Book Description

It's New Year's Eve, 1919. Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge has accompanied his sister to the home of mutual friends for dinner but gets a call from the office and has to leave. On the steps outside, he sees a brass cartridge casing, like countless others he's seen during the war. But this one has an engraving in the metal. Curious, he pockets it.

Soon after, Rutledge is on the southern coast of England helping the local police capture a murderer. Work done, on a whim he drives along the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic and takes a walk out on the headland. Returning to his car, he finds another engraved cartridge casing on the driver's seat. He's been followed.

The cartridge casing seems to point to the war and unfinished business there. To stay alive in the face of an unknown and unseen adversary, Rutledge is pressed to the limits of his skills. He's the prey. But who is the hunter?

5 out of 5 stars Detective for the times.......2007-05-14

With a combination of unusual mysteries and deft character realization, the Charles Todd duo create books with a fascinating perspective on the devastation to the psyche of individuals and of a nation caused by senseless slaughter in a war. World War I is as infamous for the pointlessness of the conflict and the incompetence of those generals who ran it as it is for the enormous heroism of the soldiers who fought and died in it. Inspector Rutledge is sensitively drawn and is a sympathic lead in these stories. Hamish is the truest of alter egos. I love all these books.

4 out of 5 stars Haunted..........2007-02-22

What haunts Frith's Wood--a long-ago Saxon massacre, or the more recent disappearance of a beautiful young girl? When the local constable is found there pierced with an arrow, Scotland Yard's Inspector Ian Rutledge is hastily dispatched by his foul-tempered superior to find the culprit. Rutledge, a veteran of World War I himself haunted by his experiences in the trenches, must solve these mysteries while fending off the murderous attacks of a stalker.

Todd realizes the life and people of the little English village very well, and the details of time and place feel authentic, but the stalker subplot fails to engage and feels superfluous. And, although Rutledge and his internalized ghost Hamish seem more collegial (Rutledge actually starts referring to himself and Hamish as "we"), it is hard to know how Rutledge's character can really continue to develop without putting Hamish to rest. It would be nice to think the series could sustain itself even without this singular, and signature, arrangement.

A darkly atmospheric read.

5 out of 5 stars A long but worthwhile wait.......2007-01-19

Just finished A Long Shadow and agree: couldn't put it down. This series has been a dependable source of suspense and excitement, and in additon I find Ian and many other characters described in a way that makes me feel I know them. And Hamish! How wonderful it would be to have a Hamish riding in the back seat with constant comments, warnings, and insights, welcome or not.

I've found some insights, too in earlier books, about the welcome home received by many soldiers after WW I: widespread lack of compassion for those who'd lost limbs, and especially for the "shell-shocked"...it's infuriating to think that people who were relatively safe at home during the war were ungrateful to the youth who'd risked their lives and spent years in the unimaginable misery of the trenches. I checked and found that this callousness was truly widespread and common.

4 out of 5 stars A well-timed transition.......2006-12-15

As always, a very nicely crafted Ian Rutledge mystery. In this book, however, the author begins to make needed and well-timed transitions in his angst ridden main character. For the first time, the reader begins to see rather than a totally beaten man, a man who's strength is beginning to re-emerge. Ian actually snaps at Hamish showing the start of a change in their dynamic. Perhaps they will one day become a real team as they solve the myriad of crimes placed before them. For the first time, there is an inkling that Bowles is just the nasty, corrupt person we were hoping someone would notice that he is. Hope for vindication on some level looms large - so gratifying. And the reintroduction of a female character from the last book in Ian's thoughts is heartening...he is beginning to be ready to re-engage in emotion. The introduction of a very interesting and challenging female character in this book, one that struck me as open ended, was encouraging. If Rutledge can develop a relationship with a smart, intuitive, independent woman (a la Maisy Dobbs) we will begin to see the more three dimensional man we long for. Thanks to the author for his understanding that we are ready to see Inspector Ian Rutledge start to heal and for his pre-war personality to start to emerge. A superb read.

4 out of 5 stars Good Shadows and Bad Shadows.......2006-05-24

I enjoyed this novel, as I do all of Charles Todd's books about Inspector Ian Rutledge. The Rutledge novels are well-written, are replete with minutely researched post-Great War period details, and delineate a type of character - the psychologically wounded war veteran trying to adjust - not seen often in literature these days. All these things are to the good, and Todd has marked out an almost virgin territory that has me hooked as a fan.

But, what for many may be part of the appeal of these books has become a liability for me. I'm talking about the voice of Hamish MacLeod that resides inside Rutledge's head. If Hamish in life was as bitter, abusive, and censorious as he is in Rutledge's mind, then little wonder he died friendless and alone. After eight times out with this unyielding and unfriendly presence, I find his running commentary tedious, irritating, and extraneous to the mystery.

Hamish's continued and unabated presence is also beginning to stretch credibility. If he is truly present, then Rutledge is insane and shouldn't be able to withstand the constant carping much longer, at least while continuing to solve emotionally taxing mysteries one after another. If he's a manifestation of Rutledge's guilt, then why doesn't this otherwise insightful and rational man consult someone and get some help in exorcising the ghost - an alienist (as psychiatrists were known then), or an Anglican clergyman trained as an exorcist, or his new almost-girl friend, the mysterious psychic Mrs. Channing?

Otherwise, "A Long Shadow" is up to Todd's usual standard. The characters are well-drawn, as is the depiction of English village life, with its class system, its insiders, its outsiders, and its endless gossip and secrets. The creation of the brooding presence of Frith's Woods was a masterstroke, hinting at ancient, forgotten evils and England's pagan past. The wood's long shadow has affected the village of Dudlington more than its inhabitants know, just as it affects Rutledge who's combating a new enemy, an anonymous stalker.

While it's a wonder that Ian Rutledge stays so calm with Hamish gnawing away at him inside and an assassin lurking outside, I am also puzzled as to how much longer Superintendent Bowles is going to be allowed to persecute Inspector Rutledge. An interesting aspect of the series is that chronologically each mystery picks up after the last, weeks, sometimes days, after the other ends. Rutledge has shown an extraordinary degree of professional success in a matter of months since his return to the Force, capturing notorious murderers, ferreting out serial killers, solving crimes that were not even known to occur, and saving potential victims. In the real world, he'd be a celebrity, at least among his colleagues, not the passive victim of a petty tyrant and jealous superior who, among other things, seems to be on the take.

5 out of 5 stars english mystery readers rejoice!.......2007-09-25

Here is the perfect book for you. These books by Charles Todd are absolute perfection! There are about 10 in the series so far. They are mysteries set between the World Wars in England. The main character is Ian Rutledge, an ex-officer in World War 1, who has rejoined Scotland Yard. Dectective Rutledge is haunted by the voice of Hamish who was his sergeant in the war. Rutledge shot and killed Hamish when he refused a direct order to lead his men into battle. Hamish taunts Rutledge as well as gives him advice about the cases he tries to solve.

I know this sounds pretty far fetched but wait, this is not even the most unbelievable part. These stories are written by two Americans, a man and his mother. One lives in New York and one lives in North Carolina. I don't know how any of it works. But is does. These are the most interesting English mysteries I have ever read. And they are so well written!

A Long Shadow is the 8th in the series. You really should read them in order. Goggle Charles Todd and find out the order.

3 out of 5 stars A cheesy fantasy.......2004-03-08

I've been anxious to try Blaylock's work for a while, but this was the only book of his that I found among three bookstores. While not a bad book by any means, it's not terribly good either. It plods. Several sentences jumped out as clunkers. As an adventure story, in fact, I'd rate this pretty low. But, though briefly at first it comes across like a cheap Tolkien knock-off, I consider more of a kind of fantasy character piece than an adventure. There are some interesting moments in the book, almost worthwhile to read the book for. (I really liked the bits about cheese making.) But it was, simply put, a book that failed to keep me wanting to read it. In fact, several times, I put it down to read other books.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous twice over.......2002-11-27

Reading this book has a wonderful effect on a person, and every one I have ever reccomended to was so grateful after reading it. It is charming, lyrical, and full of whimsey... yet it is an adventure first and foremost. Blaycock has a writing style that makes the words sound delicious in your mind, as each carefully chosen word fits together like a song. He is also at his humerous best here, and will have you chuckling along. That is when your mouth is not watering for the food that he describes here as an intregal part of the adventure. He makes the character a part of you by making it very real and not sparing the details that somehow make you experiance the book with all of your senses. That is if you like the sound smell and feel of warm crackly fires on cold nights, hand ground coffee roasted on the fire, cheese from the Master Cheeser, dark nutty beer, thick dark fresh bread, reading books for hours and hours, and the scent of pipe tobacco as much as this character does.
The sequel is called "The Dissapearing Dwarf" but I saw it listed with a typo at this site as "The Dissapearg Dwarf".

3 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I was looking for...........2002-08-21

I felt like I was reading a grownup version of a Dr. Seusse book... The story was good, but for me there was too much silliness. In fact, I kept expecting ryhmes. If the silliness was removed and a little more hard details added, it would be a fine book. But, I do not think that this is what the author intended.

This is a light hearted look at fantasy/fiction. Easy to read, hard to get lost. Possibly even a fun/funny book...

I am not normally a fantasy reader, but this book has had so many good reviews that I decided to give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Bacon and cheese, a pipe and a book.......2001-05-18

As has been mentioned before, the whimsy and fancy of this book should have made it a classic. However, it has been overlooked and nearly forgotten.

As a tale for adults, it stands up well with passages that stimulate the imagination. As a tale for children, it overflows with silliness and fun, but also includes a few moral lessons on the value of work and importance of keeping your word. It is an ideal book for an adult to read to a child. The end veers off into a scene of near Lovecraftian nature, disturbing and frightening in an oddly amusing way. However, the tone quickly returns to light fantasy, and the characters all return home, happier, wiser, and richer. In all, one of my all-time favorite books.

5 out of 5 stars The Elfin Ship.......2000-01-31

If you like Wind in the Willows or The Hobbit, you will love this book. The author describes well our love and appreciation for the comforts of home, but at the same time our natural desire for adventures and excitement on a fantasy quest. Great fun - over and over again.

If Lucifer could communicate with us he would have written this book.It definitely enlightens and ignites the imagination of the reader--especially mine.I have never read a book so inspiring and as bold as this one.I have reread it several times, learned something new each time and it is incredible to think that this book is fictional.I love the Book of Philosophies and the intrigue in regards to the Lazarus legend and the Apocolyptic message.I have recommended this book as an excellent read which will open the readers' minds to other possibilities and view points that differ from the commonly told versions expounded for centuries.I give it FIVE Stars for entertainment, enlightenment and education but most importantly it gave Lucifer a chance to speak to all of us through this fascinating book by John A. DeVito.I'm looking forward to his next book.....There is nothing like going against the grain---it's fun!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Please Read if You Have Faith.......2007-05-01

I just purchased this book on Amazon and read it immediately.

I was born and raised a Catholic and this book caused me to question every sacrament, commandment, and the history of my faith.

It was extremely well written and paralleled many stories in the bible but with a different twist. The book was very well thought out as the author provided an opposing view to every story we learned about in Sunday School.

The story follows the "angels" and their interactions in heaven. They create man but not like it was told in the bible. They needed a being with souls whom they could rule with fear and required worship to give them their power. After neaderthal, cro-magnon man, they finally got the model correct with the creation of modern man.

Satan is the Philosopher and does not agree with "He Who Is Three" the most powerful angel and essentially God. "God" wants to create man to rule and dominate as sheep while Satan thinks that it is not their role and that humans should be allowed to form their own destiny. Satan is not the only angel to feel that way and soon there is a revolt to the plan. There is a war in the Heavens where Satan and his disciples are banished and bound to the Earth.

The story begins with Adam and Eve and unlike the bible and temptation, it is about free will and being able to learn, and to make choices. We learn early on the God is truly vengeful and a cruel entity bent on crushing humanity if they will not subject themselves to his rule.

Satan in the book is a friend to humanity who encourages the people to develop their free will as humans have the power for greatness and should worship no one.

"He Who Is Three" is concerned with the lack of faith and hence his lack of power so one of his three leaves to become part of a human named Jesus. The story follows his travels and there is an extremely interesting conversation between Satan and Jesus where Jesus begins to question God, his Father's motives. He thinks back to his conversation with Satan and briefly believes him to be correct. Jesus begs his Father (God) to forgo the torture he will be subjected to but God is vengeful for his conversation with Satan and tells Jesus that he will experience more pain then any human known.

This is a fantastic read that will cause you to really think about everything you were taught in Sunday school.

Enjoy this incredible blend of religion, science, and history. I sure did!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Kind of a mishmash.......2006-12-30

I almost didn't make it past the third chapter. Certain conventions - "lost" manuscript, quest for mysterious prophetic chroniclers blah blah blah - and the forced Elizabethan writing style were almost too hackneyed to get past.

But, I paid for the darned thing, so I decided to stick with it.

And it got better, in later chapters. I liked the Chapter of Philosophies for its rationalistic take on the Beatitudes. I would really have liked an expanded treatment of the relationship between Pharoah and Moses, and more on the relationship between Jesus and the-rest-of-God (it was a bit like Kazantzakis-light, here and showed real promise; alas, abandoned too quickly). When De Vito writes characters with conflicts and emotions, and allows them a bit of actual character development, he does well. It just seems like he hadn't decided what kind of book to write here, before he actually started typing.

In the end, literally, it disappointed. I suppose a book purporting to be prophecy of the end-times can't get too specific, but the conclusion was really unsatisfying.

So, 3 stars for some nice speculation on the motivations and struggles of some well-known characters. No more than three stars because of the trite packaging and tonal inconsistencies.

    5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2006-11-18

An excellent fantasy that explores the motives of the angels, both fallen and perceived holy. Vicious in spots, eye opening in others, this book does what good contemplative fantasy should do; it makes you think. "What if?" can be a dangerous concept to the indoctrinated proletariat. It requires an open mind, which will be the cause of negative criticism from the corps of the Christian right. An outstanding book that was easy to read and hard to put down.

4 out of 5 stars An Almost Compelling Retelling...........2006-07-16

The constant typos, grammatical errors and misuse of old English aside, which are very off-putting as some of the grammar buffs here have pointed out, this is one of the more intriguing and disturbing concepts I've ever come across. It has a certain haunting something about it that crawls my spine. Even if it's just the product of one person's imagination, it makes you wonder where such notions can have come from.

Any Christian, whether they admit it or not, knows there is something wrong with the bible story and they want to hear the irreconcilables reconciled, the holes plugged. Which leaves the door wide open for a retelling. If you believe at all in the divinity of Jesus (which I personally don't, but strangely, this inverse version of the story, from the archenemy's viewpoint, made me actually consider it!), this is about the only version of the story that makes sense of the insensible. And with all the particulars covered. I don't know if I can bring myself all the way to saying it's "believable", but the explanations offered for some of the unbelievables in the traditional story do ring more true than the swiss cheese version you get elsewhere. If the writing had been better, the premise could have been truly compelling. Alas, the Devil, being a master manipulator in one doctrine, an expelled but once great Teacher in the other doctrine, would by rights have to also be a master communicator. So the bad grammar kills the illusion of authenticity. However, if I learned that in the Devil's own dimension, these faults of grammar were the norm, I'd be truly frightened.

At the time of this writing, I've only reviewed one other book on Amazon.com, The Life of Pi. That book promised and failed miserably to make me believe in God. This book, written from The Adversary's perspective, ironically, came closer to achieving that than anything I've read so far, including my own Christian upbringing. But that's because the evidence of my eyes tells me that if God exists, he can't possibly be a good guy.

Originally published in 1985, The Frog Commissary Cookbook harks back to a time when a reader wouldn't be too likely to choke upon reading a chowder recipe that called for a quart of half-and-half. Those were the days, author Steven Poses suggests in his foreword, when you could graduate from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in sociology, put in some time in the Peace Corps and the antiwar movement, work your way up from busboy to sous chef in a mainstream French restaurant and, with a copy of Jane Jacob's Death and Life of Great American Cities tucked under one arm and a total investment of $35,000, open a restaurant all your own in Philadelphia. Such was the success of Frog, its eclectic menu reaching out to many a flavor-starved palate, that seven years later Poses could reopen with a $1 million budget and expand into other restaurant ventures.

The Frog Commissary Cookbook rises out of the experience of Poses's restaurants and catering business. It's not an easy collection to finger, to size up and categorize with a single swipe of the pen. And that makes for some exciting page turning. This would be a good book to have on the shelf and open when you simply don't know what to do or what you are looking for.

You'll find goodies like Bourbon Pecans (this "Hors d'Oeuvres" section ends with 25 quick ideas; the same is true of the "Salads" and "Pizzas" sections), Chicken in Romaine Leaves with Lime Hot Sauce, Corn and Clam Chowder, a plethora of creative salads and dressings, Seafood Stew with Aioli, Stir-fried Duck with Chinese Sausage, Italian Scrambled Eggs with Asparagus and Prosciutto, and Pumpkin Waffles. This book is all over the place, leaving a trail of deliciousness in its wake.

According to Poses, exemplary care was taken to work out the recipes in an apartment kitchen and not on a professional stove. While all the recipes have proved popular over the years in Poses's restaurants, they were all written from scratch for the home cook. --Schuyler Ingle

                    Book Description

A little storefront restaurant opened in a downtown neighborhood of Philadelphia in 1973. It was simply named Frog. Out of that little eatery grew a collection of some of America's most innovative and successful restaurants, including Frog, The Commissary, and a catering operation known as Frog/Commissary Catering. From their founding chef/restaurateur, Steven Poses, and his colleagues Anne Clark and Becky Roller, comes a sumptuous cookbook that brings together hundreds of kitchen-tested recipes, tips, and information about their personal approach to food preparation.

Organized by meal course, the book contains a multitude of creative recipes, adapted for serving at home and reflecting a quixotic, multiethnic blend of foods and ingredients. Full of insider tips on food preparation and service and delightful anecdotes, this bountiful feast of information is also a lavish treat for the eyes, with Becky Roller's wonderful drawings and calligraphy gracing each page. The Frog/Commissary Cookbook is the perfect introduction to a very special culinary world--and the ideal addition to every cook's home library.

5 out of 5 stars The best, most reliable cookbook I've ever owned........2007-06-11

Absolutely crammed full of wonderful, flavorful recipes from beginning to end. I've owned this book since about 1988 and still use it more regularly for entertaining than any other. My favorites are the chicken satay, orzo salad, siamese chicken curry, grilled marinated swordfish, roast duck with Thai curry glaze, oatmeal sunflower seed pancakes, and pecan pie. Wait! I forgot the stir fry sauces and all those little suggestions at the end of chapters, and the broccoli and the gratin and the cookies and the ... You get the picture. Buy it.

                    5 out of 5 stars A classic!.......2007-04-08

I've had this cookbook since it was first published. I still turn to it for new recipes and I have adopted some as "my own"........I weed out periodically those cookbooks that I thought I would love but just don't.......this one will never get "weeded".........it's still great after all of these years......it's a classic.

5 out of 5 stars The best cookbook in my collection.......2007-04-05

This is my favorite cookbook. I haven't found a bad recipe yet and every time I serve one of these recipes, I get requests. The carrot cake is awesome, siamese chicken curry, curried chicken salad, hazelnut greenbeans...love, love this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes & great memories!.......2007-03-10

This is my all-time favorite cookbook! It is a constant reminder to me of the restaurants that I loved to frequent during the restaurant renaissance in the mid-60's in Philly. The Frog was my personal favorite. I use this cookbook all the time and have given it many, many, many times as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Chili from Heaven.......2007-01-10

I am a transplanted Philadelphian now living in Florida, and I was chatting with a vegetarian co-worker about chili receipes. When Bam! all of a sudden I was transported back in time to 1985 Philadelphia, and the Frog Commissary at lunch. Very cozy (cramped with a smile), plain and chic at the same time, with lots of diverse people hunkering down for the fantastic chow. The vegetarian chili was simply the best and I knew I had to make it, pronto! Lucky for me the Frog cook book is still available and I just ordered it - the reviews are fantastic!
