Book Description

The Burning Legion has been defeated, and eastern regions of Kalimdor are now shared by two nations: the orcs of Durotar, led by their noble Warchief, Thrall; and the humans of Theramore, led by one of the most powerful mages alive -- Lady Jaina Proudmoore.

But the tentative peace between orcs and humans is suddenly crumbling. Random attacks against Durotar's holdings suggest that the humans have renewed their aggression toward the orcs. Now Jaina and Thrall must avert disaster before old hatreds are rekindled -- and Kalimdor is plunged into another devastating war.

Jaina's search to uncover the truth behind the attacks leads her to a shocking revelation. Her encounter with a legendary, long-lost wizard will challenge everything that she believes and illuminate the secret history of the world of...

5 out of 5 stars World of Warcraft: Cycle of Hatred.......2007-09-17

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was an easy read, with a good plot. If you are looking for a book with a lot of World of Warcraft history, you won't find it in this book. What you will find is a good fantasy story set in the World of Warcraft universe involving "big name" characters.

4 out of 5 stars Good History.......2007-08-09

Excellent history of the Warcraft world and why things are the way they are, especially the relationship between Orcs, Humans and Draenei

2 out of 5 stars Only for the most die hard WOW fan.......2007-08-02

This is without a doubt, the worst warcraft novel ever written. I have read and own all the warcraft novels ( and the manga as well), and for the most part they are well done and greatly add to the richness of the Warcraft universe.
The plot is flat, easily guessed in advance and reveals no new lore. The characters are stale, and worst and most unforgivable of all, the staple characters in the novel don't act at all as they should. I wonder if DeCandido did any research at all before writing. He makes Jaina look stupid and severely downplays her power as a wizard, while increasing her importance to the alliance. He makes Thrall even stupider and a woman hater, which is laughable considering he of all members of the horde actually fights for womens rights.
If we are lucky DeCandido, will never be allowed to pen another Warcraft novel. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this one, unless you can bear to see your favorite characters butchered ( personality wise) in an effort to glean what little lore this novel possesses.

2 out of 5 stars Fantastic if you're a 14 year old girl.......2007-05-01

While I do not mind the concept of a female character being the primary heroine of any story, I was extremely vexed while reading this particular piece of tripe.

Male characters, short of Thrall, are presented as cowardly, conniving, emasculated rags of filthy flesh, too stupid and dishonest to be of much use to Azeroth. If a male character is not flawed on some mental or spiritual level, he is lame or unfit, a mere shell of man when compared to near goddess-like images portrayed by the women in the story. Even a mere soldier is said to wield his sword better than his father ever did but worse than his mother. There is not a single male character in the book who is noble, upright, brave, or the best at anything.

Even Warchief Thrall is seen to blow-up at Jaina Proudmoore at their first meeting in the story. This is not the noble and wise Warchief of the Horde that those who play the MMO are accustomed to; this is one author's seriously flawed perception of the male of the species.

Again, I have no problem with a female heroine in ANY story. But what is present here is NOT the magnification and elevation of women for their own merits, but by the degradation and emasculation of their male counterparts. Even when a female character exhibits deep flaws (Magna Aegwynn) she is allowed the opportunity to redeem herself while males (Major Davin) never achieve salvation but rather slink off, victims to their own insurmountable neuroses.

Further, character and plot development take a back-seat to repetition of the basic lore prior to Jaina's becoming the leader of Theramore. Yes, Jaina betrayed her own father to keep a promise to Thrall. Yes, Thrall and the other orcs were corrupted by the Burning Legion, brought to Azeroth to fight for the demons, defeated and enslaved by humanity, and ultimately freed by the young Warchief. Yes, Magna Aegwynn defied the Order of Trisfal, was inhabited by the soul of Sargeras, and was responsible for the evil that was Medivh. But when these points are repeated over and over, ad nauseum, one begins to wonder if there is more to the story than this? A lot of padding here to support what, in truth, is very little substance.

Further, the author seems to know exceedingly little about the world of Azeroth as it manifests in its most elaborate and versatile medium: the MMORPG that is The World of Warcraft. At one point, a demonic ritual is performed which leaves behind the apparent stench of sulfur and thyme. While a seemingly trivial detail that might be overlooked, ardent fans of the Warcraft universe would wonder, "Why thyme?" Why not one of the herbs found in Azeroth such as Silverleaf, Plaguebloom, or (more appropriately, given its proximity to areas of demonic manifestation) Gromsblood? Did the author of this book even play the game prior to writing it or did he just research the lore of the world and hope for the best?

If you're a 14 year old girl, still prone to thinking of boys as "icky" then this is the book for you. If you're an adult who enjoys all that Azeroth has to offer and finds the lore of the world compelling, you may skip this tome safely.

Two stars because I'm feeling generous today.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed, but Decent.......2007-02-10

I was excited to start reading this book when I got it. I was a little disappointed though. It's not a BAD book, it's just not good. The plot is not strong and there isnt enough character developement. Most of the book is people standing around talking about who did what and discussing the past. I thought the book started strong and there are some high points and interesting characters, but when I finished the book I remember thinking... "that's it?"

    Book Description

Violence so often begets violence. Victims respond with revenge only to inspire seemingly endless cycles of retaliation. Conflicts between nations, between ethnic groups, between strangers, and between family members differ in so many ways and yet often share this dynamic. In this powerful and timely book Martha Minow and others ask: What explains these cycles and what can break them? What lessons can we draw from one form of violence that might be relevant to other forms? Can legal responses to violence provide accountability but avoid escalating vengeance? If so, what kinds of legal institutions and practices can make a difference? What kinds risk failure?

Breaking the Cycles of Hatred represents a unique blend of political and legal theory, one that focuses on the double-edged role of memory in fueling cycles of hatred and maintaining justice and personal integrity. Its centerpiece comprises three penetrating essays by Minow. She argues that innovative legal institutions and practices, such as truth commissions and civil damage actions against groups that sponsor hate, often work better than more conventional criminal proceedings and sanctions. Minow also calls for more sustained attention to the underlying dynamics of violence, the connections between intergroup and intrafamily violence, and the wide range of possible responses to violence beyond criminalization.

A vibrant set of freestanding responses from experts in political theory, psychology, history, and law examines past and potential avenues for breaking cycles of violence and for deepening our capacity to avoid becoming what we hate. The topics include hate crimes and hate-crimes legislation, child sexual abuse and the statute of limitations, and the American kidnapping and internment of Japanese Latin Americans during World War II. Commissioned by Nancy Rosenblum, the essays are by Ross E. Cheit, Marc Galanter, Fredrick C. Harris, Judith Lewis Herman, Carey Jaros, Frederick M. Lawrence, Austin Sarat, Ayelet Shachar, Eric K. Yamamoto, and Iris Marion Young.

5 out of 5 stars The Unknown Hobbit.......2002-02-18

When The Hobbit was first published in 1937, it was acclaimed as a good book for children, but did not meet with any serious critical response. After the publication of The Lord of the Rings (1954-55), The Hobbit was often regarded as the 'precursor' of the Ring-epic, but in the light of the latter, The Hobbit was bound to run every risk of being misunderstood in its composition as well as in its intention.

To make The Hobbit conform to The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien's second edition of 1951 had to make some minor modifications, which nevertheless completely changed part of the story (the finding of the ring). Without any doubt, The Hobbit now forms part of the Ring-tale, but our purpose of understanding how the text was created is achieved mainly by setting the trilogy aside. The Hobbit existed for more than fifteen years as an independent book, a tale with a clear beginning and a similarly clear end, demanding no sequel whatsoever. The fact that there is no study yet which discusses the original Hobbit without taking The Lord of the Rings into consideration, inclined the present author to attempt such a survey. This narrowing of the focus leads to results somewhat different from those achieved in former discussions of the text. The interpretation of the text is (for the story-line) based on the first (1937) edition of The Hobbit. The revised version of the third (1966) edition, which is now in print, is also evaluated in detail.

It is difficult to classify the genre of The Hobbit; the book cannot be described as an 'epic', but on the other hand it also seems to resist the label 'Märchen' because of its considerable length. The two-dimensional structure, which Max Lüthi points out as a typical aspect of the 'Märchen', can still be found in The Hobbit ("There and Back Again"). The transition from the realistic to the fantastic has recently been acknowledged by H.W. Pesch as a fundamental notion of fantasy-literature.

To achieve a clearly structured analysis of the creation of the text, the investigation adopts R.Lachmann's three-part model of a "pragmatically orientated theory of texts". The first and second parts of the study apply A.Dundes's distinction between "motif" (etic unit) and "motifeme' (emic unit). The motifs are classified mainly with the help of S.Thompson's Motif-Index of Folk Literature, whereas the structural analysis follows V.Propp's formalistic approach in the second edition of his Morphology of the Folktale, modified and annotated by A.Dundes's commentary. These two parts, summarized as "selection" and "combination", are supplemented by a third, which discusses presentation (the narrator) and style, following for the former C.Kahrmann's textual analysis and for the latter H.Plett's principles.

      (1) The main character of The Hobbit, the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, represents at first sight the character of the 'unpromising hero', which appears in a great number of fantasy (and other) stories. Tolkien modifies the conventional aspects and throughout the tale builds up an individual, getting very close to Erasmus's concept of the miles Christianus. This development is not obvious from the beginning, and there is evidence that only after some hesitation did Tolkien decide to introduce the stock-figure of the "warrior hero" (impersonated by Bard) to slay the dragon, and to leave to the "hero" Bilbo Baggins the insight that "to conquer oneself is to conquer indeed" (B.W. Wardropper). At the same time, the hobbit exhibits the characteristics of the "heill hugr" or luckwearer (W. Groenbach), a dominant figure of Germanic mythology. All these traits are united in the person of a "hobbit"; it is possible to show that (even if Tolkien himself rejects this idea) his name and to some extent his outer appearance ("furry feet") are based on a blend of HOB and (RAB)BIT. The character of the hero is not as simple as is often assumed; even the name "Baggins" shows an interesting pun on Middle English bagge 'bag' and French bague 'ring', both of which the second edition of the Dictionary of British Surnames notes as possible sources of Bagg, Baggs. The story is peopled with other creatures, most of them non-human, but with sharply defined characteristics. In the person of the wizard Gandalf, one can recognize the traits of the Odinic wanderer and the wise man of the Germanic lore. The dwarves (sic!) and elves (in spite of some particularities) are closely linked with the tradition as registered in the Motif-Index. The choice of the dwarf-names, all taken from the Elder Edda, seems to have been influenced by C.N. Gould's "Dwarf-Names: A Study in Old Icelandic Religion". Tolkien's "goblins", who are twice named "orcs", are "mischievous and ugly sprites" according to the Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology. Although the name is English, these creatures are only classified as "ogres" in the Motif-Index; these also include "trolls", which in The Hobbit, appear with their habitual characteristics. The dragon is Tolkien's favourite monster. Smaug, whose name is derived from the Germanic root smúgan 'to creep', is (in Tolkien's words) the "personification of malice, greed and destruction", and the resemblance to the dragon in Beowulf need not be elaborated.

      (2) The structure of The Hobbit largely follows Propp's classification. Most of the "motifemes" are present. The structure consists of a main story-line with imbedded sub-lines, which are complete stories in the sense of Propp's Morphology. It is only in the end that the main story-line shows a parenthetical structure, which does not find any analogy in Propp's system.

      (3) For the presentation of the tale, Tolkien has chosen the role of the obtrusive narrator, well known in medieval literature, who addresses his audience and comments on the story. The situation of "telling the story" is underlined by the numerous intrusions of the narrator on his own story as well as the use of the receiver-including "we".

Tolkien uses a great number of stylistic devices, ranging from the phonological level up to the semantic structure of the tale. Using statistical methods, the study demonstrates that the style of the text rises towards the end. A significant number of archaic words (nearly 70 per cent) can be found on the last 50 of the 285 pages of the book, thus anticipating the "high style" of The Lord of the Rings.

Fans of the movie will find this book extremely enlightening. It gives the reader a much better understanding of events in the movie, the mutant culture and the characters. This book could almost serve as a program for the movie. It certainly sheds some light on this chapter of the planet of the apes mythos.

Beneath The Planet Of The Apes by Michael Avallone is the sequel to the classic first movie. It's short,134 pages, but does a nice job of covering the first film and then getting to the story at hand. Mr. Avallone does a nice job of working some of the story elements that were edited out of film. It is a quick easy read and a very good way to spend a few hours!

5 out of 5 stars This is a good cookbook for two.......2007-03-18

I read the other reveiws and people, it's just a cookbook. It has beef, pork, chicken, it has vegetables, soups, salads, desserts. Just like every other cookbook, but these portions are smaller and I am so thankful for that. I bought one for my house (now that we are empty nesters) and I gave one to my married to be nephew and future wife. I love the fact that I have no more leftovers and my nephew and his fiance love the new food to try other than the fast food and take out they are used to eating.

This cookbook calls for "real" food that you have on hand or that is easy to purchase without breaking the bank and does not require a lot of "special" food or cooking processes. I love that because in this busy day and time, I don't have a lot of time to shop for "different" food.

I hope you enjoy this as much as we have.

5 out of 5 stars saves room in your fridge!.......2006-08-16

My husband and I received this book for our wedding, and 4 years later we still love it. All our other books yielded 4 servings in most recipes, and we would end up with piles of tupperware containers in the fridge holding leftovers that inevitably went bad. We have tried all of the entree recipes in the book and love them. There are also a lot of recipes for soups, salads, and even some sandwiches food that is easily portable. My husband is the cook in our house- I rarely cook, and am very much a beginner, but all of these recipes were simple enough for me. Yes, there is a lot of chicken, but I don't know too many people who don't like chicken! And yes, there are a lot of vegetables too- but you're gonna be looking a long time for a recipe book without chicken or vegetables. If we didn't want to eat chicken or vegetables, we'd go to McDonalds.

3 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker's Cooking for Two.......2005-09-24

Possibly a good book for someone interested in lots of vegetables.

1 out of 5 stars Chicken Lovers Dream.......2005-05-22

This cookbook is only useful if you live on an above average income and love chicken. Eighty percent of the dinner recipes are chicken, most of the rest are salads or some variation of noodles. The portions are all divided into two person sizes, however there is nothing to help you buy only what you need to prepare a meal for two without left over rations. In short, this cookbook is completely useless for anyone closely resembling a newly-wed couple on a tight budget who happen to not love chicken. Now I'm off to find a cookbook I can hopefully actually use. Very disappointing...

4 out of 5 stars A great gift for Newlyweds.......2004-01-07

This was my husband's choice when we went shopping for cookbooks together. I grew up in a big, hungry family with no idea how to keep cooking for two people interesting. I don't have to worry about leftovers or the results of reducing a recipe's servings. Now I can watch our calories by making small portions of guilt-causing foods such as biscuits or Eggs Benedict. The Honey Lime Fruit Salad is so easy and tasty that I have doubled and quadrupled the recipe for groups.

This may not have the best recipes Betty Crocker has to offer, but it has the best collection of usable recipes for couples that I have seen. This is an excellent book to give to someone of any average cooking level who feeds a small crowd. I would give this to a young person moving out on their own and any Newlywed couple.

This book is geared towards small households that rely on the microwave for preparing convenient meals. Of course, larger households can also make use of this tome whenever they need to cook in small batches.

A six-page first chapter deals with tips and techniques. Here you will find information on microwavable utensils, shopping and storage. The rest of the chapters are about hearty main dishes, minimain dishes, side dishes, and snacks and sweets.

One of the positive points of this book is that the ingredients for the recipes are listed in separate columns (for one and two servings) in order to avoid confusing the novice cook. I also find helpful the fact that the charts include information on power level setting, procedure and time although I miss the one regarding nutritional values. The illustrations in full color are a plus too.

I've tried out a few recipes in this book, and I wonder if the recipes were ever tested. Everything I've made has been sub-par. For instance, the meatloaf recipe came out with an inch layer of water on top of it! Did they even account for the water content in vegetables? Although the pictures look good, the actual products are not. I recommend recipes in Cooking Light magazine, everything I've ever made there has been phenomenal.

The book arrived in a timely manner and in good condition as described. I even got an e-mail confirming my purchase, which was very nice. However, the paperback I received was not a copy of the hardcover spiral-back edition I was expecting, although the title was the same. It was not the book I wanted and did not contain the same recipes or format. But this is not the seller's fault -- simply the optimistic hopes of the purchaser, searching for a First Edition of the 1958 edition of the General Mills, Inc., book by this title. Thanks for your efforts.

My mom's 1958 edition was used faithfully by her, and passed on to me. It is by far the best cookbook I've read/used...and I read cookbooks frequently. If you can find this book, buy it!

With 100-plus cookbooks in three languages and thousands of clipped recipes, this is the book I use most. For simple pot roast, tomato aspic, and apple pie - the stuff of everyday meals - I search the other books - and find the easy recipe here. In the 1958 edition! With the pages falling out! And everything tastes good. You'll love it, too!
