In this latest thriller from perennial bestselling author James Patterson, Washington cop Alex Cross gets involved in his partner's effort to save the life of an old Army buddy who's facing execution for a horrendous and inexplicable murder spree in North Carolina. The Army's evidence against Sergeant Ellis Cooper, a decorated Vietnam vet, is overwhelming, which isn't surprising since it's all been planted by a quartet of killers whose reason for framing the erstwhile hero isn't revealed until long after they are. The big secret is who set the murderers loose, and in true cliffhanger fashion, Patterson keeps it under wraps until the very end. Meanwhile, his usual blend of action, violence, fast pacing and uninspired-though-serviceable prose prevail, and will probably do so all the way to the top of the bestseller lists. --Jane Adams

2 out of 5 stars Thriller--not a mystery or detective novel.......2007-07-14

The mystery/detective novel was a rather pure form in its earlier days. The focus was not on the murder itself and the detailed agony of the victim. In fact, the crime was disposed of rather quickly. The story was how the detective, through investigation and logic, revealed the murderer. There was no sex, no outright violence and certainly no sadism.

Somewhere along the line the detective novel evolved into the "thriller," in which the theme ranged far and wide. In most novels by James Patterson there is a pervasive vein of sadism, as there is in "Four Blind Mice." Ex-rangers from the U.S. Army, men who had fought in Viet Nam, continue their killing for hire and for pleasure in America. The sadism is very detailed and has nothing to do with the plot itself. For example, there is a lengthy and gruesome description of how the rangers tortured and killed a woman suspected of being Viet Cong. Perhaps it is to show that the men were not nice fellows, but the fact that they murdered people at all should establish that.

The detectives who trail the killers are bedroom hoppers, narrated with rather specific detail. Again, the sex has nothing to do with the plot, with tracking down the killers. One has to suspect that the sex is to titilate the sort of reader who can be titilated or manipulated by this.

The actual plot is not of much interest, nor is how the criminals were caught. What sells the Patterson books is the violence, the sadism, the sex--and short chapters for those with short attention spans. And because of this, I suspect the Patterson books will not be long remembered. Readers still read Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Philo Vance, etc., and they will be doing so when the Cross books are in the dustbin.

Alex Cross the mystery solver. Great read. Fast moving and exciting. Never go wrong with James Patterson reading

4 out of 5 stars Good but not great: An audiobook review.......2007-05-04

After reading a few reviews, it sounds like the audio version actually helps the story a bit. The two narrators are both quite good, with the exception that some of the bad guys sound too much like one another.

I am glad to get back to the world of Alex Cross. I have read or heard 3 other Patterson books this year and have been sorely disappointed with two. I only liked one (Jester) and I was looking forward to getting back to comfortable ground with Alex Cross.

The strength of Patterson's Cross books is the realistic conversations - the rhythms, cadences, colloquialisms and vocabulary sound right. They sound so right that I am reminded of a personal story. Way back before Patterson's picture was plastered all over the back of every one of his books, I used to work in a used book store. The Alex Cross books started filtering in and Mrs. Rivers, the assistant manager and an elderly African-American woman (also an avid mystery/thriller reader) placed Patterson's books in the African-American authors section. She was shocked when a book came in with his face on the back. She commented that she never would have believed that a white man could have pulled that off so well. He still pulls it off.

However, the story flows in a herky-jerky manner. Sampson and Cross gleen clues from things that should not provide clues. For example, while in Raleigh, NC investigating an old ritualistic multiple murder, they hear that a single prostitute was killed. No details are provided of the prostitute's murder, but still they know it is connected. How?

Patterson is intent on moving the personal lives of Cross and Sampson forward. That is appropriate. At times, though, it felt as if that was the only part of the story he really put a lot of thought into. The rest seemed to be rather sloppily tossed in there - the connections were loose, characters are introduced than dropped.

So, my grade: B-

Good conversation. Like the characters. My suggestion: Slow down "James Patterson, Inc." and take the time to work out some of the kinks and make these books better.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but with some inconsistencies.......2007-04-07

I picked this up at an airport before an international flight. I've read a few Patterson books recently. This was not quite as good as some of the others. Part of the problem might have been me reading them out of chronological order (this is another Alex Cross book). I didn't really care for the ending. There also seemed to be some technical and story inconsistencies.

3 out of 5 stars Quantity has seriously eclipsed quality.......2007-01-23

While I have read numerous books by James Patterson, only a few have been part of his "Alex Cross" series. The Cross books have a mechanical, mass-produced feel to them. However, with Patterson churning out something like 5-6 books a year, that's hardly a surprise. I don't mind someone being prolific, but it's almost gotten to where he should open up a chain of drive-through windows and donate a portion of his profits to re-seeding forests. We're getting true pulp fiction of the distinctly hastily-written-and-not-well-researched variety. There isn't nearly the attention to detail in these novels as in, say, a Michael Connelly crime thriller. There were also way too many implausibilities in this book for me to take it very seriously - even as fanciful entertainment.

The "four blind mice" in this book are three Army Rangers who served together in Vietnam (and a fourth 'mouse' that is revealed at the end of the book). Upon their return, the 3 continue to kill for both profit - as contract hit men - and fun (they're deranged "good 'ol boys" who truly get their kicks from killing even when no money is involved). But the amount of killing they do - and their complete lack of caution to keep from being caught - simply defies reason. These guys would have been caught within a week by even the most dysfunctional police force in the country. And they're supposed to be "professionals"? Uh, right.

A few examples:

1. They abduct a prostitute, let her out in the woods, and then "hunt her down" for sport before killing her. Just as they are about to start their hunt after releasing her, a police cruiser stops to ask the 3 men what they are doing on the side of the road with their lights off. They give an answer that satisfies the cop and he drives off. There is NO WAY that when the prostitute's body was later found, the cop wouldn't have tied it to the 3 guys on the side of the road and launched a major manhunt.

2. Another cop later pulls them over and they shoot him. Then, one of them gets in the car and simply drives it into the bushes on the side of the road to hide it. No attempt to even wear gloves before touching the inside of the cop car or the steering wheel.

3. The men go to a house full of call-girls and kill everyone inside. Again, no attempt to conceal fingerprints on doorknobs, clothes, furniture, etc.

Professional killers are simply not this cavalier when it comes to covering their tracks. With such huge deficiencies in the details, it was awfully hard to take Mr. Patterson's fiction seriously in this book. It was like these characters had been on one continuous joy ride / killing spree for the last 20 years without getting caught. With guys this back-slapping careless? I'm sorry, it just ain't gonna happen.

To be honest, there wasn't much here in the way of either mystery or thrill. In fact, the only real mystery is where Cross's long-distance romance with Jamilla is going to eventually end up.

Will I continue to read books by this author? Yes, but I won't generally expect too much from them - especially the crime thrillers. I enjoyed his recent books more in the genre of Nicholas Sparks better. One was called "Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas" and the other "Sam's Letters to Jennifer." Because they didn't rely on much of anything requiring research or technical detail - just books about human relationships - they were far better and far more plausible reads.

Patterson has the imagination to tell some very good stories. The problem is usually in the execution, not the story itself. I'm afraid quantity is definitely eclipsing quality as he attempts to churn out a book every few months. I'm not sure what's driving him to produce books like a machine gun - he's certainly made his millions with so many bestsellers and several movies. In fact, his books have grossed over $1 billion - so you do the math. It's astronomical even if he gets only 10% of that. One would think that as he near retirement age and with all his success, he'd take the advice that Nana constantly gives to Alex Cross in this book: slow down, don't work so much, and don't be so driven. I'd certainly like him to slow down enough to write better books.

                    5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2005-10-10

As per usual, White Wolf keeps us intrigued with it's World of Darkness (even if they have discontinued this particular line). I especially enjoyed the mention of the Giovanni Bloodline, and what happened to the Cappadocians in the modern nights.

4 out of 5 stars Cappadocians are cool.......2001-06-22

I don't know if there is a revised book out yet, but I do know that the Cappadocians are back and mad. They are the Harbingers of Skulls, in the revised vamp paradigm. They always rocked and now they are even cooler. But I don't know if they have their old Necromancy powers or not. They use to be able to remove a vampire from torpor, an awsome feat for any vamp.

I think I'll wait for the revised but I wouldn't mind having this one either for historical information on them.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest clans.......2000-07-27

The Capps. have been long forgotten because of the Giovionni. This clan book gives a great insite into this lost clan. Their powers aren't described very well but thats because no one knows any of them to find out what thier powers are. This book was written as more of a information tool for the capps rather than as a source for their powers. If you want to find out about the downfall of the capps get the transylvania chronicles and go through that and you will find out what happened.

3 out of 5 stars One of several..........1999-12-21

Good for background info, like all the clanbooks. Don't feel like writing a huge review, the Cappadocians aren't exactly on the top of my list of favorite things to play.

                    3 out of 5 stars Ehh..I want more........1999-06-13

The writing and the stories of this book is great. But after reading everything it leaves you to wonder and want to know more of what happened to the Caps-. It needs to be more elaborate. Its a ok book to start a Cappadocian character.

After Assasmite i was really starting to get into this series and looking forward to understanding this clan before the Giovanni took over and whiped them out.(or not if you beleive the truth about the Harbinger of Skulls*shudder*) But i was very dissapointed with this novel. it started off very good, very much liked the main characters such as the oracle of the bones that we saw in book one and her Lamia bodyguard, quite an interesting bloodline too. And Markus's ghouls had some funny banter going back and forth between them but i have to say that the plot trugged along and then ended with not much to show for it other than introducing the next character for the next clanbook. I dont know how this series ends and i dont know if any of the plot developt in this book effects the plot as a whole or not but im now at book 8 and still there is nothing that has any bearing on the main plot to the series. I may be suprised by the end of the series but at the moment this book seems to go off on a sidetrack and has no revelence to book 5 6 7 and 8.

4 out of 5 stars Alive and Dead Again.......2005-03-04

It's a shame that Cappadocians disappeared as a clan. As they are pictured here they are pretty interesting dead folks. There are the run of the mill Cappadocians who are contemplative and given to prophecy, the Lamia - guardians and warrior maidens, Giovanni - necromancers and entrepreneurs, and even Lazerene apostates who are seeking the secrets of resurrection. From this motley crew, and a couple of Settites, Andrew Bates weaves another genuinely readable volume in the Dark Ages series.

The central characters are Markus Giovanni, whose thirst for artifact has given him a fragment of the Sargon Codex - the piece needed to enable the Lazerenes to translate the whole codex and acquire the powers of creation. Racing against time to stop him is the Cappadocian seeress Constancia, who has seen that if the Lazerenes gain the powers of the codex, all hope for Michael's dream of a culture of vampires will turn to dust.

The race is run from Constantinople to a hidden oasis in Egypt, with Constancia just missing Markus at every step of the way. Magic and battle each play a part, and there is far more action in this volume than I have seen in a World of Darkness book in a long time. This is really what I want to find when I read on of these volumes. I understand that the rich detail that bogs down some of the volumes serves to support gamers who are in need of good resources and information. But I'm mostly a reader, and I want a story that keeps all my attention and features my favorite creatures - vampires.

Bates does an excellent job with both the story and his characters, who are less theatrical vampires and more like blood-loving intelligent actors in a desperate play. And the addition of companions like Markus's ghouls Falsinore and Beltramose add wry opportunities for a few smiles even as the dark plot unfolds. This is a full fleshed adventure all on it's own, even though it is embedded in a series. Hopefully we will be treated to more such writing as this series begins to pick up speed and momentum.

5 out of 5 stars It's all about Cappadocian ..........2003-03-13

First of all, I am not a Clan fan; vampire politics just isn't my cup of tea. However, someone pressed me to give the Dark Ages series, particularly the Cappadocian novel, a try. I am familiar with this author's previous work and did enjoy his Year of the Scarab trilogy very much, so I gave the old fogey vampires a chance.

Anyone familiar with the World of Darkness knows how intricate and, well, downright dry vampire politics can be-the angling for a better position for one's clan, the kowtowing for fear of retribution, the lengthy verbal quests for information and/or favors, etc. Andrew Bates has a way of not wasting words, and the words he does end up using are carefully chosen; this clean and terse style brings fresh air to the musty wheelings and dealings of the undead. Bates draws a picture and adds shading, but doesn't beat you over the head with cloying details. The story he weaves involves several vampire characters (Markus Giovanni the scholar, the cryptic priestess Constancia, the mad Alexia) that are all out on parallel quests, which intersect at a single goal-possession of the Sargon Codex, a mysteriously divine artifact that may make or break the Dream that is the reign of vampires. One of the most attractive parts of this book is how that intersection of quests is handled ... without giving away any juicy bits, the climax is skillfully prolonged such that the conclusion is quite satisfying, a true page-turner, and at the end inspires natural feeling to the oft-repeated but never-tired question, "So what happens next?"

Like any skilled storyteller, Andrew Bates relies on sidekick characters to add intriguing texture to "Cappadocian." And what kick-(...) sidekicks they are! My favorite by far is the ghoul pair consisting of Beltramose and Falsinar, servants of Markus Giovanni. Their easy friendship and wisecracking dialogue kept me immersed until the end as much as the travels, battles, and the elusive Sargon Codex did.

"Cappadocian" is a great example of how simultaneously elegant and adventurous the combination of blood, madness and mysticism can be. Vampire stories are cool ...who knew?

                    2 out of 5 stars too confusing.......2003-01-28

This book started great like the first two of the series. However, midway through the book the plot just got horribly convoluted and made no sense whatsoever. Or maybe it wasn't the plot but the author's rather haphazard way of writing. It seems as though the author took his time the first third of the book, but the rest was just written with no thought as to explaining things so the reader could follow what was going on and why the characters were doing what they were doing. Very, very dissapointing, especially since the first two books were so good. Let's hope things pick up with book 4.

The crew of shipbred technicians sent to the planet Ireta were prepared for a routine mission to catalog flora and fauna and search for new energy sources. Kai and his beautiful coleader Varian, the best xenob-vet in the business, followed all the standard procedures, but the result of their investigations was totally unexpected.

When their rescue ship mysteriously disappears, they suddenly find themselves surrounded by giant swamp creatures, deadly predators, and terrifying dinosaurs. And a curious change begins to come over many of the crew members—a mutinous change that will lead all of them, in one way or another, into the primitive darkness of a future world that holds many mysteries yet to be revealed. . . .

So begins Anne McCaffrey’s exciting adventures Dinosaur Planet and Dinosaur Planet Survivors—together in one thrilling volume for the first time!

i thoroughly enjoyed the book. there were a few oh-hums but even they had important info to read. this is a good book to read for any dinosaur fan. got out a dinosaur dictionary to look up the animals that exist on the planet and even that was interesting to do. then in the second book is TOR a rock animal who flies, facinating and the nasty heavy-worlders from first book. you wonder if what the book tells you on how the dinosaurs got there could be true. read the book and enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars The Mystery of Ireta: Dinosaur Disappointment.......2006-01-24

Anne McCaffrey is one of my favorite authors, but even that can't change the fact that I was greatly disappointed by this book.
If you've read the 'Freedom' series, or any of the chronologically first 'Pern' series, then you've read 'Ireta.' It's another rehash of the same old storyline- Beautiful, physically perfect people trapped on an alien planet. How will they ever survive? Probably in the same way all the characters in her previous books survived.
I was able to predict the ending with 100% accuracy from the first ten pages of the book, and though the last few chapters did take a turn for the better, it hardly made the previous several hundred pages worth all the time I devoted to them.
One never really comes to care about the characters- They aren't presented in an endearing way, otherwise, Ireta would have been a much better book to read.

I am a fan of Anne McCaffrey, and I liked this book. But I am also a fan of dinosaur stories, and there were, again, not enough dinosaurs for me in this book. Understandable, given all the starship technology, aliens and such, but with a name like Dinosaur Planet Survivors, you'd expect more, well, dinosaurs. Again I doff my hat to Hopp's Dinosaur Wars and its sequel, Counterattack, as having better coverage of the big beasties. McCaffrey gets the nod for sheer imaginativeness.

2 out of 5 stars Not her best work.......2002-03-13

Like the Death of Sleep I do not think that this book is one of the better works of Anne McCaffrey. I had read almost all of her other books when I read this one, and I was very disappointed. It had a very hard time just finishing it. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is expecting something on par with Dragonriders of Pern Series or the Powers That Be Series...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, better than the first........2000-04-28

As far as sequels go, this has to be the best I've read. It is not McCaffrey's best work, but a real page turner nonetheless. Since the protagonasts wake up 40 years after the first book ended, the plot is fresh (not good guys against bad guys revisted as with many sequels). The descendants of the original bad guys may not be bad at all, and McCaffrey draws the point beautifully that "the sins of the father should not visited upon the son." In addition, McCaffrey masterfully links these books to her other series involving Sassinak! It was a great tie in and answered many questions with surprising insights. To often, authors stories take place "galaxies apart." It's nice to see an author bring separate stories/series together without writing a 15 book saga. I recommend all McCaffrey's books, particularly her non-fantasy works such as "The Lady."

"The Ireta Adventure" ("Dinosaur Planet" & "Dinosaur Planet Survivors") should be read with "The Planet Pirates" ("Sassinak", "The Death of Sleep" & "Generation Warriors"). "The Death of Sleep" is set before and somewhat during "Dinosaur Planet". "Sassinak" is set after these two and ends up overlapping "Dinosaur Planet Survivors". "Generation Warriors" is set right after "Sassinak" leaves off. If you want the whole story I suggest reading all five parts of the story.

My son was diagnosed last year through his elementary school with ADHD and they pushed medication however I was not about to go that route until I had dissolved every other possible alternative. I purchased the Feingold Diet cookbook and surprisingly the recipies are delicious! I was skeptical at first because my son is 6 years old and I was afraid he would put up an argument to eat these foods but to my surprise we all have liked the recipes we have tried. We have only been on the diet for about 4 weeks in which we have seen some changes in behavior (I think the first couple weeks he was rebelling about having to be on a "special diet" plus when he visits his dad everyother weekend, he has gotten food not approved on the diet which sets us back a couple days). Also to our surprise, my husband has experienced positive changes in his energy level and overall general health. You are what you eat!

In the late '70s, an earlier version of this book changed my two-year old daughters life forever. I believe that then the title phrase was "hypoactive" instead of "hyperactive". I had an adorable, sweet, little girl that would suddenly go into uncontrollable rages. A neighbor happened to be watching the Phil Donahue show and told me about the cookbook that was discussed on the show that day. I bought it on Tuesday and by Saturday I had a new child. I explained to her that certain things were poison to her and that sugar would make her have what we called a "sugar fit". She, at age 2 1/2, became a helper in the process and would refuse any candy, etc. that was offered to her. She's now age 30, and still is careful about intake, staying aware of how foods affect her. She has never, ever had another "sugar fit". I'm looking for the book again for my son's little boy - age 2 1/2 - who has the same symptoms.

I have followed this cookbooks recommendations since 1983. My son is ADHD and my husband always said if you can't read it don't eat it. It definitely made a differnce in my sons actions and he is now graduating from college and we all still eat much healthier than we would have. The recipes in this cookbook are delicious and I would like to give atleast two of these for Christmas presents and I need one l for myself since whoever borrowed it never returned it to me. They must of liked it too.

For parents of children who have been labled ODD, ADHD and other hyperactive and behaivor disorders, this book could change your lives. Dr. Fiendgold has come under critism for his ideas concerning the effect of cemicals in food and their effect on an individuals' nervious systems. When I decided to try Dr. Fiengold's diet I was desperite to help my ODD son and wanted to help him without putting him on drugs. Our whole family tried the diet for six weeks and the results were amazing! Our son is now 20 and a straight A student at the Univerisity of Wisconsin on a music scholarship! He still has to follow Dr. Feingold's guidelines for his diet, but he is a very delightful and productive young man today and has never been on drugs to control his behavior! Thank you DR. Fiengold! We love you!
