Book Description

This critically acclaimed, explosive thriller is a book only prosecutor Linda Fairstein could write. Patricia Cornwall knows the morgue; John Grisham knows the courtroom; but no one knows the inner workings of the D.A.'s office like Linda Fairstein, renowned for two decades as head of Manhattan Sex Crimes Unit. Now that world comes vividly to life in a brilliant debut novel of shocking realism, powerful insight, and searing suspense.

Alexandra Cooper, Manhattan's top sex crimes prosecutor, awakens one morning to shoking news: a tabloid headline announcing her own brutal murder. But the actual victim was Isabella Lascar, the Hollywood film star who sought refuge at Alex's Martha's Vineyard retreat. Was Isabella targeted by a stalker or -- mistaken for Alex -- was she in the wrong place at the wrong time? In an investigation that twists from the back alleys of lower Manhattan to the chic salons of the Upper East Side. Alex knows she'sin final jeopardy...and time is running out. She has to get into the killer's head before the killer gets to her.

2 out of 5 stars She got better after this one.......2006-12-31

Had this been the first Linda Fairstein book I'd read, I would never have read another. Only stubborn refusal to give in allowed me to finish "Final Jeopardy." I found myself getting frustrated that such interesting premises and plot twists could be written in such a lifeless way.

Also, having met the characters in another novel, I was surprised at how unlikeable they were in this one. The heroine behaves unprofessionally in her work life, and she is somehow both emotional and cold in her private life. It was difficult to sympathize with her. She didn't come across that way in the other book.

There were good things. The short side stories of other sex crimes were interesting, if a little distracting. The author also does a good job of explaining why someone would want to pursue this particular disturbing career. You want to like her.

Devoted Fairstein fans may like this book, but reading this one before the others may make it impossible to pick up the next one.

1 out of 5 stars I gave up..........2006-07-17

This is one of the few books in my life that I didn't finish. I read two Linda Fairstein books before and even though I find Alexandra Cooper to be one of the most unlikeable fictional main characters ever, the storylines were interesting enough.

In this book however, there were so many bits that spoilt the reading experience for me:

1. The characters
In all three books of the series that I read so far, Alexandra Cooper comes over as snooty and unlikeable. She has a privileged background, which is okay in itself, Elizabeth George managed to create a very likeable main character with a privileged background with Inspector Lynley. But Alexandra Coopers is in-your-face privileged. Constant mentioning of her Wellesley education, her house on Martha's Vinyard (here, it is essential to the story, I understand that, but it is mentioned in every book of the series that I read so far), her designer business clothes, her rich golden hair - it just gets to much. In addition she has a nasty way of bossing people around and telling them how to do their job (not just people working for her, but those in different jobs as well...) and generally carries an air of "I know best". - Her "sidekick" Chapman is one of the more likeable characters, but his "I'm so witty and love to tease others"-act sometimes gets out of hand. When 90 % of everything he says has that "witty-teasing" note, he really gets on my nerves.
Other characters get the stereotype treatment. Everybody who doesn't get along with Alexandra Coopers is bad and incompetent. The Vinyard people are all nice and simple, the secretary is fully dedicated, the press people are one-dimensional etc. etc.

2. The distracting information
Page-long biographies of everybody whose name is mentioned really went on my nerves. I understand that this is the first book of the series and that the main characters need to be introduced. However, I can't understand why a page-long biography of Alexandra Coopers parents is necessary at all. As far as I read, they never appeared in the story at all.

Alexandra Coopers has several cases to handle. That is natural and it's good to get a glimpse of them. However, we get more than a glimpse and as they interrupt the main story, after a while these extra cases are just annoying interruptions. They don't do anything for the story. They pop up, Alexandra Coopers does of course a marvellous job and outshines everyone else, then these cases are never mentioned again.

3. Partly bad prose
Parts of the book are just written badly. When Chapman and Alexandra Cooper fly to Martha's Vinyard, Alexandra tells Chapman a bit about the island - well, a several page bit. These pages sound as if the author copied them straight from a travel guide. There are far more elegant ways of connecting a location to a story. In addition, the "show don't tell" rule does not seem familiar to the author as many things are just written down instead of described.
Another annoying bit is that the characters address each other with different names all the times. First name, then last name, then nickname. For somebody not familiar with the characters, it's confusing. In general, it doesn't make any sense. Do you constantly change the names you address your friends/colleagues with? I don't and I don't know anybody that does (the occasional throwing in of a nickname excepted).

So, I fought my way through the first couple of hundred pages. But after a while, when one distraction after the other spoilt my reading pleasure, I noticed that I couldn't care less about who the murderer was. This book was a big disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Final Jeopardy.......2006-03-13

This was well read and an excellent story. Having read the book it was a bit disappointing to find so much missing in the abridged version but, for those who had not read the book, it really would not make much difference. The author's books are on my "must read" list.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut Novel!.......2005-06-20

Linda Fairstein's "Final Jeopardy" is the first installment in the Alexandra Cooper mystery series. Alex is the Assistant District Attorney for the Special Victims Squad in New York City. One of her friends, an actress named Isabella Lascar, is found murdered at Alex's summer home on Martha's Vineyard. Alex is devastated but the mystery is just beginning to unfold for Alex. Soon she will begin to wonder if her own boyfriend Jed was involved with the crime. Toss in a few wisecracking cops, cryptic messages and a couple looney stalkers and you've got Final Jeopardy.

I adore mystery novels. Mysteries, fantasies and chick lit are my reading stock. But because I read so quickly, I often run out of my favorite authors long before they publish another novel. Thanks to Amazon's recommendations section, I was suggested "Final Jeopardy" and I loved it. Fairstein is an excellent author. Alex Cooper is a completely likeable and well-developed character. The plot was intriguing and made for an all around great mystery.

2 out of 5 stars Boring disappointment.......2005-05-20

The two things I feel make a book the most interesting are the character personalities and how they interact with one another. For a mystery, you also add in how well the mystery is written.

The characters in this book have very little personality. I have read reviews where people say how much character development there is. Where? Stating facts about a person is not developing them. I know I would be bored to tears if I knew these people in real life. The main character herself is vain and not very likable.

The dialogue is very strained and unnatural. For one thing, why do they continually address each other by name every time they speak to each other? Nobody speaks that way. The dialogue is extremely narrative and tedious. This is a big reason why the characters come out so boring. I actually found myself saying, "Oh shut up for 30 seconds". This is the biggest problem with the book. If the interactions and conversations between the characters were even slightly natural, the entire story would have been better. Instead, the dialogue is simply mundane.

The only reason I gave this two stars is because the main character being part of the SVU is different. That brought something original to the story. The mystery itself is ok, not great but not as bad as some I have read.

There are many more interesting police procedural mysteries out there. Ones that have far more interesting characters.

From the supplier: The US Supreme Court overruled the double jeopardy case Grady v. Corbin in the companion cases of United States v. Dixon and Foster v. United States. Both Foster and Dixon were retried for criminal offenses after conviction on criminal contempt charges involving the same facts. Although the justices overruled Grady, they could not agree on whether a contempt conviction was the same as any other crime for purposes of double jeopardy or whether same offenses were determined by same conduct or same elements.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Quaint Ol' Occult Detective Goes Sharp-Edged.......2005-04-09

DEATH OF AN ADEPT is the fifth, the latest,(and thus far, the last) volume in THE ADEPT series. Hopefully, authors Kurtz and Turner Harris will reincarnate the series at some point in the future, as it is engaging and highly enjoyable. DEATH OF AN ADEPT, moreover, moves the series in new directions.

DEATH OF AN ADEPT finally sees Sir Adam Sinclair marry his lady love, Dr. Ximena Lockhart. The two settle into married domesticity at Strathmourne House where they are soon under attack by The Lodge of The Lynx, their nemesis throughout the series.

Several Adepts do die in the course of the story, and in some particularly unpleasant ways. It appears that Kurtz and Turner Harris have finally realized that mere self-centered selfishness such as we've seen before in the series does not equate with real evil, and have redrawn their bad guys, particularly Francis Raeburn, as corrupt and sociopathic---in a word, vile.

Peregrine Lovat and his wife Julia are almost overcome by an occult device known as a "Hand of Glory" made from the body parts of a gibbeted criminal. Sir Adam himself is captured by Raeburn and used as the sacrificial victim in a particularly detailed and gruesome Black Mass. Raeburn reanimates the spirit of the nefarious William de Soulis, a Scottish sorcerer of the 1700s who wreaks havoc in his new incarnation.

DEATH OF AN ADEPT is a tale noir far more than any of its predecessor novels. There are even a few four-letter words sprinkled into the dialogue, something that hasn't happened before in this series, which always had the quaint and proper air of the drawing room about it.

DEATH OF AN ADEPT is both a modern murder mystery and a gothic horror tale. Kurtz and Turner Harris do a fine job here. It's a shame they haven't continued the series as of yet, because here, embryonically, we have a syncretic "Profiler Meets Dracula" theme which opens up all kinds of fascinating possibilities for this already well-established series and its characters.

                  3 out of 5 stars Addictive fluff.......2002-01-10

The "Adept" series by Kurtz and Harris combines all the worst features of formula romance novels, Extruded Fantasy Product, and pseudohistorical conspiracy theories. The prose is tepid, the dialogue stilted, and the characters one-dimensional (at best). Plot complications are carefully piled up, only to be resolved miraculously at the last moment by a wave of the hand.

So why do I keep reading them, and checking to see if a new one is out? The same reason I eat Twinkies, I suppose -- they may be content-free fluff, but they're *definitive* content-free fluff. Sometimes it's fun to turn the brain off.

If you like romance novels, ritual magic, secret societies, and the city of Edinburgh, you might very well enjoy these books a lot. If you require plot, characterization, command of the language, or important themes from your reading, don't bother.

4 out of 5 stars An fine successor to Dion Fortune's "Dr. Taverner" stories.......1998-04-29

In every one of Ms. Kurtz's "Adept" books, there comes a moment of such overwhelming mythic beauty that I get watery-eyed, or cry. "The Death of An Adept" is no exception, and for me, it is when the young psychic artist Peregrine finally gains his wings as a magical adept in his own right. Every book in this series is a fine successor to the occult fiction of Dion Fortune, combining hermetic principles effectively with skillful and dramatic storytelling and a high moral sense. Here, as previously, we see that evil is its own punishment, and that a good heart, and one annealed by self-discipline and fine training, can overcome many (supernatural) obstacles.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Great Followup.......1997-11-28

I started reading the Adept because K. Kurtz wrote it and I liked her Deryni series. I had no idea how good it was. Since that first book, I have continued to read and be impressed. Death of an Adept keeps the standard of the Adept series has high as ever. It is a fitting end to the series of events that started in book 1. I loved it. I usually get bored with book series after awhile, but The Adept is proving to be the exception. I can't wait for the next book. Here's hoping that The Adept series continues to hit new heights.

3 out of 5 stars I wish I could rate it higher ..........1997-11-11

I was delighted when I saw a new book in the Adept series was out. I am one of the people who's hoped since the second book that Adam and Ximena would eventually marry. The relationship between the two of them is beautifully drawn.

Unfortunately, the rest of the book doesn't hold up. The mystic elements have gone from original and intriguing to repetitive and boring. If you've read the previous books, you can predict what mystic events will occur in this one.

I really wish I could give this book a higher rating. The series started out with so much potential. Hopefully, if further books in the Adept series come out, the authors will be able to break this tired formula.

                              Book Description

ohn M. Ford is an extraordinary talent, a writer who is as comfortable writing sonnet cycles as he is writing Star Trek novels. His novel The Dragon Waiting won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel. A few years later, he won another World Fantasy Award, for best short story-for the long poem 'Winter Solstice, Camelot Station.' That extraordinary work is included in this collection. Heat of Fusion and Other Stories contains some of Ford's best published work, including some pieces that have only been privately printed before. From the title story, 'Heat of Fusion,' to the devastating '110 Stories,' here are 21 forays into the powerful, funny, and always thought-provoking mind of John M. Ford.

                              5 out of 5 stars a diverse collection.......2004-04-23

Heat of Fusion and Other Stories contains a mostly even mix of poetry and prose which should dispel any notion that John M. Ford is a "mere" fantasy/SF writer. There's a verse story in which D'Artagnan and company meet another famous swordsman, a stage play about memory, a solid rendition of the visions-of-death story, and many others. Whether reworking myths or writing of a future, Ford often leaves details understated, so stories reward multiple readings. Although some of the poems didn't do much for me, likely due to my lack of affinity for the form, they all seem well constructed. This book backs up the publisher's promise of versatility and then some.

This is a good decorating book but not great. If you're an American ordering, be aware it is published in Great Britain and includes terms, cakes recipes, metric measuring system that can be hard to understand. The cakes are beautiful to look at in the pictures they include but not too easy to make. Some of the ingredients are hard to find here is the USA and the glossary of terms is more for European cooks. I love to browse the book but find my "Betty Crocker Cake Decorating Book" is more realistic to use.

This book has good information but when I read the title as "Beginner's" guide I thought I would get something that would allow me create decorated cakes with simple techniques. This book uses a lot of fondant and "european" style cakes. I was looking for a more informal type of instruction book. Overall, the book is O.K. but not what I expected.

I was pleasantly surprised to order what I thought was 1 book and receive a 6-pack of these 40-page booklets. These would make great gifts for friends interested in learning the basics. It covers baking, leveling, stacking, icing the cakes; preparing the cake board, making and coloring buttercream and royal icings, preparing bags, filling with icing; bag position; decorating with various tips (round, star, petal, leaf). Then it gives instructions for specific projects including a bear cake, fish cake, swirl-topped cake, lettering, cupcakes, clown cake, balloon cake, star cake, castle cake, flower/heart cake, baseball cake, big cookie.

This was my first time at cake decorating and I was determined that this summer would be the summer for this project. I searched for several books, but in the end the cheapest book I bought (this one) was the one that I turned to when I wasn't sure about the process. It also gave me the confidence to get creative.
