With Dressed for Death (originally titled as The Anonymous Venetian), the Guido Brunetti mysteries reach their full power for the first time. As with Donna Leon's earlier books, Dressed for Death features a corpse that's prepared and deposited to create maximum confusion for the police. That tiny fragment of her style becomes a launching pad for much self-examination by readers about how others think and live, including transvestite "working women" and those who employ them.
The book offers two new aspects to the series that readers will also find rewarding: Vice-Questore Patta is knocked off his smug pedestal when his wife leaves him to live with a pornographer and Patta also hires the astonishingly capable Elletra Zorzi who makes the Brunetti series much more realistic in terms of portraying police procedures.
But this book could have been better titles as, "Vacation Lost." Brunetti is about to leave for two weeks away from stifling hot Venice for the mountains when a man dressed as a woman is found dead outside of an area where female ladies of the night normally operate. For reasons only known to Patta, Brunetti is assigned to lead the investigation in nearby Mestre. Although Brunetti promises to wind up the investigation as soon as possible, he knows that he's unlikely to be able to join his family. But dutiful to a fault, he proceeds to pursue a case that others want squelched.
The investigation takes Brunetti into the seamy world of those who sell their bodies to make a living . . . and where the police are seen as the enemy rather than as protectors. Brunetti finds himself out of his depth until his wife, Paola, asks some penetrating questions that shake Brunetti's self-absorption.
But watch carefully, there are unexpected events and people populating this book . . . and each unexpected aspect has meaning for the story.
Watch out for one more thing: This book may hook you on the series so that you won't be able to escape its appeal. I don't recall reading a third mystery in a series that's as good as this one.
Why? Venice makes the stories fascinating as you see behind the surface that the tourists experience. Brunetti is a fascinating, complex, and admirable character whom you will enjoy as a detective. His family life adds to the spice. The candid assessments of other members of the police also make for much good humor. The criminals in this case are people you'll be glad to see brought to justice. The methods will be equally intriguing. You'll also explore aspects of life you don't normally think about. As a result, Ms. Leon delivers more than you should expect from even a fine mystery.

All of Leon's Venice mysteries are great - they really give you a wonderful sense of place and also inform you about some areas around Venice.
I recommend reading the entire series if you are traveling to Venice.

The most annoying thing about this book is that it is also available under the title The Anonymous Venetian. So be careful when purchasing the wonderful Donna Leon Books. A couple of them have been published under different names.
Leon Tackles Tough Subjects.......2007-02-28
The air in Venice is stifling, but Leon's famous detective doesn't hesitate to dig into the most carefully guarded secrets of Italy's highest citizens to those struggling to survive as prostitutes. Without the support of his beloved family (they've gone on a well-deserved vacation without him) Brunetti doggedly follows a convoluted trail despite the loss of a fellow officer and an assortment of other personal and profesisonal obstacles. From the first scene behind the slaughterhouse, this book will show you both the beauty and grime of Venice. A terrific read.
Dressed for Death.......2006-07-20
No good deed goes unpunished as Comissario Guido Brunetti learns as this plot unravels. Appearances can be deceiving but Brunetti is not fooled by first impressions and is able to put together the pieces of this puzzle aided by his secretary Signorina Elettra and trusted fellow officers.

The finding of a disfiguraded corpse dressed in woman clothes forced detective Guido Brunetti to investigate - from the lower districts where male prostitution is a daily routine to the higher districts of Venice where lawyers and financers living a double life used the male prostitute to satisfy their vices and corrupted planes - to find the killer of the faceless corpse. A very well written novel that keep the reader intrigued since the first pages.
Leon goes 'high fashion' in this thriller.......2000-05-06
It's not that Venetians are unaccustomed to discovering a body in and about one of its many canalas, but when this particular body is found to be that of the director of a local, influential, bank, eyebrows and curiosity are raised. And even more so when this body is presented as a transvestite prostitute! All Venice is in an uproar!
Donna Leon returns triumphantly in another of her brilliant Commissario Guido Brunetti episodes, and the reader is not left for one second in anything but gripping suspense. Leon, an American writer who is enjoying incredible success at writing police procedurals set in Italy, presents "the Pearl of the Adriatic" in more than all its glory. With Brunetti, she explores not only its grandeur but reveals the city's mud as well.
Just as the body is not as it seems, Brunetti finds that there is even more deception to come. Two more bodies are found that are related to this case, and the author examines more than just police procedures here, as she seems to do in all of her novels. The various aspects of Venetian life are examined, the corruption of government officials, the criminal activities (covering a wide range of subjects from drugs to illecit sex trade), and, of course, the personal lives of her central characters. She has a great knack for character presentation that make them more than just "interesting and lovable"! I have found few authors who do so with such dedication and thoroughness.
Leon, who lives in Italy, certainly seems to know her subjects well, beginning with the first Brunetti novel, "Death at La Fenice." None of her books should be missed, not simply because she has a glorious setting, or fantastic characters, or plots that are convincing, but simply because she is a good read!

A collection of good salad recipes in a mediocre book........2005-06-15
`Sensational Salads' by book assembler and editor, Barbara Scott-Goodman is a great idea with a mediocre realization. Salads are one of those culinary topics which deserves at least one or more great books. What the author has given us is nothing more than a collection of vaguely original salad recipes with poor exposition on ingredients and what I believe are modestly good results.
There are at least four ways in which this could have been a much better book.
The first would have been to begin with an exposition on major salad ingredients, their availability, their tastes, and their affinities with other ingredients. One volume that does this well is my old copy of a `Better Homes and Gardens Salads' volume.
The second would have been to make a point of including all major named salads, including the Salade Nicoise, the chef's salad, the Caprese Salad, Panzanella, Cobb Salad, Salad Lyonnaise, and so on. One volume which comes close to doing this is my old friend the `Better Homes and Gardens Salads' and the `Williams-Sonoma Salads' volume.
The third would be to do salads by the seasons. An excellent example of such a presentation is `Twelve Months of Monastery Salads' by Brother Victor-Antoine d'Avila-Latourrette. This does salads not only by season but also by the month, based on produce that comes into season in each month. The author's introduction pays some lip service to choosing the recipe based on what is available and fresh in the market, but there is nothing in the book which assists us in doing the same thing.
The fourth would have been to devote the time and energy into addressing a single type of salad, such as the `Pasta Salad' by Barbara Lauterbach.
Ms. Scott-Goodman's book has the appearance of a volume on an express to the discount table at Barnes and Noble or Borders. Two signs are the fact that the author's bio gives her virtually no culinary credentials and that the bio of the photographer is longer than that of the author. These are only symptoms. There is nothing to say that a culinary newcomer can't put together an excellent book. Unfortunately, there is little in this book which distinguishes it from the very good to excellent titles cited above.
I will give Ms. Scott-Goodman some credit for organizing her chapters by major ingredient. My sense of the logical is just a bit offended when there are chapters on vegetables and beans. Beans are vegetables! That same sense is also offended by the chapter title `vinaigrettes & dressings'. Vinaigrettes are, of course, just a special type of dressing.
The introduction to the chapter on `Greens' shows a remarkably myopic view of the history of salads when the author describes the archetype for the recently past salads as being a wedge of iceberg lettuce and a bottled dressing. This may have been true of many suburban midscale restaurants, but all the classics mentioned above plus many more have been around for most or all of the 20th century and people enough interest in food to look up salads in a good cookbook would have found recipes for one or more of these classics.
The very first recipe in the `Greens' chapter annoys me just a bit when the first ingredient is `4 cups mixed salad greens'. For the moment, I will forget that you can find cellophane bags of `mixed salad greens' in large supermarket produce departments. Would it not have been better to specify either such a bag of greens or a list of specific greens names such as endive, frisee, arugula, and red leaf lettuce? This same recipe calls for vinaigrette of balsamic vinegar and olive oil, with salt and pepper being tossed in after mixing the greens with the vinaigrette. My first problem with this is that I doubt most people would associate balsamic vinegar with a `classic' mixed greens salad. Red wine vinegar is much more appropriate here, as this recipe is probably most accurately traced to the French cuisine. My second problem is why in the world would you toss in the salt and pepper instead of adding it to the vinaigrette? The very first vinaigrette recipe in the last chapter is simply oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper.
None of these little things mean that this is a BAD book. It is simply a journeyman author's effort that includes fairly good recipes but practically nothing special. There is no spark on inspiration that gives us some extra utility. There is certainly little which justifies the book's title.
All in all, for decent recipes presented in a clear manner with average to better than average photographs, I give it four stars, but suggest you look for something better unless you can get this volume for a steeply discounted price. Other books on the same subject are better. The food is good but the communication breaks down here and there.

Excellent variety of recipes.......2006-08-23
I enjoyed this book so much I had to purchase one for a friend! The book is inexpensive and I've had fun trying the various recipes to see which ones I liked the best. I also like the fact that some menus had canned items and some were for fresh items.
Not much spice.......2005-08-03
The 180 salsa recipes in this book could be reduced to 12 or so good ones. Many are simply repeats of others in the book with only very slight variations and a different name. I'm glad I got the book, because I will use the 12 good recipes, but don't buy it for 180. You'll be disappointed if you do.
Dynamite IS packed into a small package!.......1999-09-06
People have said powerful things come in small packages. Maybe that's why this "hot" book comes as a small thinner book. Salsa Lovers Cookbook comes with less than 130 pages, but is filled with "more than 180 sensational salsa recipes for appetizers, salads, main dishes & desserts!" Almost every page is filled with at least two recipes and I can't think of another salsa recipe that would possibly be missing from this collection.
This book starts out with an Anatomy of the Chile section with history, cooking ideas, tips and suggestions. The recipes go from an All Canned Salsa to an All Purpose Salsa to recipes like: Cherry Red Salsa; Instant Fire Salsa; New England Salsa; Any Meat Salsa, Avocado Salsa for Fish, Black Bean Salsa; Chili Cheese Salsa; Cucumber & Radish Salsa; Dry Salsa for Seasoning Steaks; Fresh Vegetable Salsa; Holiday Salsa; Madera Salsa; Mango Salsa; Pico de Gallo I through V; Salsa Carne; Salsa por Scallops; Salsa with Bourbon; Sweet Spicy Salsa; Yellow Fruit Salsa; Avocado Salsa for Salads; Salsa for Fruit Salad; Salsa for Watercress Salad; Banana Salsa; Champagne Salsa; Chocolate Salsa I through VI; Coffee Salsa; Orange Peach Salsa; Pineapple Dessert Salsa; Raisin & Rum Salsa; and Wine Salsa for Fruit.
Almost every recipe has ingredient readily available and can be made in only a few minutes. This is one of the only cookbooks that I can remember seeign that has each section in alphabetical order for very easy reference. Some of the recipes, in my opinion, have stretched the definition of Salsa, and some are a little-off-the-wall, however this is one of those fun books to add to your shelf.
