Myron Bolitar's father's recent heart attack brings Myron smack into a midlife encounter with issues of adulthood and mortality. And if that's not enough to turn his life upside down, the reappearance of his first serious girlfriend is. The basketball star turned sports agent, who does a little detecting when business is slow, is saddened by the news that Emily Downing's 13-year-old son is dying and desperately needs a bone marrow transplant; even if she did leave him for the man who destroyed his basketball career, he wouldn't wish tsuris like that on anyone. And he's not at all interested in getting involved with Emily again, not even to track down the one mysterious donor who may be able to save the boy. But when Myron learns that Jeremy Downing is his own son, conceived the night before Emily and Greg Downing married, he embarks on a search for someone who disappeared a lifetime ago. And what he finds leads him to a powerful family determined to keep an old secret, a disgraced reporter who may have plagiarized a novel to create a serial killer, a very interested FBI agent, and a missing child.
This is the seventh outing in a series that's been gaining in popularity since Bolitar's first appearance, in Harlan Coben's Deal Breaker. Myron's a bit of a baby, but he's not afraid to get rough when the situation calls for it, he's eminently likable, and his heart's in the right place. The fireworks are supplied by his friend and partner, Win, who really deserves a series of his own, and Esperanza, the lesbian wrestler-lawyer who has finally talked Myron into making her a partner in the business. Like Coben's other Bolitar novels, she's worth every penny. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Edgar Award-winner Harlan Coben brings us his most astonishing—and deeply personal—novel yet. And it all begins when Myron Bolitar's ex tells him he's a father ... of a dying thirteen-year-old boy.
Myron never saw it coming. A surprise visit from an ex-girlfriend is unsettling enough. But Emily Downing's news brings him to his knees. Her son Jeremy is dying and needs a bone-marrow transplant—from a donor who has vanished without a trace. Then comes the real shocker: The boy is Myron's son, conceived the night before her wedding to another man.
Staggered by the news, Myron plunges into a search for the missing donor. But finding him means cracking open a dark mystery that involves a broken family, a brutal kidnapping spree, and the FBI. Somewhere in the sordid mess is the donor who disappeared. And as doubts emerge about Jeremy's true paternity, a child vanishes, igniting a chain reaction of heartbreaking truth and chilling revelation.
Customer Reviews:
It's Myron - it's what you expect.......2007-09-08
I've read the entire series and other Coben books. This is Myron's show and it reads true to the formula. Witty, goofy, misplaced humor with some hits and some misses. The story line is more complex than some of the Bolitar series, but it is very interesting. The story is concise and holds your interest. If you are looking for literary genius, read something else. If you are looking for entertainment, humor, and the continuing life saga of the gang, then this book will give it to you. I've read some of the harsh critiques, and they may be correct on the grand scale of the literary scene, however, this is a very good Bolitar story. It is what you expect in this series.
Another First-class Suspense Thriller.......2007-07-28
Harlan Coben continues to prove that he is one of the best thriller writers around at the moment. A page turner is a much used phrase but in this case it is really appropriate. The author's books are always so well structured and his character's well rounded. He is obviously comfortable with his style and ability and this transmits itself to the reader making the reading of his books sheer pleasure from start to finish. Coben has now got a string of best selling crime novels behind him and all I can say is that I hope he continues to write for many years to come. The author lives in New Jersey with his wife and four children.
Myron Bolitar, ex-professional sportsman and currently a sports agent still has quick reflexes, but he never saw this one coming. His ex-girlfriend turns up with news that stuns Myron. Her son, Jeremy is dying and needs a bone-marrow transplant. The donor has vanished without trace. But what she tells him next is the punch that almost brings him to his knees, the boy is Myron's son, conceived the night before his ex girlfriend married another man.
Stunned by the news, Myron pulls out all the stops in the search for the missing donor, but the deeper he digs the darker the mystery becomes and doubts begin to emerge about Jeremy's true paternity . . .
DARKEST FEAR - BRIGHTEST HOPE!.......2006-12-31
This was the most powerful of Myron Bolitar's series. I could not put this book down. Every parent who reads this will feel the same. Dynamite! Am almost caught up with Myron and Win's escapades and they are indeed exciting.
Emily hits Myron below the belt with a shocker and asks him to find the elusive and possibly the only bone marrow donor match for her son. Myron finally agrees and it is one terrific ride.
For me, the best line in the book was Esperanza sayng to Myron: "No child could ever be harmed by having you in his life." Powerful words; powerful book.
Harlan Coben is one super writer. Now to bring myself up-to-date with Promise Me. I intend to read every one of Mr. Coben's books as it is published. They enhance my life.
Coben At His Best - A Review of "Darkest Fear" .......2006-09-01
Seth Godin is a marketing guru and a prolific writer. One of my favorite books by Seth is "Free Prize Inside." Godin reminds us of the thrill we experienced as kids in opening up a cereal box to dig for the free prize buried amongst the Corn Flakes or Cheerios - a whistle, a decoder ring, a puzzle. His premise is that the best companies and the best brands offer something extra - something beyond what the consumer expected when he purchased the product or the service. This seems to be an apt description of what Harlan Coben offers as an author to his loyal readers. Hidden inside the box of each of his mystery genre novels is something extra - an unexpected exploration of some aspect of human nature that takes the reader to a depth not usually experienced in a suspense novel. In the case of "Darkest Fear," Coben stands on the shoulders of Turgenev and explores the relationships between fathers and sons. Without his free prizes inside, it is possible that his Myron Bolitar series could have devolved into him cranking out a string of formulaic page-turners. To his credit, Coben has opted for doing the harder work of mining deeper veins of insight and understanding - hidden within the bedrock of murder, mystery, intrigue and non-stop action.
In "Darkest Fear," Coben's exploration of the vagaries of fatherhood is set within the story of the kidnapping of a child desperately in need of a bone marrow transplant. Myron and Win are called upon to find not only the boy - but also a missing bone marrow donor. The plot twists are breathtaking and brilliant.
This story contains some of Coben's most moving and incisive writing:
In this excerpt, Myron feels the thrill and frisson of expressing fatherly love for the first time in his life after he helps to find and rescue the kidnapped Jeremy, whom he has just discovered is his biological son:
"Myron felt his knees buckle, but he fought them and stayed upright. He ran to the boy. The boy stretched out his arms. Myron embraced him and felt his heart fall and shatter. Jeremy was crying. Myron lifted his hand and stroked his hair and shushed him. Like his father. Like his father had done to him countless times. A sudden, beautiful warmth streamed through his veins, tingling his fingers and toes, and for a moment, Myron thought that maybe he understood what his father felt. Myron had always cherished being on the son side of the hug, but now, for just the most fleeting of moments, he experienced something so much stronger - the intensity and overwhelming depth of being on the other side - that it shook every part of him." (Page 276)
In the process of exploring what it means to be a father, Coben also touches on an examination of what is means to be a man. In the selection below, Chase Layton ruminates on his feelings after having been physically assaulted by Myron, who resorted to violence to force Chase to help him find Jeremy. Myron interrupts Chase's workout in the gym:
"Chase Layton nodded and sat back on the bench. Then he looked at Myron. `Do you want to know what the worst part of it is?'
No, Myron thought, `If you want to tell me.'
`The shame,' Chase said.
Myron started to open his mouth, but Chase waved him quiet.
`It's not the beating or the pain. It's the feeling of total helplessness. We were primitive. We were man to man. There was nothing I could do but take it. You made me feel like' - he looked up, found the words, looked straight at Myron - `like I wasn't a real man.'
The words made Myron cringe.
`I went to these great schools and joined all the right clubs and made a fortune in my chosen profession. I fathered three kids and raised them and loved them the best I could. Then one day you punch me - and I realize that I'm not a real man.'
`You're wrong,' Myron said.
`You're going to say that violence is no measure of a man. On some level you're right. But on some level, the base level that makes us men, we both know you're wrong. Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about. It'd just be a further insult.'
Myron swallowed down the clichés. Chase took deep breaths and reached for the bar.
`Need a spotter?' Myron said.
Chase Layton gripped it and jerked it off the stand.
"I don't need anybody.' he said." (Pages 285-6)
It is because of this kind of writing that I keep returning to read one more book by Coben. As far as I can tell, I still have one more book in the Myron Bolitar series I have not yet read. Stay tuned!

Something Special.......2006-08-27
Each of the Bolitar novels is something special, but this one is special indeed. It combines the elements of all of the novels--a fascinating plot, top characters, and a fine sense of place--with an extended meditation on the nature and responsibilities of fatherhood. It is not a mainstream novel with incidental mystery/suspense elements; it is a full-tilt genre piece with superb thematic elements. It is also especially rich in its discrete paragraphs. Coben shoots for great one-liners and often achieves them. In this novel, however, he is forced to extend his thoughts an extra sentence or two and the results are impressive. I think particularly of a passage on grief and the perpetual stoop that follows it . . . and the smile that never quite makes it into the eyes. This is the kind of passage that you put in front of students as you tell them that the mainstream novelists may sometimes achieve passages such as that but that very, very few of them could create the plots and characters and settings that are the genre writer's stock in trade.

A Thrilling Conclusion to An Engrossing Trilogy.......2005-11-17
The Night People can finally rest at ease. The evil is gone. Done with. And while the memories of the vicious pranks, and horrific murders are still emblazoned in everyone's minds, they are nothing more than a part of the past. Everything is back to normal. At last. The friends who are still breathing - Dana, Jamie, Nate, Shark, Lewis - are trying to put their lives back together, and still meet late at night at their beloved hangout, Nights, where they can forget about the past. After all, it was Angelica Fear's ancient spirit that was wreaking havoc. And now Angelica is dead. Burned in a fire that destroyed her body, soul, and spirit for all eternity. But if it's true. If Angelica is truly dead, then how come Jamie still feels an evil spirit lingering around. And what did Angelica actually mean when she screamed out, "The evil lives," through the crackling of the flames.
It is a huge rarity for me to read an entire trilogy/book series all in a row based solely on the fact that I usually get bored with characters. That obviously doesn't apply to Stine's books, for after finishing MOONLIGHT SECRETS, I quickly moved onto MIDNIGHT GAMES, and finished up the trilogy with DARKEST DAWN, all in a period of two days. Stine's characters truly grow on you through each book, as you get the opportunity to see them over a period of time, and see how their personalities change after each bought of evil they encounter. Narrated by Jamie's sensible, caring voice, DARKEST DAWN is a marvelous ending to an engrossing trilogy.

Wonderful, bizarre and unique fantasy and science fiction.......1999-06-04
Lafferty in Orbit is an anthology of the Lafferty stories appearing in the famous Orbit series edited by Damon Knight. Playful, outrageous, ridiculous and sublime, Lafferty the magician performs open-heart surgery on reality, and just for kicks removes the lungs, liver and both kidneys, juggles with them, puts them back in random order, sews up the patient and walks away grinning. The operation is always successful, and we wake up feeling hunky-dory. Included in this collection is "Narrow Valley" an often-anthologized fantasy that is one of the funniest stories ever written. What happens when an Oklahoma valley a half-mile wide appears to be no bigger than a drainage ditch to the family of homesteaders who just bought it? "The Hole on the Corner" is tour-de-force science-fiction that will leave you rolling in the aisles. Lafferty the usher leads you back to your seat and mesmerizes you with "Continued on Next Rock," one of the most haunting and transcendent fantasies ever penned. Then comes a story, "Configuration of the North Shore" of a man obsessed by a recurring dream. Lafferty takes you out of normal consciousness and into the dream world where everything is possible, yet you never quite find the thing you are searching for so desperately, if it is a thing at all... Every story is unique and bears the Lafferty watermark, each time held up the light never appearing the same, but forcing you to see in a completely different way. Read this book, but check your reality after every story--or you may find yourself trapped inside.

Radio story works better as a book.......2000-11-25
For Doctor Who's thirtieth anniversary, the BBC commissioned a 5 episode original radio play featuring Jon Pertwee, Elisabeth Sladen and Nicholas Courtney reprising their roles as the Doctor, Sarah and the Brigadier. Written by former Doctor Who producer and sometime author Barry Letts, the story had all the potential to be something great. It wasn't.
This novelisation is the last in the long running Target series of Doctor Who books (number 156). In adapting his radio play, Mr. Letts seems to have found a better medium for his story.
In essence, UNIT is called in to investigate a death at Space World - a theme park whose owners, the Parakon Corporation, have inveigled themselves with the highest powers on Earth (up to and including the Secretary-General of the UN). Imagine everyone's surprise when the people running the company turn out to actually be aliens! Who could possibly have predicted that?
In keeping with the spirit of the third Doctor's era, political messages are somewhat ham-fistedly thrust forward, and the whole thing is wrapped up in a quasi-Star Trek storyline that is somewhat out of step with Doctor Who as we know it.
With more room to expand upon the contents of his radio play, Mr. Letts makes them more in line with Doctor Who - and possibly this is in part because the radio production was very brash and noisy, so the book seems sedate.
If you want to experience 'The Paradise of Death', this book is the way to go.

Yet the recipes are provided in easy to follow formats and use ingredients that are not difficult to find at any local supermarket. Then just for fun, Ms. Longbotham throws in such interesting ideas as Grilled Chocolate Stuffed Bananas.
For the chocolate lover, or even for those who just occasionally like to indulge, this recipe book is a great addition to any kitchen, and makes an excellent gift for your chocolate loving friends.

A must for chocolate lovers.......2006-01-07
Lori Longbotham's two lemon books-Lemon Zest and Luscious Lemon Desserts-are two of my favorite cookbooks. I like chocolate even more than lemon, so I was happy to see that chocolate was the next in her "Luscious" series. She includes great versions of homey desserts like Chocolate Pudding and Chocolatiest Crinkles, but there are also lots of grown-up treats too-like her unusual Nib Nougatine Brownies and the dreamy Chocolate Panna Cotta. Just about all of them are easy to make, and, as always, her instructions are clear enough even for inexperienced bakers. Also, as a special bonus, you can now get a version of this book called "The Chocolate Deck"-very portable, and a great gift for any chocolate lover!
Recipes Incorrect.......2005-12-07
I have only made 2 desserts from this cookbook, but they both turned out HORRIBLY. I have never had problems following recipes, so I was surprised and disappointed when the first two recipes I tried turned out terribly (Chocolate Turtle Tart and Chocolate Decadence). The Chocolate Turtle Tart was inedible, due to the caramel being hard as a rock. When my husband (a professional baker) reviewed the recipe, he laughed b/c the caramel recipe was incorrect! I served this at a birthday party and was very embarrassed. What a waste of time and money!
I was really hoping to love this book, since I am a true chocoholic. Maybe I will try one more recipe...
HEAVENLY LUSCIOUS RECIPES.......2005-08-06
If you are a die-hard chocoholic, and love desserts, you will love this book! The recipes are wonderful and the pictures make your mouth water.Lori Longbotham has done it again and has another winning cookbook.

Ahh for an organized mind..........2006-12-14
The cards are sturdy and attractive, and thankfully coated so that they wipe off fairly easily. The backs are graced with attractive photographs, usually of the card's dish. Thanks to the necessarily brief format, you know you're getting relatively simple recipes that don't require a ton of page-flipping. Ingredients and instructions are laid out quite well, and are easy to make out in a hurry.
Surprisingly, a four-panel foldout card includes a listing of all recipes with numbers (cards are numbered one through 50) as well as some basic tips and recipes for such things as melting chocolate and making chocolate frosting. We made two different kinds of chocolate mousse from the deck--a whipped cream-based mousse cake and an egg white-based mousse--and both were absolutely divine. The chocolate jelly (a chocolate jello-like dessert) didn't fare quite as well; it separated into two layers with different textures, and although it tasted quite good, not everyone at dinner was fond of the texture.
To a certain extent the utility of this deck is dependent on your personality and style; if you're highly organized, I think you'll find it much more usable than I did and can probably consider the rating to be 5 out of 5. If, like me, you have ADD-induced brain scatter, constantly having to find the small cards while you cook might drive you a tad nuts! Keep this in mind when deciding whether this item is right for you.
For Chocolate Lovers.......2005-12-09
"...In the year 2001, chocolate consumption in this country was more than three billion pounds. And for you, fellow chocolate lovers, I've created these recipes with as much deep, dark chocolate as possible. And you don't need previous experience making desserts or working with chocolate-I am totally confident that you can make these luscious chocolate desserts with ease." - From the deck
For those of us who consume chocolate at the rate of Emperor Montezuma, The Chocolate Deck is a wonderful treat! This 50-card deck features a full-color picture of the dish one side of the card and an easy-to-follow recipe on the other.
Some of the luscious recipes you'll find in this deck include:
* Chocolate Chip Meringue Cookies
* Quickest, Easiest Chocolate Mousse Pie
* Chocolate Refrigerator Roll
* Dark Chocolate Tart
* Mexican-Style Hot Chocolate For Adults
* Grilled Chocolate-Stuffed Bananas
* Chocolate Cheesecake
* Buttery Chocolate Wafers
* Bittersweet Hot Chocolate Soufflé
* Chocolate Panna Cotta
* Mocha Tiramisu
* Chocolate Whipped Cream
* Chocolate Martini
and more!
The Chocolate Deck comes with a 4-part fold-out that lists the recipes in numerical order, as well as describes the different forms of chocolate, necessary recipes (that aren't on the cards), a short history of chocolate, and how chocolate goes from cacao to the final product.
The cards measure approximately 5.5 x 3.75 inches and come in an attractive, sturdy box. The top comes off easily, providing easy access to the deck, and the box can stand upright.
The full-color photos make my mouth water! My only complaint with this deck is that a few of the pictures repeat. However, considering the tempting recipes in The Chocolate Deck, this is a minor criticism!
If you love chocolate or know someone who does, these cards would make a wonderful alternative to a bulky cookbook!
