Book Description

The key to a modern murder lies in the sands of history.

Examining a badly decomposed corpse is de rigueur for forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. But puzzling damage on the body of a shooting victim, an Orthodox Jewish man, suggests this is no ordinary Montreal murder. When a stranger slips Tempe a photograph of a skeleton unearthed at an archaeological site, Tempe uncovers chilling ties between the dead man and secrets long buried in the dust of Israel. Traveling there with Detective Andrew Ryan, Tempe plunges into an international mystery as old as Jesus, and centered on the controversial discovery of Christ's tomb. Has a mastermind lured her into an elaborate hoax? If not, Tempe may be on the brink of rewriting two thousand years of history -- if she can survive the foes dead set on burying her.

"A gripping and explosive new thriller from internationally acclaimed forensic anthropologist and New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs, featuring Temperance Brennan and Detective Andrew Ryan on the trail of a modern murder and an ancient biblical mystery... When an Orthodox Jewish man is found shot to death in Montreal, Temperance Brennan is called in to examine the body and to figure out the puzzling damage to the corpse. Unexpectedly, a stranger slips her a photograph of a skeleton and assures her it is the key to the victim's death. Before she knows it, Tempe is involved in an international mystery as old as Jesus, and one that could lead to the rewriting of two thousand years of religious history. As Tempe investigates, she learns that the stranger's picture shows bones uncovered during an archaeological dig. She discovers the Montreal shooting victim ran an import business that just might have been a front for the trading of black market antiquities. Along with Detective Andrew Ryan and biblical archaeologist Jake Drum, Tempe travels to Israel to probe the origins of the skeleton and the ancient crypt in which it was found. Together they make a startling discovery that raises radical questions about Christ's death and places them squarely in the middle of a swirling controversy. Could one of the tombs really be Christ's last resting place? Are the bones in the ancient ossuary the last remnants of James, the brother of Jesus, as the inscription claims? Or has someone concocted an elaborate hoax? Using her skills as a forensic scientist, Tempe plunges into the most controversial case of her career. The stakes have never been higher -- the more she learns, the greater the danger. And though Ryan is sexier and more engaging than ever, he may not be able to protect Tempe in this place where there seem to be so many foes. Cross Bones, with its lightning pace, intricately plotted story, riveting and state-of-the-art forensic detail, is Kathy Reichs's most compelling and dramatic novel yet. "

4 out of 5 stars Chock-full of intriguing ideas and theories; sure to please many types of readers.......2007-09-29

Kathy Reichs expands from a pure murder mystery/thriller to more of an intellectually based murder mystery/thriller/archaeologically-based police procedural in "Cross Bones." Tempe Brennan is called in to assist in the autopsy of Avram Ferris - an autopsy bitterly contested by Ferris' rabbi, wife and other members of the Jewish community. When Tempe attempts to comfort Ferris' wife (an attempt rudely rebuffed by Miriam Ferris), a man calling himself Kessler stops her in the hall and gives her a photograph of a skeleton, telling her that Ferris gave him the photograph and instructed him that, if anything happened to him (Ferris), it was related to the photograph.

Thus begins the search for information on the skeleton, for the actual skeleton itself, who the skeleton is, etc., which eventually leads both Tempe and Andy Ryan (her beau) to Israel. There Tempe hooks up with her friend Jake and continues to search for the truth behind the murder of Ferris and the identity of the mystery skeleton.

An interesting mixture of archeology, theology and police procedural, this book mixes reality and fiction into a truly fascinating creation. In the version I have (Pocket Star books export edition March 2006 ISBN-13: 978-1-4165-2407-6 or ISBN-10: 1-4165-2407-X) there is a "From the Forensic Files of Dr. Kathy Reichs" between the end of "Cross Bones" and the preview of "Monday Mourning" that describes the real events she used as the basis of this story. I, personally, very much enjoy when an author does this, so I did enjoy this book a great deal for that alone. I also liked the fact that Tempe is much less neurotic that she used to be, especially about her relationship with Detective Ryan. So, all in all a recommend from me.

3 out of 5 stars Combines anthropology with archeology..........2007-07-28

Kathy Reichs combines forensic anthropology with archeology in her Temperance Brennan book, Cross Bones.

In Cross Bones, Reichs builds a story around facts from archeological digs at Masada in the 1960s and the "discovery" of the James ossuary in 2002 (allegedly the brother of Jesus). The book opens with the death of an Orthodox Jewish merchant in Montreal. But is it possible that what looks like a suicide could possibly be a murder? Immediately after the autopsy, a stranger slips Brennan a photo of a skeleton taken at Masada and claims "This is the reason Avram Ferris is dead."

Avram Ferris operated an import business with most of his merchandise coming from Israel. Brennan suspects that perhaps Ferris was dealing in illegal antiquities, including bones. Inspector Andrew Ryan and Dr. Brennan travel to Israel to continue the investigation. There, she meets up with an academic friend and archeologist, Jake Drum. Not only do they need to discover the secret of the Masada skeleton (could it be the bones of Christ?), but it is possible that it might have ties to the ancient crypt discovered by Drum and believed to belong to the family of Jesus.

One aspect I liked about Cross Bones is that Reichs begins by listing the historic truths around which she builds her story. And as with her later books, she ends it with a section called "From the Forensic Files of Dr. Kathy Reichs." In it, she explains where she got the idea for Cross Bones. In this case, the idea came from a friend and colleague, Dr. James Tabor, a Biblical archeologist and scholar. But while I liked the factual aspects of the plot, the rest of it is pretty unbelievable. As a forensic anthropologist, her job would have ended at the autopsy-room door. Traipsing around Israel as part of the investigation would never happen in real life. However, I enjoy the things I learn from Reichs about her job and she's still worthy of three stars for Cross Bones.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2007-07-25

There is nothing more disapointing when reading a book of this type than to get to the end and find that one of the main questions posed by the book isn't answered. That is what happened here. Of course as with any Tempe Brennan novel bones are an important element. In this one whose bones they are is a key question for much of the book. [Spoiler alert] And we never find out whose bones they are!!!! Moreover, the identity of the killer is telegraphed from certain phone records yet Tempe and Ryan are unable to sort it out.

This one was an extreme diappointment in light of Ms. Reich's prior books.

2 out of 5 stars Not Up to Her Usual Standards.......2007-07-15

This is another Tempe Brennan and Andrew Ryan story, which is fine. What I didn't enjoy was all the technical and religious stuff that didn't really add much to the mystery for me, but then the mystery wasn't too great either.

I liked the author's writing style this time, but didn't enjoy the story. I hope this book isn't a sign of things to come from Ms. Reichs.

5 out of 5 stars We love this book!.......2006-09-15

Our World was clearly written for the elementary-school set, but my preschool aged daughter loves it! The photographs of children, famous places, and daily life around the world are beautiful. The book is divided into continents, with several countries from each continent further explored. Topics covered include food, maps, schools, favorite past-times, pets, and simple (political) maps of the continents. I find the sprinkling of Disney characters throughout the book to be distracting and sometimes confusing, but it doesn't seem to bother my daughter. I would say this book is well worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars Great Geography/Culture Resource.......2006-04-19

With its stunning photography and colorful layout, this book is sure to capture your child's imagination. Far from being a boring book of facts, it teaches about distant lands from the child's perspective. Included are native games, foods, religion, typical school subjects, & more. Unfortunately, like most books of this nature, the book has an obvious P.C. slant. There are large sections dedicated to how humans are destroying the world. Careful planning was also utilized to ensure that every ethnic background was given equal footing, regardless of their actual contribution to society. With a little editing and explanation, this can be a wonderful tool for sparking the interest in your children for other cultures.

Book Description

When giant bones are found on a farm in New York State in 1801, no one knows what sort of creature they came from. Are they the fossilized bones of an elephant or of a mammoth, the huge animal that has recently been unearthed in northern Russia? Or do they come from a different animal entirely? There's only one way to find out--dig up and assemble a complete skeleton of the creature. And Charles Willson Peale is just the man to take on the job.

At the age of sixty, Peale has already made his mark as a portrait painter and scientist, as well as the founder of the first natural history museum in the United States. If he can put on display a skeleton of the mysterious creature, people will flock in even greater numbers to his Philadelphia museum. The skeleton may also help to prove a controversial new theory: that some animals that once roamed the Earth have become extinct.

As he searches for more bones, Peale must dig at several different sites. He is confronted by flooding, threats of cave-ins, and oppressive heat but persists in his quest. What he eventually finds confirms the existence of a previously unknown animal -- the mastodon It also provides solid evidence not only that some animals have become extinct, but also that the Earth is far older than anyone ever imagined.

Based on Charles Willson Peale's own diaries and journals, The Mystery of the Mammoth Bones is a gripping scientific thriller.

I HAVE PRESENTED MY RESEARCH TO VARIOUS SCHOOL GROUPS IN OUR AREA AND HAVE ALSO DONATED COPIES OF THIS BOOK TO THE VARIOUS SCHOOL LIBRARIES. WHILE THE BOOK IS WRITTEN FOR CHILDREN, I DID NOT FIND IT BORING. I ACTUALLY FOUND IT VERY INTERESTING AND LEARNED ALOT MORE FROM IT. I WAS AMAZED BY THE SIMILARITIES OF THE ORIGINAL FIND WHICH TOOK PLACE IN THE EARLY 1900'S AND OUR RECENT FIND. ALTHOUGH OUR TECHNOLOGY IS MUCH MORE ADVANCED, THE SITE IN WHICH WE FOUND OUR MASTODON, IS STRIKINGLY SIMILAR. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN THIS SUBJECT.

5 out of 5 stars Chills That Urge You to Read on.......2003-03-31

Reading has become somewhat of a routine task for me lately and though I'm always interested in what I consume, I seldom take real delight in a book any more. Reading Bones of the Cross was truly an exception for me. I found an old-time enjoyment here, in a novel that sustains a rather captivating story--and was eager to get back to the tale periodically to finish my devouring of the personalities and events.

Dr. Bill Mullins, with his wife, is visiting his sister-in-law in a small town in Missouri. An M.D., who has become a forensic anthropologist, Mullins is asked by the local sheriff to have a look at a precisely patterned graveyard. He very much knows what he is about in arranging for the excavation and examining the bones. The doctor is convincing enough in his endeavors to make the reader believe that author Denhart has been there, done that, whether he actually has, or not. The forensic anthropology material is absorbing and neither too dark for the habitual cozy reader nor too fluffy for the mystery fan seeking a grittier tale.

At the same time that Mullins plies his fascinating trade, he also reels in the reader with a substantial amount of personal decency, honesty, and human vulnerability. He's a well-drawn character, fully capable of both holding our attention and pursuing a solution to a series of mystifying killings.
In the interest of full disclosure, I admit to having a book out from the same publisher, but that isn't at all why I give this book a two thumbs up. I enjoyed the progression from page one (when the investigation get its start), through to the excavation of the burial sites, and then to the increasingly suspenseful and intriguing conclusion.

I truly believe that every mystery reader I know will enjoy this one. The book is structured well, the protagonist is sympathetic, and the pace just right. This is the type of novel that has gone into creating fandom for the genre. Bones of the Cross offers a trip away for the reader--not from reality, but to a place both (safely) dangerous and compelling. It's just a darn good read, a couple of hours of relaxation with an interesting fellow who is doing a type of work we all like finding out about. If I enjoyed this book subsequent to hours of correcting student fiction, you will also satisfy your own hunger here for the perfect evening distraction. G. 5 out of 5 stars A Work Ahead of Its Time.......2006-06-03

I read this when it first came out in paperback - decades ago. I recall that I found it fascinating and remarkably logical at the time. Since my copy has been long, long since lost,I wish I could remember the details of it better. Built around an archaeological discovery at Masada, it was (like its more recent counterparts, HOLY BLOOD HOLY GRAIL and BLOODLINE OF THE HOLY GRAIL) based on a combination of research and speculation. However, I think the proportions leaned more towards the "speculation" side and less toward the "research" side - simply because less research material was available to the writer back then - than its modern literary kin. Interestingly, even without the same research material available to its author, it reached many similar conclusions. Where it does differ, though, the differences are as interesting as the similarities. It was, indeed, a work ahead of its time.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended to everyone.......2005-07-08

It has been said that at the core of every myth, there is a grain of truth. Mr. Joyce presents a very plausible explanation for the Jesus myth. It's a theory that I had read in other places as well, but he ties it together in a very readable manner. This book should be reprinted. Until it is, it is well worth making the effort to find it.

4 out of 5 stars An intriguing point of view that is seldom expressed.......2001-01-08

His scholarship is based partly on speculation, but it presents a very compelling case on a point of view that is seldom expressed, and when is, is seldom done so as eloquently as he does it. I would recommend it to both Christians AND non Christians as a compelling read.

2 out of 5 stars Sarcastic, But Thought Out.......2000-04-16

I read this book and i must say that although Mr. Joyce presents some thought provoking ideas, he is much to sarcastic to pull these ideas off.. In one review, it states that Mr. Joyce read the scroll, that is not true, he clearly states that he never actually saw it,but that he spoke to a man that claimed to have seen it. Most of the idea's that he puts forth, have actually been stated in other material. He is not the first person to believe that Jesus did not die on the cross, but lived to be a much older man with his children and his wife Mary. He is the first i have heard of however to put across the idea that Jesus's son died in his place.. Bar Abbus, meaning, Son of the Master. He very blantantly puts down any idea's at all that Jesus was Divine in anyway, or a master of manifestation... as i believe what Jesus taught, that we are ALL Divine, and i know that manifestation is real.. i would have to say that this is a book designed to take away any Spiritual thoughts or ideas that any of us have. Very sad. I didnt think it was worth buying.. maybe a quick read at the library.

5 out of 5 stars An Exploration Into The Possibility of A Living Christ.......2000-02-22

The book is based upon the auther's claim that he viewed a scroll that was apparently written by Jesus in A.D. 67 in Masada. If the author's claim is true (which I am inclined to think it is), this poses enormous implications for the foundations of Christianity as we know it today. Instead of focusing on the scroll's content (the author claims to have never actually read the scroll, only to have seen it), the book focuses on the implications of its existence and examines other evidence to verify if the scroll could be authentic. The book is an excellent read for anyone of moderate skill and should take no more than a week to get through. Despite the historical detail into which the book delves, Joyce explains all of his research in layman's terms and is easy to follow.

For centuries, the zealot Kersian sorcerers have abducted innocent women and children for sacrifice to their 'no name' god, and have waged war upon Danaria's sorcerers. Now, they are covertly usurping the thrones of human-ruled kingdoms to do the unthinkable; they are building a massive human army to assist them in destroying Danaria's sorcerer bloodlines in an attempt to save their own.

Armed with nothing more than meager weapons, untrained sorcery, and mere instinct, a troubled human prince, an inept Danarian sorceress, and their friends, rise up and become the world's last hope to stop the Kersians, and save the sorcerers' dying race.

5 out of 5 stars A rousing, tautly written adventure of high fantasy.......2006-01-11

Book One of The Sorcerer's Twilight series, Left Horse Black is an exciting novel about a long-running war between the ruthless Kersian sorcerers, known for their bloody sacrifices of women and children to their "no name" god, and Danaria's sorcerers. Now Kersian sorcerers are seizing human-ruled kingdoms one by one, amassing a human army to exterminate their foes once and for all. A human prince, an unskilled Danarian sorceress, and their friends must band together, as their pooled strength is the one chance the world has to stop the Kersian's depravity and save a dying race. A rousing, tautly written adventure of high fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars Left Horse Black.......2005-10-19

This is a gripping story of courage and friendship pitted against treachery and madness, the desire to defend homeland and lifeway vs. conquest and destruction. Perhaps this is a fantasy, and sorcery, light and dark, is a major component within it, but the driving forces moving the characters for good or ill are all-too-familiar in our own world.

The writing is excellent, the people and story itself well developed. My only complaint is that Left Horse Black is a first novel, and I'll have to summon some semblance of patience while I wait for the next installment in the saga to come out.

4 out of 5 stars Real nice character development!.......2005-10-16

Throughout much of the fantasy I read, I often crave a better attachment to the characters. I can enjoy books that don't give me 3-D characters, but I prefer to wind up really thinking about the personalities of the characters; to really get sucked in by the characters beyond the plot. In Left Horse Black, I get character satisfaction. I really enjoyed the way the author "draws" her characters. For example, we watch a key character (Tnasha) learn and grow through her flaws in a sincere, yet sometimes humorous way. I was also (pleasantly) surprised to see a proficient, bold soldier shed some tears. I even wound up having some sympathy for the villian, even though I didn't want to. I think that's great character development and I'm looking forward to reading Book II, Warriors Blood Red.

4 out of 5 stars When is the sequel coming out?.......2005-08-26

This book follows a prince trying to save his throne from the bad guys and a sorceress who is trying to save an abducted girl from the same bad guys. After the sorceress is taken prisoner and loses her amulet the prince and sorceress and their friends find out they both need to get rid of the bad guys, and come together to take the Kersian sorcerers (the bad guys) down. This was a great action book with really cool characters. I will be waiting anxiously for the next book because Reisner is one of my new favorite authors.

5 out of 5 stars S.J. Reisner produced an excellent first novel........2005-07-31

Left Horse Black is an action packed fantasy basically centered on Tnasha fen Schott, an inexperienced sorceress who, with her friends, courageously battles Kersians to save her homeland of Danaria. Kersians plan to overtake surrounding kingdoms in a sorcerer's war for dominance. Their plan is to not only enslave the human population but to use captured sorceresses for breeding, thus insuring the continuation of their bloodline. Much more, it's an intensely driven plot that takes you through the downfalls of Tnasha's attempts to enhance her powers and leaves you wondering if she'll succeed. This is a pace turner from beginning to end, at which time you'll find yourself looking for more. But hope prevails. This is part of a series by S.J. Reisner. Excellent novel. Highly recommended.

              Book Description

Now, at last, we see where E.T. comes from -- who he really is and what his own distant world is like. Return with him to the Green Planet, whose inhabitants are the supreme masters of all growing things in the galaxy. Wander through their immense enchanted gardens, to which E.T. has returned, with Gertie's geranium, a fondness for junk food, and an all-consuming love for the earthling Elliott and his family.

But things on Earth have changed since E.T. left. Elliott has begun to notice the opposite sex, and his cherished memories of E.T. are losing ground to thoughts of a girl in his class who wears a rhinestone ponytail clip. More important, he seems to have forgotten E.T.'s teachings of gentleness and peace. "He is about to become the most terrible thing of all," observes E.T. from three million light years away. "He is about to become -- Man."

              1 out of 5 stars Worst Book.......2006-05-20

ET should have died a long time ago. I wish that that stupid alien just was shot by Elliot while he had the chance!

5 out of 5 stars Bridge to a new adventure on earth?.......2003-05-01

I bought the paperback edition in late July 1985 and, believe it or not,I have read it more than a hundred times over and over again. It's an astounding story, many clues are given while you read the book on how E.T. can solve his problems. The keen reader can easily predict the outcome of the plot. The way the author connects the two realities, one on the Green planet , the other on Earth is nicely blended through the introduction of the telepathic beam, naturally off course, 'cause ET's a little mixed up.This gives way to many funny situations.Let's not forget that events narrated belong to the mid 80's so it might seem a little old fashioned when Julie, Elliot's school friend asks him for some help with her "BASIC" with black screens flashing green text! The book can be read at many levels; Et's worried about Elliot becoming grown up.According to ET's point of view, people on earth grew up to become violent so his mission now is to save his friend. This is a great message of peace.Younger children should also read the illustrated storybook. To conclude I always ask myself why in these years Kotzwinkle didn't write a sequel to this book due to its open ending.I think a new adventure for ET would be great: what happens to the turnip ship after they enter the wormhole? I hope Kotzwinkle will soon let us know. In an interview, Spielberg said that his movie ET is a "wonderful gem" so a sequel was not necessary because a sequel would currupt its magic.A new movie about ET would be great considering the power of computer graphic animated charaters we have today.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sequel! Should be a movie........2002-12-15

This novel is a joy to read. It leaves off where the movie ended, starting with E. T. watching the Earth slowly disappear out of the porthole of his spaceship. Kotzwinkle has a wonderful imagination and provides a heartwarming tale about growing up, memories, love, friendship, and best of all - adventure. This is a great read. It should be made into a movie. I give it a 5!

5 out of 5 stars The Candida Control Cookbook:What you Should Know and What You Should Eat to Manage Yeast Infections.......2006-02-19

This book is informative and gives a good idea of what to eat and not to eat. I appreciate the many recipes showing a variety of ways to prepare the limited foods we are allowed to eat during the die off period.

              5 out of 5 stars Informative Cookbook.......2001-06-01

This is a very informative cookbook. The recipes are the best I have found (and this is the third cookbook I have purchased). I wish I had known about using 100% pure vegetable glycerine as a sweetener months ago! Her recipes make you feel like you are eating "real" food again.

5 out of 5 stars Continuing my story Managing my yeast infection.......2001-01-15

It has now been 3 months on the Candida Control Diet and taking Lamisil --- I have my life back! Thank you Gail Burton for writing a cookbook that is realistic and good. It has been my bible over the course of this. I am purchasing CANDIDA, The Silent Epidemic and hope it will help me with figuring out what to do to maintain my healthy lifestyle. 3 CHEERS! for this cookbook!

5 out of 5 stars Anti Yeast Diet.......2000-11-06

This book has been a real help to me in my anti yeast adventure. I have been taking lamisil and following the diet for 3 weeks with great success. It is a roller coaster ride, but more ups than downs. The food is not the most tasty at times, but with so little choice it is hard. A favorite is the Oat and Orange Muffins (which I vary with different flavorings Raspberry is delicious!) -- they are simple to make, moist and freeze well. Also real good are the Rice Ball Cookies. This book is a must for those with this particular need. (ALSO - to a previous reviewer: I BELIEVE STEVIA IS VEGETABLE GLYCERIN AND WATER.)
