertaining read, but not one that resonates with any greater meaning.
Tanya Huff's Sing the Four Quarters.......2006-01-29
The book is like new from the publisher. I read it in like 2 days. It completes my collection of this series. Thanks.
This one's a keeper!.......2005-04-21
Annice was born knowing that she was meant to be something other than the Queen her family was raising her to be. When her father lay on his deathbed she asked for only one boon, and that was to be allowed to train and study with the bards. From this point on her life was lived divided from all that she had grown up with. Her family disowned her, and her brother put her under penalty of death if she ever bore a child.
Annice has not only the power to call the kigh, ethereal spirits only visible to bards, but the power to call all four quarters of them: fire, earth, wind, and water. Though she is strongest in wind those kigh begin to shun and avoid her, and soon enough the cause of this odd behavior becomes apparent...she's with child.
Not only does this child's birth spell out treason, but after a nasty turn of events the child's father is falsely brought up on charges of treason himself. Oh, what will they do? *g*
While the tale of a princess turned commoner is, well, common, Tanya Huff has no problem weaving an engaging and suspenseful story within it's layers. Annice is the type of person I think everyone dreams to be. She's headstrong and has enough courage to do what she believes is right. And being a pregnant heroine can't be an easy job to tackle.
Once again Huff earns my respect for creating a world in which gender doesn't matter. She seamlessly integrates women into the military and men into the kitchens. Never once does a character seem out of place, though I did have to pick my own brain a few times when a character she was describing turned out to be a gender opposite from what I was picturing. In this book love has no gender definition, and she doesn't try to explain why she simply tells a story. It's truly beautiful.
I absolutely adore each character in this book, and that connection heightens my fear when they're in danger and my joy when they've succeeded. The kigh are an interesting take on what other fantasy books have always called faerie or even simply magic. I love the way the kigh intereact with the bards that call them. The whole magic/kigh system is very intricate and easy to get lost in at first, but immersion is the best way to learn about something.

Pick It up Used.......2004-01-05
This is a pretty good anthology. Highlights include: Card's "Ender's Game" (short story), Saberhagen's "Wing's Out of Shadow" and Anvil's "The Claw and the Clock." I bought it for the Haldeman, and while his story wasn't the best it the book, it was still good. I got mine at a used book store for $1.87. Bargain at this price. I highly recommend it as long as you don't have to pay more than $3.50.

An amazing cookbook that travels to the furthest reaches of the world to celebrate flatbreads with over the recipes for a myriad of breads, including Afghani naan, Mexican tortilla, French fougasse, Middle Eastern pita, and Armenian lavash. Hungry for something to go with all that bread? The authors include another 150 recipes for traditional accompaniments. How about a Scandinavian smorgasbord, tomatillo salsa with arbol chiles, Nepali green chile chutney, Ethiopian beef tartar, or Yemeni stew?
Book Description
"Two people caught in the grip of wanderlust," as Alford and Duguid describe themselves, this American- Canadian pair has traveled for nearly two decades, singly and together, throughout Asia, Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, and North America. As they have pursued their passions for travel photography and culinary research, they have found around the world a shared and nourishing element of culture and cuisine: flatbreads, the simplest, oldest, and most marvelously varied form of bread known to humankind. Immersing themselves in local cultures-from the Malaysian island of Penang and the high Himalayan passes of Tibet to the market stalls of Provence and the pueblos of New Mexico -- Adford and Duguid have studied bread baking and cooking with local bakers, in family kitchens, with street vendors, and at neighborhood restaurants and cafes.
In Flatbreads and Flavors they share more than sixty recipes for flatbreads of every origin and description: tortillas from Mexico, pita from the Middle East, naan from Afghanistan, chapatti from India, pizza from Italy, and French fougasse. As well within the eight regional chapters of the book, they provide 150 exuberant recipes for traditional accompaniments to the breads. These include chutneys and curries, salsas and stews, rich samplings of the Mediterranean mezze table and the Scandinavian smorgasbord, and such delectable pairings as Chinese Spicy Cumin Kebabs wrapped in Uighur nan or Lentils with Garlic, Onion, and Tomato spooned onto chapatti.
Oven-baked, grilled, fried, skillet-baked, steamed, or even baked beneath the desert sand, flatbreads are a fascinating, satisfying, and simple form that brings wholesome grains into our diet. They can be made from every grain imaginable: wheat, rye, corn, oats, millet, sorghum, teff, rice, buckwheat. They can be unleavened or leavened. They can be made so thin that they become transparent, or they can be two inches thick and sliceable.
But Flatbreads and Flavors is not only a book about the original life-sustaining food served around the world since time began, it is also a book about people and places, with vivid images and shared experiences captured in brief prose essays and in Alford and Duguid's own acclaimed photographs. Redolent with the tastes and aromas of the world's hearths, it maps a course through cultures old and intriguing. With clear and patient recipes and special sections defining techniques, ingredients, and equipment, Flatbreads and Flavors makes accessible to the novice and experienced baker alike the simple and satisfying bread baker's art.
Flatbreads and Flavors has 8 maps and 16 pages of full-color photographs of breads and their accompaniments. It is a Main Selection of HomeStyle Books a division of Book-of-the-Month Club.

Yummy.......2007-09-30
If you are into cooking some different food than American and want those delicious pita breads or even kebabs, then definitley get the book.
A Baking Travelogue.......2007-05-09
Alford and Duguid have done it again; created a cooking adventure in a book. Flatbreads and Flavors is a fine choice for the adventurous cook as well as the real, or armchair, traveler. The recipes are accurate and reasonably reliable, a helpful ingredient glossary is available to assist the cook new to foreign ingredients, and the way that the authors have been able to insinuate themselves so gracefully into the lives of nomads and others, make the cultures come alive. I have made a mezze dinner for friends using a selection of their recipes (they even provide menu suggestions) to rave reviews. A great read.
Flatbreads and Flavors.......2007-01-19
I like to make flatbreads with my flatbread/tortilla griddle. This book sounded good to me because of the recipes not only for the flatbreads, but foods that accompany them. Of added interest is where the recipes originated from, and accompanying stories.
Good introduction to simple breads and accompaniments.......2006-06-15
Flatbreads & Flavors is an intriguing culinary travelogue of Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, South America with a little Europe and North America thrown in. The bread recipes though are quite American because of the measurements in cups and the commercial dry yeast. I don't believe that folks in the hinterlands are shopping at American grocery stores. More information on natural leavening and native approaches to measuring ingredients would be of more interest. The accompanying dishes are more credibly presented.
Superb Treatment of a Broad Culinary Topic. Buy It!.......2006-04-02
`Flatbreads & flavors, A Baker's Atlas' is Canadian culinary photographer / writers' pair Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid's second book, which is easily more useful to the average foodie and reader than their last two expensive culinary travelogues, `Mangoes & Curry Leaves' and `Hot Sour Salty Sweet'. While this book covers a broad geographical range, like the `big' books, it maintains its high level of quality and focus by concentrating exclusively on the subject of flatbreads and dishes that are most commonly served with these flatbreads in their `natural habitat'.
While Alford and Duguid seem to have inherited the style of the great culinary travelogue, `Honey from a Weed' by Patience Gray, they have their own twists on this style which makes it all their own. One difference is that while Gray does a fair amount of reflection on the whys of local techniques, her observations are not systematic. They are more in the line of archeological observations. Since Alford and Duguid in this book, are dealing with the single technique of baking flatbreads, this focus give them the opportunity to give us an excellent tutorial on bread baking technique, including the use of modern appliances in the making of traditional flatbread recipes.
The authors take their `Atlas' approach seriously, as each chapter addresses a particular geographical region and opens with a map locating the center of traditional production for each type of bread. The eight regions are:
Central Asia, primarily Iran, the `...stans', and Tibet with lots of yoghurt and kebabs.
China, Vietnam, and Malaysia with dipping sauces, pancakes, and roll-ups.
India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka with chutneys, curries, and lentils galore.
Eastern Mediterranean, or `flatbread central' with pitas, matzos, Bulgar wheat, and dips and wraps.
Morocco, Tunisia, and Ethiopia, with mostly accompanying dishes.
Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, the home of Lavosh
Europe, from Italian pizza to Scottish oatcakes
North America with tortillas, crackers, and salsas.
While this would seem to be a rich subject, the authors don't spend much time reflecting on why flatbreads are so important in some parts of the world and less important in others. In Asia, it seems that it is the only kind of bread they make, while in Europe, it's definitely a sidelight. I hypothesize that flatbreads are important where there fuel for ovens is scarce and the native peoples are or were at one time primarily nomadic.
It is just a bit surprising to see how many different bread recipes use yeast. One would think yeast requires a nearby brewing industry, but natural sourdough type yeast is free for the asking and a lot easier to manage on the road than chemical leaveners, when the nearest 7 - 11 is 7000 miles away. But, all the recipes have been modernized and none actually use natural sourdough yeasts. All yeast doughs are made with `active dry yeast', the kind you have to bloom in warm water, but which will keep for years in their little foil packets. The other side of the coin is that there are a fair number or yeastless recipes, especially India's skillet breads, where the leavening is the action of heat and water in the dough, very much like unleavened matzos, except that matzos is made in an oven. So, if you can't tolerate yeast and you are tired of buttermilk biscuits and Irish soda bread, this book may be a great ticket to enriching your range of tolerated breads.
One thing this book does not do is be a complete source on those flatbreads which are so dear to our French / Spanish / Italian backgrounds. If your primary interest is with Pizza, go to Peter Reinhart's `American Pie' or some other treatise on pizza by your favorite Italian cookbook author. If your primary interest is in tortillas, get Diana Kennedy's `From My Mexican Kitchen'. But, if you like these things and want to find the their flatbread cousins, this is your book.
This book is simply all around excellent, and certainly deserves its James Beard Cookbook award. It makes me wish Alford and Duguid would stick to their single subject surveys instead of boosting their photographs business with the richly pictured , `Mangoes & Curry Leaves' and `Hot Sour Salty Sweet'. Their other books on rice and home baking are similarly delightful and should be in every foodie's library.
