Book Description

Ukraine is the largest new state to appear on the map of Europe this century. With a population of more than 50 million people and a territory larger than France, the new Ukrainian state faces many challenges, not least of which is to forge a national identity after years of Soviet rule. Burden of Dreams examines daily life in Soviet and post-Soviet Ukraine, showing why Ukrainian nationalism and its program of "Ukrainianization"have appealed to the largest Russian diaspora and to millions of Russified Ukrainians. Focusing on schools, festivals, commemorative ceremonies, and monuments, Catherine Wanner shows how Soviet-created narratives have been recast to reflect a post-Soviet Ukrainocentric perspective. In the process, we see how new histories are understood and acted upon. This reveals regional cleavages and the resilience of cultural differences produced by the Soviet regime. For some people, the system they criticized yesterday is the one they long for today. The struggle to remember or to forget is particularly intense in post-Soviet societies. Burden of Dreams is especially valuable for showing us the monumental task facing a Ukrainian state that is seeking to craft cultural solidarity after years of Soviet rule.

4 out of 5 stars Burden of Dreams.......2000-05-05

"Burden of Dreams" brings the human element in the midst of historical events. The author shows how the fundamental changes in Ukraine has and is effecting the lives of its people, something that cannot be forgotten in any study of this kind. Too often an author focuses on one element, such as politics or economics, and forgets that these changes effect far more than national policies.

5 out of 5 stars Tale of Tragedy and Loss.......2001-03-19

This is a spellbinding story of a young man recalling his past, and the person who changed his life. This was absolutely heartbreaking, and I really enjoyed. Being translated straight from french, the writing style is a little odd, but before you know it, you're into the story. This is really good book report material. I read this book when I was twelve but I'd recommend it for anyone over thirteen.

5 out of 5 stars Must-Read.......2000-04-15

This book was the absolute best book I've ever read. It is a story of a boy who travels to Paris but retells his childhood. I found it hard to understand at first, but as I read on, I understood every word of it. I think this is a great book for all students who are my age, 12. It is an excellent read. A mixture of tragedy and romance and will touch your heart.

Here it is - a review about how hard it is to read a non-fiction book about how hard it is to make a documentary film about how hard it is to make a fiction film about how hard it is to drag a ship over a mountain. Seriously! The main problem with this book is that we hear the SAME story 4 consecutive times - first in the screenplay to the documentary, then in director Les Blank's journal, then assistant director Maureen Goslin's journal, THEN in a magazine piece. Enough already! I guess this was easier and cheaper than writing a real book on the subject.

3 out of 5 stars Mainly for serious bufs of serious films.......2000-06-23

The book of Burden of Dreams is a third level of self-reflexivity in action. First we have Herzog's "Fitzcarraldo", then we have Blank's excellent film, then we have this book about Blank's movie. Confused yet? For those into "method" film making, it's a fascinating read, but not much more enlightening than the films themselves. We get to read journals about how hard it was for Blank's team to watch how hard it was for Werner's team. And, we learn a lot about Blank, who is a treasure as a documentatarian.

Fortunately, the stories are worth telling. It's higher minded than, say, "You'll never eat lunch in this town again".

All have cured me of my desire to visit Peruvian jungle.

    Book Description

A young man, David, travels to America in search of success, only to discover a complex labyrinth of harsh reality and success that seem evasive.

A thought-provoking novel that epitomizes the struggles of the African immigrant in America, who has fallen victim to the African brain drain and caught in two worlds, where returning is almost as tedious as realizing his dreams of success in America.

In a detailed recollection, Charles Addo articulates David's struggles, as he searches for ways to success. At last, David grows to realize that corruption and economic mismanagement that permeate the African political system are largely accountable for the African brain drain problem of which he has himself fallen victim. He hooks up with a friend, in an Internet-based campaign that successfully helps topple in a first-ever transfer of political power from one elected government to another in Africa, the corrupt rule of army captain Rawlings, head of a military junta that seized political power earlier.

A must-read novel that inspires with an unusual insight into the resilience of the human spirit, and offers food for thought for the future crop of African leaders regarding the adverse impact of brain drain on the African continent.

I was first attracted to this book's cover as an 11-year old in a used book store. It portrays a lady in a flower field startled by a black unicorn. I read it and became emotionally attached to the characters, and it became my favorite novel. I have re-read it several times over the years, and eventually was fortunate enough to find the sequel, "Daughter of Destiny", in another used bookstore (though this book can be stand-alone). I even used "The Unicorn Dancer" for my college admission essay, wherein they asked you to write about a hero or heroine of yours, and I chose Alorie. She and the other characters are realistic yet fantastic enough to be entertaining, memorable, and inspiring. I highly recommend this book, especially to younger people interested in Fantasy/Sci-Fi. It is still one of my favs after all these years, despite all the other novels of the same genre I've read. Bring it back in print!

the unicorn dancer is a prose type fantasy. its abotu a girl named alorie seeking revenge for the deaths of her father and grandfather. the only way to do that is to find a unicorn, but the question is where? there are many memorable characters in her story including rowan, brock, vella and pich, not to mention marshall her dog!

5 out of 5 stars Nice tale for a young girl..........1998-03-24

As a beginning novel for a young person (especially a girl) with an interest in fantasy/si-fi, this is a quaint little ditty.

This is book two in the Icerigger series where we find Ethan Fortune and Skua September embarking on a mission to help their Tran friends once again. Both want to leave the planet, but they stay anyway and adventure continues. Foster did a wonderful job with this whole series, and I sincerely feel someone in the publishing industry needs to grab these books and re-print them. They are simply fantastic and are one of Alan Dean Foster's best.

5 out of 5 stars Time to make a reprint.......1998-11-06

This is the second in the Icerigger series and one of a number of books in the Commonwealth Universe by Foster. The way that he incorporates information from the other novels of the commonweath gives this book, and the series, a form of history and background usually missing in such works. It also is so well done that even if you haven't read any of the other commonwealth books, it is easy to keep up with the action and become almost involved in the events happening in the book. I just hope that they bring the Icerigger Trilogy back in a hardcover one book format, so that many more people can become fans of Fosters. Definitely a must read.

Mission to Moulokin is the sequel to Icerigger. It is about the further adventures of Ethan Frome Fortune, Skua September and Milliken Williams as they try to help their Tran friends qualify for admitance into the Commonwealth. It is a thoroughly enjoyable book as the heros battle against corrupt Commonwealth officials and an insane Tran leader, find the fabled city of Moulokin and learn of the history of the Tran.

Contrary to what the title may suggest, this is not a cookbook for the meals that come packaged in those nifty foil trays for your convenience. Emeril's TV Dinners is another stellar cookbook from master chef and television star Emeril Lagasse. This is the man who succeeded legendary chef Paul Prudhomme in New Orleans and then took the rest of the food world by storm. His rise has included a few award-winning cookbooks, including Emeril's New New Orleans Cooking, Louisiana Real and Rustic, and Emeril's Creole Christmas. At the same time as Lagasse was turning out terrific food at his restaurants and recipes in his cookbooks, he was hosting the widely acclaimed Emeril Live and The Essence of Emeril on the TV Food Network. And that is what Emeril's TV Dinners is all about--150 of Emeril's favorite recipes from his award-winning shows. But this cookbook isn't simply a revisit to some old television shows; this is vintage Emeril--great recipes from one of America's best chefs. Like all of his books and shows, the most refreshing thing about Emeril's TV Dinners is the approach. As he is fond of saying, we aren't building any rocket ships, we're cooking--plain and simple, and he's an expert at making great food easy and fun. His enthusiasm is infectious. You can almost taste Pecan Crusted Mozzarella with Baby Greens, Rock Shrimp Stuffed Flounder, or Emeril's Potato Truffle Charlotte. If you didn't see the shows, Emeril's TV Dinners offers another chance to find out why Emeril is still one of the best chefs in America today. --Mark O. Howerton

                            Book Description

Are you ready to kick it up a notch? Wait -- forget that. Are you ready to kick it up notches unknown to humankind? Finally, Emeril has written the book his fans of Emeril Live and Essence of Emeril have been waiting for -- a collection of his very favorite recipes from both shows.

It's all here -- from cooking up Fall River memories like St. John's Kale Soup, Roasted Scrod with Parsley Potatoes, and Boston Cream Pie with his mom, Hilda, to Louisiana specialties like Creole Spiced Blue Crabs with Green Onion Dipping Sauce, Fried Eggplant with Shrimp Stew-Fay, and Blueberry Beignets.

Hey, this isn't rocket science, but it's good eating, with starters like Caramelized Salmon with Cilantro Potato Salad and Stuffed Morels with Crawfish Remoulade. This isn't Kansas anymore, Toto, and these are salads like you've never had them -- Herb-Tossed White Asparagus, Fresh Crabmeat, and Grilled Radicchio Salad, Emeril's BLT Salad, and Molasses Duck Salad.

Does pork fat rule at your house (and if it doesn't, why not?)? Then take your pick of the pig --- Homemade Bacon, Andouille Stuffed Jalapeqos, and Pork Burgers in Gravy with French-Fried Sweet Potatoes. And don't limit yourself to one part of the barnyard -- try Emerilized Chicken Cordon Bleu, Funky Lamb Shanks, Pan-Roasted Filet Mignon Stuffed with English Stilton and Walnuts, or Smothered Oxtails over Spinach and Sweet Corn Mash.

Emeril's TV Dinners not only includes more than 150 recipes, it is jam-packed with candid black-and-white photography of Emeril behind the scenes, in front of the cameras, on tour, and really live in his New Orleans restaurants.

Great food but really fattening. Not really good for the Novice cook.

3 out of 5 stars Some interesting recipes, fun to read.......2006-04-06

The excellent Fish 'n' Chips recipe alone merits the three star rating. A number of other intesting looking recipes. Emeril's lively style suffuses the text and makes it fun to read.

My wife and I are big fans of Emeril, and we love watching his shows. This book has some REALLY good receipes, and you can choose ones as simple or as fancy as you like. The directions are spelled out pretty well, and the ingredients lists in the margins make sure you have everything. My wife was born and raised and New Orleans, and even she is impressed with some of "my" cooking from this book. Thanks Emeril!

4 out of 5 stars Recommended for the Emeril fan you know.......2005-06-20

I got this because I told someone I liked Emeril (about the five times a year I manage to catch his show). It's a gorgeous book and I highly recommend it for any avid Emeril fan. The recipes are well organized, the layout is beautiful, and it's a collector's item for a fan. For a cook who doesn't love/watch Emeril, it doesn't offer much.

I also tend to do a lot of healthy and low-fat cooking, which this book is not amenable to. The food is delicious, but you pay for that it fat in calories.

Many of the recipes are accompanied by a narrative from Emeril about, for example, the different types of potatoes you might use in this recipe, or the techniques used in cooking it, or a cooking history lesson. These make the book a stand-out item, but again, it mostly stands out for the rabid Emeril fans.

4 out of 5 stars Fun & Enjoyable to Read.......2005-01-14

I tend to think Emeril's books get a lot of low rated reviews because people seem to either love or hate the guy. I've always looked at Emeril as an entertainer first as opposed to a chef whose receipes I'm going to run out tomorrow and try to make. While the title of this book may lead to the belief that these these may be recipes related to those things that camein aluminum tins. The TV refers to his TV show as he presents 150 recipes from his year on the Food network.

There are some very exotic dishes to be found in the pages of this book. Things like Creole Spiced Blue Crabs with Green Onion Dipping Sauce and Rock Shrimp Stuffed Flounder,or Emeril's Potato Truffle Charlotte. From Fall River, MA to New Orleans you get 150 classic recipes. Whether its Cajun or dishes inspired by his Portugese heritage, there's quite a diversified set of recipes to be found here, all with Emerils enjoyable way of presenting them in a fun an entertaining way.

Honestly I will never make most of these dishes. It's just a blast to read. As I said I love wathcing and reading Emeril with his knowledge about food and cooking.
