Book Description
“Brilliant plotting, relentless suspense,” raved the Washington Post. “A new synonym for terror,” crowned the Detroit Free Press. The critics agree: no one writes suspense like Karin Slaughter, whose thrillers featuring medical examiner Sara Linton and her ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, have propelled her to the top of bestseller lists the world over. Now Slaughter fuses her unmatched grasp of forensic science and a mastery of complex relationships in a riveting tale of faith, doubt, and murder.
The victim was buried alive in the Georgia woods–then killed in a horrifying fashion. When Sara Linton and Jeffrey Tolliver stumble upon the body, both become consumed with finding out who killed the pretty, impeccably dressed young woman. And for Sara and Jeffrey, a harrowing journey begins, one that will test their own turbulent relationship and draw dozens of lives into the case.
Lena Adams is one of them. A Grant County detective for years, she has her own reasons for being drawn to this case and a fierce drive to see justice done. For these three people, who have each seen the darkest side of human nature, the body of the murdered girl is but the first in a series of shocking and sordid revelations.
Now, as Jeffrey and Sara narrow the field of suspects, they must confront their own doubts and indiscretions, while Lena Adams sees herself reflected in the frightened eyes of a battered woman who may be the key figure in the case. As
Faithless builds to a stunning and unforgettable climax, Karin Slaughter masterfully brings together strands of interlocking lives, family secrets, and hidden passions with one astounding truth: the identity of a killer who is more evil and dangerous than anyone could have guessed.

Slaughter does it again........2007-09-27
This book is one of her best. Lots of plot twists and an ending that makes you anxious for her next book. I loved it!
Great characters, but the plot was done before.......2007-08-06
I've loved the Grant County series since the first book and will continue to read them until Karen Slaughter moves on to other things, but this was her weakest book. I say that because the whole "girl in a box" theme has been done before in many horror stories, and unfortunately, real life.
As for the religious colony, it was a little anti-climactic. It was a little too obvious (ex cons working on the farm as part of their work release programs, hypocritical fanatics, hidden secrets, etc.). The thoughts on religion expressed here were not new things to my well worn ears on the topic, I know where I stand on religious matters and not this book nor the behavior of others will sway me either way. If anything, it makes a great point of the hypocrisy of so called "religious people" who are doing their work on behalf of Christian causes. They are self serving who are hiding behind the institution of the church and the frock of God for their own cause, not out of true altruism.
Still, I love the characters and what things they will be involved in. Because there are, after all, monsters around every corner.
Disturbing religious views from the author.......2007-02-17
I have to start off by saying that I LOVE Karin Slaughter's Grant County series and haven't been able to put one down yet that I've started until I've finished the last page. They have been romantic, thought provoking, and suspenseful. However, I have found her comments on religion disturbing in the past and this book is the strongest yet on Slaughter's view that spirituality is for the weak, stupid, and perverted. As a Christian, I was offended. By the way, I don't belong to a cult, and I have yet to see a preacher or fellow Christian act as crazy and evil as the religious characters in Slaughter's books. This book is good, but I felt her obvious agenda against all those who believe in God disturbing. Don't know if I'll buy her next book....
great plot, greater characters.......2006-11-05
This is the first Slaughter that I have read, and at first I doubted whether another crime series with a female coroner as a leading lady - like Cornwell and Reichs - could offer anything new. But it does.... The crimes in this novel and the previous 4 in the series might be less complex than Cornwell and Reichs, but they fit the small town setting where normal people are victims of acts of violence that they didn't see coming and where 'the bad guy' is often someone closer to home than expected. What makes this and Slaughter's other books worth reading, are her very realistic descriptions of the experiences of the professional and personal lifes of her sympathetic leading characters.
Buried alive and left to die.......................2006-10-27
The title to this novel by Karin Slaughter, Faithless, actually applies to many of the story lines that run through it. The main characters, in an on-again, off-again relationship, are Sarah and Jeffrey. Do they have faith in their future together and can they overcome the obstacles placed in their path.
Lena, a young detective has many demons in her past, now she has one in her future. Does she have the strength and faith in herself to choose the future that will be best for her, leaving the dark things behind?
All these story lines circle the mystery of a murdered girl, buried alive and left to die. She comes from a fundamentalist family who runs a farm that takes in the troubled and homeless in order to give them a new start.
When another murdered girl turns up, everyone realizes that the death clock is ticking. While the characters have been developed through out a series of books, each story reveals more of them to us. While they all battle there own personal demons, they know that somewhere nearby, a young girl will be killed unless they can figure out who is behind these horrible murders.
Karin Slaughter crafts her novels well, just enough emotion to draw the characters close, enough horror to keep you on the razor's edge and the perfect touch of "reality" to keep you wondering. This combination of love, betrayal, fear and hope, trust and doubt all combine for another good Slaughter novel.

A wonderful collection of essays -- don't miss it!.......1999-06-10
I could not disagree more with the cynical, pseudo-intellectual author of the Kirkus Review of this wonderful book. OF COURSE Mr. De Vinck's essays do not "accurately" depict the harsher realities of childhood -- that is not his objective. The essays read more like fairy tales for adults, spun out of the simple stuff of everyday life -- the small, insignificant events that each of us, no matter how dreadful our childhoods were, still remember and from which we can gain strength and understanding as adults. This book will always have a prominent place on my bookshelf, and I find myself turning to it again and again, whenever I need to be reminded of the important things in life. I highly recommend it, as well as Mr. De Vinck's other books.

Penzler Pick, March 2001: I guess it's no secret that I regard Joyce Carol Oates as one of the great living American writers, both of mystery-crime-suspense fiction and of virtually every other form invented. I previously reviewed Blonde, which went on to be nominated for a National Book Award, and it's my joy to be able to recommend Faithless: Tales of Transgression, the stories within which are about as good as the short story gets. (Full disclosure here, with the admission that I might be a trifle prejudiced in favor of this volume. It is dedicated to Alice Turner, the former fiction editor of Playboy, and to me--largely, I reckon, because several of these stories were written especially for several anthologies of which I was the editor.)
There are 24 stories in this generous volume and while some inevitably linger longer in the memory than others, there is not a dull spot in its nearly 400 pages. The title story is a haunting tale of the disappearance of a woman as recalled by her two daughters, grown now. The ending is utterly expected but, nevertheless, comes as a shock. "The Vampire" is not at all a horror story, at least not in the sense that it involves in any way elements of the supernatural, but has a growing sense of pure terror as the reader comes to see the way in which one person can absorb all the life out of another.
In "The High School Sweetheart: A Mystery," a famous mystery writer reads a speech as he accepts the presidency of the most prestigious of all mystery organizations. The speech is delivered as a piece of fiction that appears to be a confession of a horrific crime committed during his teen years while besotted with a girl two years older than he. When the speech ends, the audience cannot imagine applauding because the story seems so true. Is it?
Once again, the incomparable Joyce Carol Oates has produced a compelling and important volume for the shelves of anyone who cares about distinguished suspense fiction. --Otto Penzler

"Special feature! This e-book edition contains ""Dark Work,"" our exclusive interview with Joyce Carol Oates. In this collection of twenty-one unforgettable stories, Joyce Carol Oates explores the mysterious private lives of men and women with vivid, unsparing precision and sympathy. By turns interlocutor and interpreter, magician and realist, she dissects the psyches of ordinary people and their potential for good and evil with chilling understatement and lasting power. In ""Faithless,"" two adult sisters recall their mother's disappearance when they were children. In ""Ugly,"" a bitterly angry young woman defines herself as ugly as a way of making herself invulnerable to hurt and in so doing hurts others. In ""Lover,"" a beautiful young woman locked into an obsessive love affair seeks her revenge in a bizarre, violent manner. In ""Gunlove,"" a woman in thrall to a powerful erotic fetishism recounts in brief, deadpan vignettes a history of her relations with firearms. Intense and provocative, Faithless is a startling look into the heart of contemporary America from the modern master of the short story. "

spellbound.......2007-04-12
This book offers some of Oates' finest short stories. If you are an Oates fan you must purchase this book and if you want to become one you also have to buy that book.
I must confess I like her short stories best, they explore the depths of the human mind and soul leaving you wonder how you would have acted in a certain situation. The books are often too complex and she tends to lose focus but not so with her short stories. You can devour them at once or take your time and eat one at a time;-)
There is no stopping this amazing author!.......2004-11-28
Joyce Carol Oates is one of my all-time favorite authors. Her work is amazing and with prose so beautiful that it is at times lyrical. I have loved all of her short story collections and marvel at the fact that am all the more impressed every time I pick up a new Oates book. Faithless: Tales of Transgression isn't an exception. This amazing short story collection covers a vast variety of subjects that speak to you and move you to the core. Some are dark and others are downright shocking, but they are always memorable. My favorites are "Ugly," "Physical," "Secret, Silent," "The Vampire," "A Manhattan Romance," "We Were Worried About You," and "Faithless." Here you will find stories centered on self-esteem, relationships gone awry and even murder mysteries (I should add that the story "The Vampire" isn't centered on the paranormal, but it is a quite impressive and somewhat disarming tale that ought to be read). There is something for every reader in this collection. I for one have fallen in love Oates's keen storytelling all over again. I cannot recommend Faithless enough.
Bleak and bleaker.......2004-02-09
The stories are bleak and depressing and should be sold with a warning label. I came away from reading the book feeling sorry for Ms. Oates for her miserable perceptions on life.
one of the greatest living writers.......2003-04-16
while i'm no longer an advocate reader with my busy schedule, i do like to read short stories or novellas from time to time. in fact, i think i tend to suffer from acute laziness when reading anything that doesn't pertain to my work or junk mail which are receive tons of all the time in my p.o. box. after years of reading a short story here or there, i'd never read a book of short stories all the way through & in such a short period of time. from the moment i picked this book up on the bargain rack in border's to the time i went to bed later that evening, i couldn't tear myself away from the book. believe or not, i actually stopped taking phone calls & i had no desire for any kind of noise in the background (or just the minimum noise) which is unusual because i love music, movies, & lotsa noise generally speaking. when i began reading oates, i couldn't bear the though of the least distraction. i wanted to be literally taken away into her world of destruction, despair, and the tortured sould which only ms. oates can give. in a world of little faith, we find so many people here losing their way and struggling to maintain balance and find hope. faithless tells the tales of the sins we commit against others and the sins commited against us both forgivable and unforgettable. here we stories steeped with violence, aggression, & confusion which we can all surely identify with in this day & time. whereas there are books that you can read one short story & skip the others, you will want to read every story here and then seek out other books this magnificent woman has written. of all the literary minds still living in the world today, joyce carol oates has proved once again that she is tops & has never been anything less than the serious writer she aspired to be. recognized everywhere now by literature lovers &critics or even talk show hosts like oprah winfrey, it's impossible to avoid her name so you might as well follow the phenomenon yourself & discover the urgency of her work. it is easy to understand now after reading faithless why ms. oates work has won so many accolades through the years. this volume of work alone is proof that she deserved them. i'm now in the process of finishing up her collector of hearts but that's another story & another review. seek out faithless, my devout reading friends.
She's the best..........2003-02-12

Incisive Exegesis in a Popular Style.......2000-08-13
Roy Clements has produced a masterful study of key passages from Ezekiel and Daniel, giving keen exegetical analysis yet for a popular audience. He points out many points of contact between the attitudes of Israelites just before the exile and the contemporary church in the West. Altogether, this book provides a stunning Biblical critique of "Christian culture" and popular Christian attitudes while avoiding taking these passages out of context. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to study the prophets or for anyone concerned with tendencies in the contemporary church to see ourselves as having it "all together". As Clements notes, much of the church in the West has no concept of the kind of persecution the early church underwent or the kind of judgment Israel received with the exile, and it has drastically influenced our lifestyles, lingo, and attitudes toward Christian holiness and worship. Books like this are seriously needed in today's church, and it is quite unfortunate that his other books have all gone out-of-print. Snatch this one up, before it goes the way of the others! This man is often described as the best preacher in the U.K., and this book gives credibility to such claims.

Book Description
This book is a bold exploration of powerful themes: from everyday acts of love and hate in the ghetto to gestures of political and sexual survival in a postmodern no-woman's-land.
Wanda Coleman calls these poems "tough-tongued sagas. . . frank, raw, courageous, and sincere."
Ruben Martinez, in L.A. Weekly, says, "Michelle T. Clinton has written an ode to the soul of woman and man, of gay and straight, of black & brown & yellow & white-to the universal strengths and frailties of humanness."
Customer Reviews:
A Survivor From The L.A. Wars.......1997-07-12
The electrifying sexual imagery from one who has survived the gender wars ignites the reader's imagination and suggests ways of healing. This is both disturbing and enlightening. Although now residing in Northern California, Michelle T. Clinton is a survivor of the Los Angeles Wars, giving countless readings at Beyond Baroque as the Queen of the Los Angeles Poetry Scene. This work is a warning to those who revel in their complacency, and is a call to arms for those who dare. Profound. Moving. A historical document from a soul survivor. She is Los Angeles' gift to Northern California...and the world

Most favorite book of my entire childhood.......2006-07-01
What is up with this world that this book has been out of print for thirty years? I used to check this out from the library every other time I went to the library. I must have read it once a month for years. I feel emotional just thinking about the stories. "Sleep child, on my knee, your mother is an apple tree, your father is a fall of rain, sleep, child, sleep again." The little boy who was raised by an old granny, and that was the lullaby that she sang to him. He believed it and had a tree in the orchard that he particularly loved, that he thought was his mother. At night, when it would rain, he would think, "Now my mother and father are talking, and she is telling him about me." When he grew to be a man the old woman revealed to him that he was actually a prince, and that he had been sent out of the kingdom in times of war for fear of his life. Now the war had been won and it was time for him to come back and rule. Well, the tree almost died from missing him so much. I can't really remember the rest but take my word for this, get this book for your kid or for yourself, you will not regret it.

Graham goes off, and follows the goblins to their land. This one is good, and it gets funny when Graham is turned into a lizard for awhile. There is also a part in which Rosella is a small child, which is interesting.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent action, serious logical flaw in the plot.......2006-11-19
In this tale, the Romulans have developed a plan to seize the Enterprise and engage in actions that would lead to a war against the Federation. Valak is a Romulan commander who is also a scholar, where his specialty is human behavior. The Romulans have created a new class of warship, far more powerful than anything they have had before. The Praetor has selected Valak to command the first of the new class of warships in a mission to not only capture the Enterprise but also investigate a planet in the neutral zone. According to Federation records, the planet is under strict quarantine; no Federation ship is to visit it.
For reasons unknown to both the Romulans and Picard, a long-lost Federation ship is in orbit about the planet. The Romulans succeed in their daring plan to capture the Enterprise and both ships go to the planet. The situation does not conform to the initial appearance, as the planet is in fact a hollow sphere with living quarters inside. A very advanced civilization constructed it as a space ark, but there seems to be no one living on it. That turns out to be false, the original tenants and survivors from the Federation ship live in the ark.
The Enterprise crew plot to retake their vessel while simultaneously trying to learn all they can about the ark. Since there are landing parties in the ark and Federation people on both ships, the action moves from location to location. The story ends with the original inhabitants of the ark, who are shape shifters, restoring control of the Enterprise to Picard, keeping the Romulans prisoners, moving the ark out of the neutral zone and embarking on a plan to infiltrate the Romulan Empire. The infiltrators will try to influence it away from their warlike ways. It is a somewhat unsatisfying ending, because there is one severe logical flaw.
When the original Federation ship arrived at the ark, the inhabitants would have learned all about the Federation and the fact that the ark is in the neutral zone. A quarantine imposed by the Federation would keep Federation ships away, but it would be only a matter of time before the Romulans investigated. Once they realized that a Federation ship was in orbit about the planet, the Romulans would consider it an act of war and react accordingly. Since the ark is capable of moving at warp drive, it would have been a simple matter for them to move it out of the neutral zone to a more remote location and prevent the possible outbreak of an interstellar war. Therefore, while I enjoyed the action, the ending was unsatisfactory.
The Romulan Prize: Tessie's review.......2006-03-24
The Romulan Prize in my opinion was a very good novel, One that I will certainly read again and again, because each time you are given new details that you didn't know before.
I bought the book 2 yrs ago, and have been enjoying it ever since. I have to agree that the way he (Simon Hawke) portrays the Romulans, is how we know them in the series, but he does it without creating unnecessary conflict.
Excellent, excellent story........2004-09-23
This is one of the best-written Star Trek stories I've read, and I've read a lot. It is tightly plotted, with excellent characterizations both of the established characters and those unique to the story, superb pacing, and none of the sloppy proofreading so common to mass-market paperbacks in general and science fiction in particular. As near as I can tell, this is the first Star Trek story written by this author; I hope he's written (and/or will write) many more.
Great potential to be memorable, but..........2004-07-07
I just finished reading this book today, and I must say that the potential was great, but very minor problems has kept it away from the shining light of epic greatness. The flaws were a major time line flaw (Ro Laren left the Enterprise before Worf was promoted to Lt. Cmdr., this cost the book 1 star in my rating, ignore the past and expect to repeat the mistakes from it.), and the fact that certain (not many, minimal at worst) parts wore on to simple boredom hampered the books interesting story (which cost the book another star). The overall story is amazing by itself, the sequence of events were executed perfectly, and the story writing was actually above average. I enjoyed the entire concept of the story as well as an interesting look on how the Romulans chose their top ranking officers for missions. The ending was also amazing (which I am not going to spoil, ethics people, ethics) that it has actually prevented the book from earning a 2 star. Overall, I recommend approaching this book like fans of the current Enterprise (which I don't like) show which is to ignore the timeline just a bit and enjoying for what it is.
A solid action story and a mental chess game.......2004-02-02
The premise for this book is very interesting: the Romulans capture the Enterprise and take it to explore what they believe is a secret Federation outpost in the Neutral Zone. Picard and his crew must outwit their captors and deal with a first contact in the Neutral Zone. The overall writing quality is rather mixed. The descriptions are excellent. The fight between Riker and the Romulan first officer was very clear, very vivid, and had lots of interesting commentary on various martial arts styles. The non-main characters tend to be rather generic but vividly described. The two balance each other out for a generally good result. The Romulan captain, on the other hand, has more background and more distinctiveness. He and Picard make a good pair of protagonists. Finally, the book also gives us a good look at how the Romulan military and aristocracy behave and interact with each other. Overall this is a solid action story, with a lot of interesting subplots and details. I enjoy reading it.

bought as a gift.......2007-10-04
Bought this as a gift for someone in africa. I usually try to go by other reiviews when I purchase anything online, whether it's something for me but also & especially if it's a gift for someone else. Pictures looked good. Not sure if it is reasonable to expect these cakes to be made by anyone other than somebody with prior know-how. Check out the "See Inside" for details and assess for yourself if it seems to be something anyone could do.
Cake Book.......2007-10-01
This was not what I was expecting. It is for a beginner. Very basic. It does have good ideas for a beginner. And it does show that a person with no decorating abilities can make their own wedding cake. It just won't be real fancy. Which is what I was looking for.
Fantastic Find.......2007-09-03
These recipes are perfect! Not only do the recipes hold up during the course of making the cake, the taste is out of this world. I made a beautiful wedding cake thanks to this book. As a chemist and former chef, I highly recommend this book!!

The Perfect Wedding Cake.......2006-06-16
As an experienced cake decorator looking for new ideas, I was not impressed with this book. The examples were a bit staid. I would not even recommend it for new bakers since there are no explicit guidelines for making the decorations, constructing the cakes, etc. I would recommend The Well Decorated Cake by Toba Garrett. The instructions are simple and easy to follow even for the novice. And the recipes are wonderful. I have tested almost every one and had great results the first time.
Not impressed.......2003-07-02
Sadly, I was extremely underwhelmed by this book. It is just a collection of some above-average cake decorating. There are no instructions on how to make the sugar paste flowers or decorations. A better book would be Margaret Braun's Cakewalk. This book, however, is great for beginners or clueless brides. For us pastry folks, I recommend you pass on it.
Coffee Table Book.......2003-06-15
Nice coffee table book for wedding planners and cake decorators.
