Book Description

Halloween Night, 1954.  A young, film-obsessed scriptwriter has just been hired at one of the great studios.  An anonymous investigation leads from the giant Maximus Films backlot to an eerie graveyard separated from the studio by a single wall.  There he makes a terrifying discovery that thrusts him into a maelstrom of intrigue and mystery -- and into the dizzy exhilaration of the movie industry at the height of its glittering power.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Whimsy.......2007-01-10

Bradbury can be whimsical -- and even silly -- at times. He has a bent for humor, and it is apparent in this book. Undoubtedly it is based on his movie script-writing experiences and his work with his friend, Ray Harryhausen. Yet, overall, it failed to absorb my attention as much as his other, more sinister (noir) works. It's a nice addition to your library if you are a dyed-in-the-wool Bradbury fan. I passed my copy along to someone after reding it, as I also did with "Let's All Kill Constance," a title related to this one.

3 out of 5 stars Charmed, I'm Sure.......2005-05-10

It's a sweet and simple fact of life: some people will like it, and some people will not. However, many pros and cons of this mystery novel are defiant and absolute. This novel contains well developed, attractive characters complete with their own pet peeves and since of humor. Also, there are remarkable philosophical questions with ample room for discussion and debate such as the "going home again" theme and the symbolism of the "another tale of two cities" within one city. However, some unappealing aspects of this novel included the fact it wasn't that much of a mystery. The clues, hints, and evidence given by Bradbury were obvious gestures to the truth and conclusion of the story. Other minor negative details such as one or two lacking characters and poor transitions withheld two stars from this mystery book. Otherwise, many compliments and much respect to Ray Bradbury. Charmed, I'm sure.

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.......2003-11-10

I remember an old tag line for a copy of The Martian Chronicles I had indicating that there was no writer quite like Ray Bradbury and that still holds true today. While certainly not in the upper echelon of his past classics, A Graveyard for Lunatics is certainly a page turner that keeps hold of your interest from start to finish. Bradbury uses Hollywood as a vessel for the much larger themes of death, fame, and religion and wraps it in a murder mystery. Unfortunately, and the reason I withhold a star, is that it becomes a little too easy to figure out a huge piece of the puzzle and knowing or assuming that as you read takes something away from the suspense. That being said, the plot is still very tightly constructed and the characters are, for the most part, very well drawn. A nice piece of work from the master.

4 out of 5 stars Bradbury continues the magic, this time in Hollywood........2002-02-22

Setting this novel during the glory days of Big Studio Hollywood, in which he himself was an earnest young screenwriter, Ray Bradbury sets out to create a murder mystery in which a twenty years-dead body is found on a ladder leaning against a wall between a graveyard and the movie studio next door. Over-the-top Hollywood characters and wannabes, "beasts" and monsters, and faux settings, such as Notre Dame, Calvary, and even the speaker's grandparents' house in Green Town, Illinois, fill this book with the illusions in which the film industry excels, while the machinations of ego-driven moguls provide motivations for murder.

No one should read this novel expecting a hard-boiled mystery, however. Bradbury's obvious love of people and of life itself is so heartfelt and overwhelming that it makes any sense of toughness unbelievable--and there are many other reasons to enjoy this book. Grounded by Midwestern values, fundamentally decent, and lacking the ego which seems to drive the rest of the industry, Bradbury shines in describing a mad Hollywood, "where great elephant ideas go to die. A graveyard for lunatics," where men so dedicate their lives to the creation of illusions that they often lose sight of reality. His wacky imagination flourishes, and it is clear that despite his sometimes flippant, tongue-in-cheek observations, his irony, and his criticism of Hollywood excess, that he loves the place and the exotic characters he meets there.

With imagery and descriptions that bring to life every aspect of studio activity, trenchant philosophical observations inserted casually (almost as throwaways), self-deprecating humor, and visions of plain folks challenging the studio bigwigs, Bradbury's mystery ambles toward an almost amiable conclusion. For the lover of Bradbury, this is another chance to share his visions and his enthusiasm for a life lived honestly. Most readers will undoubtedly share the feelings of Constance, who tells speaker/Bradbury, "How lucky to be inside your skin...Don't ever change. We stupid doomsayers, cynics, monsters laugh, but we need you. Otherwise, Merlin dies, or a carpenter fixing the Round Table saws it crooked, or the guy who oils the armor substitutes cat pee. Live forever. Promise?" Mary Whipple

WOW! From the moment I saw the cover winking at me in the Cal State Fullerton bookstore 12 years ago, this has been my favorite book af all time! Mr. Bradbury mixes up a concoction of murder, mystery, and the Golden Age of movies and studio heads to delight the reader. His character development and authenticity ring true to anyone who has ever seen a silent film or a great science fiction epic of the 1950's. I just can't say enough about this book! It is one of the few that I take the time to go back and read over and over again like a chance meeting of old, comfortable friends (and according to my grandfather, Herb Hinthorne, Mr. Bradbury used to be the kid in rollerskates all over Hollywood - he often skated into Henry's, an old restaurant on Hollywood Blvd. where my grandfather hung out with his waitress-mom, looking for the movie stars!). Get your hands on a copy of this book, and enjoy!

Take Alice in Wonderland, Dark City, and Pilgrim's Progress. Put them in a blender with a lot of dry ice. Mix and serve in a dirty, broken glass. And that's just the first chapter of Some Things Are Better Left Unplugged. This postmodern fable examines the need for myth, metaphor and identity. The story satirizes many of our everyday obsessions, including the pursuit of wealth and materialism; the thirst for empty spectacles and violence; and the need for obtaining social status. This absurd tale will delight you in the tradition of Camus' The Stranger and Beckett's Waiting for Godot.

Pretentious gobbledygook or an unparalleled anti-epic of the surreal and absurd? Read on and find out.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent satire about our society's nee for spectacles and useless consumer goods.......2007-08-23

I loved it. One of the weirdest novels I've ever read. Sakowski picks apart everything we are taught to believe and reveals the silliness of it all. Through a surreal lenses he catalogues everything that is entailed in being human. He goes against the modern novel format and creates an evocative anti-novel. I'm going to seek out everything he wrote.

4 out of 5 stars This book surprised me.......2006-06-16

After discovering Eraserhead Press through reading a book by Carlton Mellick III that a friend leant to me I decided to check out what else they have published and bought this book. In the description, this book says that it is post-modern but I wasn't exactly sure what that meant in relation to literature so I looked it up on wikipedia. One of the definitions described postmodernism as:
"A culturally pluralistic and profoundly interconnected global society lacking any single dominant center of political power, communication, or intellectual production."

Which I think really sums up the setting of this book. First of all, the main character has no name, he's known only as "The man". In fact, none of the other characters have names either. At first this was a little off putting, but after a couple of chapters the allegorical purpose became more clear. This story is interesting and funny. Set in an extremely surreal landscape with anthropomorphic appliances and personified animals every object, plant, and action seems to have a deeper meaning. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in art films or offbeat literature.

            4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-09-03

Take a journey into a surreal fantasy world like that of Alice's Wonderland, only this one could never be turned into a Disney film no matter how many songs are put into it. This is a dark, harsh realm where logic is left outside the manhole and the irrational is king cat. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars NOT to be missed!.......2004-09-21

The last review for this book should be ignored! I wasn't going to buy this book originally just because I read the last review. Thank God I changed my mind! After LOVING several books released through Eraserhead Press, I decided to take my chances with Some Things Are Better Left Unplugged despite the bad review. I have to wonder if the last reviewer even read the book at all. He calls it "just dumb." How can this be dumb? You might not understand all of it, but that doesn't mean it's dumb. It is one of the more intelligent books out there. It is very odd and deliciously imaginative, but as literate as Kafka. It's like Lovecraft re-imagined by Terry Gilliam. I bet the other reviewer was just expecting something like Fight Club. Yeah, Fight Club is different and a great read but really not all that weird. This book is utterly outlandish. I'm not going to get into the plot but it starts out strange and just gets stranger. This is the only book by Sakowski I've been able to find but I hope there will be more available in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Put This On Your Reading List, Twice........2003-04-30

UNPLUGGED has been billed as an anti-novel and believe me it delivers. Sure you've read plenty of books with anti-heroes but how about anti-villains of the polite and genteel variety? UNPLUGGED is an ambitious novel, dense with layers of meaning and rife with irony. Sakowski has a gift for illustrating the absurd.

Follow our "hero", The Man, as he makes his way through countless ridiculous and chilling situations. Picture a kingdom of marionettes ruled by an Emperor, a penguin of course. Meet half-crazed citizens clutching their most prized possessions close to them, their misfortunes. Sounds a bit like your average cocktail party in the modern day.

Stylistically UNPLUGGED is like an amputating scalpel under operating theater lights. Razor sharp and clinical, Sakowski's words cut to the heart of the matter while casting glittering reflections on countless topics. The combination of stripped bare prose with complex images and ideas creates a dizzying effect which makes you wonder how such a slim volume can contain so much. Put this one down on your reading list, twice.

Hailed for his decisive victory over a Royal Navy squadron on Lake Erie in September 1813 and best known for his after-action report proclamation We have met the enemy and they are ours, Oliver Hazard Perry was one the early U.S. Navy s most famous heroes. In this modern, scholarly reassessment of the man and his career, Professor David Skaggs emphasizes Perry s place in naval history as an embodiment of the code of honor, an exemplar of combat courage, and a symbol of patriotism to his fellow officers and the American public. It is the first biography of Perry to be published in more than a quarter of a century and the first to offer an even-handed analysis of his career.

After completing a thorough examination of primary sources, Skaggs traces Perry s development from a midshipman to commodore where he personified the best in seamanship, calmness in times of stress, and diplomatic skills. But this work is not a hagiographic treatment, for it offers a candid analysis of Perry s character flaws, particularly his short temper and his sometimes ineffective command and control procedures during the battle of Lake Erie. Skaggs also explains how Perry s short but dramatic naval career epitomized the emerging naval professionalism of the young republic, and he demonstrates how the Hero of Lake Erie fits into the most recent scholarship concerning the role of post-revolutionary generation in the development of American national identity. Finally, Skaggs explores in greater detail than anyone before the controversy over the conduct of his Lake Erie second, Jesse Duncan Elliott, that raged on for over a quarter century after Perry s death in 1819.

A great subject and not much covered except by Daniel Defoe 250 years ago. Good bios of the major characters. Very good explanations of the period, the hows and whys of piracy. Since piracy by its very nature is a secretive profession there isnt much in print either contemporary or historical. The author certainly has done his research, the notes and bibliography section of this book runs over 60 pages. The Madagascar pirates must have been the most successful thieves in history and the author is able to convey to us today just how much booty they managed to steal, billions in todays values. And many of them got away with it. The book is facinating yet doesnt read like a novel nor is it only a dry scholarly tome. Where able the author conveys both motivations and personalities of his characters. A very good read esp, if one is interested in the development of Madagascar.

                2 out of 5 stars STNG #8 - The Captain's Honor - An interesting concept!.......2003-07-20

As homage to Star Trek The Original Series episode "Bread and Circuses," "The Captain's Honor" authors bring characters from that fateful planet forward into the twenty fourth century. In concept, the premise to this story is an ideal concept, in practice though; it's not carried forward very well. Given the conclusion of that TOS episode, one would find it difficult to believe that the culture of that planet would've advanced enough that in the twenty fourth century they'd be given a starship to command and crew for even in Science Fiction and especially in Gene Roddenberry's universe, the suspension of disbelief must be plausible, but that is hardly accomplished in this early Star Trek The Next Generation novel. That is not to say that this novel is not worth reading because I believe all of the Star Trek novels are worth reading, this one just doesn't stack up too well with the rest.

                The premise:

The planet Tenara is being has been attacked several times by M'Dok Empire causing Starfleet to call in the Enterprise and another Federation starship, the Centurion. As a point of conflict, Captain Picard feels that negotiation must be the first strategy they use but Captain Sejanus of the Centurion feels that they must take a harder stance against the M'Dok. All the while, the people of Tenara who are suffering these attacks must choose the path that must be taken to attempt to end these attacks...

                While not too heavy on the action, this novel does present a thought provoking, if not plausible, set of circumstances within the Federation and should be taken for what it is, an early STNG novel that was written when the show was very young and the overall feel of the characters and the series hadn't quite gelled yet. {ssintrepid}

3 out of 5 stars Reasonably well-written, but overall mediocre........2001-12-22

There isn't really much action in this book; it's mostly hinted at rather than actually described. This is understandable, as the book is intended to be more of a look at the philosophy of the Federation and Starfleet, rather than an action-adventure story. I found the characterizations intriguing, particularly that of the characters original to this book; mostly (with the exception of Worf and to a lesser extent, Picard) the established characters are background filler. But I found the basic concept of the Magna Romans (from Original series "Bread and Circuses") having advanced far enough in 80 years to have joined the Federation and been entrusted with a Starship of their own more than a bit dubious; I doubt that either the Federation or Starfleet would be that foolish. Further, I found it disappointing that the people who were too pacifistic to defend themselves (but not too pacifistic to ask for help so that somebody ELSE could defend them) were never actually forced to face the consequences of their actions; further, those who were unwilling to allow them the luxury of that hypocrisy were portrayed as villains. Granted, changing their culture without permission was villainous, but it would not have been out of line for Picard (or Sejanus) to refuse to help those who would not attempt to help themselves.

Clearly, the authors intend to bring Sejanus back in some future story. For all I know, they may have already done so; if they have, I've not read it yet.

                4 out of 5 stars Honorable effort.......2000-04-13

The return of the Romans from "Bread and Circuses" is unexpected and appreciated, though the use of a Constitution-class vessel is anachronistic, in my opinion. The plot with the cat-like aliens is secondary to the real thrust of the novel: that cultural differences spawn different ways of doing things. The dress of the ship, the holodeck sequences, what foods the Neo-Romans eat, and, most of all, their attempts to assimilate a culture into their own, are NOT Federation standard... but they do make sense in the Roman ethos. An excellent contrast with everything Star Trek has shown us before. Hail Ceasar!

4 out of 5 stars A follow-on novel involving those Romans in Bread & Circuses.......1998-11-20

This novel told about how 2 StarFleet captains, Picard and an officer from the Magna Romans (from the TOS episode "Bread and Circuses") squared off against each other in helping a planet deal with 6 ft tall cat-like critters who invade the planet and eat the people. Picard wants to negotiate and help the cats feed themselves (the cats invade the planet because their race is starving). The Romans want to get rid of them (they don't like cats).

There's a subplot involving a Roman officer romancing one of Picard's crew, but who gets killed by the Roman captain. The only good thing about this book is that it follows up on the Bread and Circuses episode into STTNG's 24th century.

Chief Warrant Officer Rachel Southwell has been offered a position in the Pentagon which will bring her closer to home and her parents.

Yet her assignment has as much danger as a war zone. Captain Nathan Fordham is getting advise from his brother, Julian in CID on what methods to use to entrap the abusive General Donner. He hopes to have Rachel's help in getting the evidence needed to bring down the two star General.

The trouble is that the General could ruin both of their careers or even have them shipped out of the country.
Nathan has emotional baggage from his own father's neglect and Rachel has issues with men and their staying power. She has learned to depend on no one other than herself.

With her father recovering from a stroke and her mother needing help she doesn't want to cross the General too stongly but the tension of waiting for Donner to make advances was telling on her.

Nathan was determined to watch Rachel's back but Donner kept sending him on other errands. [sneaky little devil] Of course the General's wife was no help at all. She liked the statis quo.
Then there was Allison, Rachel wanted to protect her from Donner.

And Donner was a puzzle - exhibiting little signs that Rachel failed to pick up on when they were in Hawaii - though she did make a life threatening jump to get away from him. They unexpectedly bumped into Senator Zemin when she was least expected, which displeased General Donner.

Quite an intriguing story - really neat characters, especially Adam-Ant - decently paced action - confused hormones [again] - what a way to end.

From the first glimpse, Captain Nathan Fordham knew he was in trouble with Chief Warrant Officer Rachel Southwell who "dazzled him with her contradictions and intrigued him with her complexity." But there is no time for romance on this assignment. Working in conjunction with his brother, a Criminal Investigation Division major, Nate has a plan. He needs a woman without fear to make her vulnerable and with the strength to go after the big brass. He knows that Major General Walter Cornelius Donner must be stopped before he destroys another woman under his command with his sexual harassment.

Rachel can outrun, out think, and out motivate almost any man in the Army. She willing accepts the most difficult assignment at the Pentagon in exchange for an opportunity to be closer to the son she left behind when she enlisted. With his life threatening asthma, Rachel needs to get him listed as dependent quickly. Rachel knows that failure on this assignment will end her career. With the growing attraction to Nate, she needs the assignment resolved just as quickly. Unfortunately, the general and a mysterious stalker are not above using her vulnerabilities to their own advantage.

Author Elizabeth Ashtree pens a powerful tale of honor in the military with A CAPTAIN'S HONOR. Women who have endured sexual harassment will find themselves impressed by Ashtree's careful rendering of such a devastating crime. Unfortunately, the secondary plot of stalking detracts from the power of the narrative. Nevertheless, Rachel's struggles to cope with such a challenging assignment will keep the pages turning. Nate's ambivalence over his role in bringing her into such a difficult situation will likewise strike a sympathetic cord with readers. A memorable military romance, A CAPTAIN'S HONOR comes highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars exciting military romance.......2002-10-10

After consulting with his brother, a Criminal Investigation Division major, Army Captain Nathan Fordham decides it is time to stop the sexual harassment by Major General Walter Cornelius Donner. Nathan, as the military aide to the Two-Star General, knows how odious Donner is towards women. He believes the new personal assistant may have the right stuff to end the predatory career of Donner for it will take an intrepid woman not afraid of retaliation towards herself or her family. Chief Warrant Officer Rachel Southwell would prefer to avoid the land mines described by Nathan. However, she has no options because of the needs of her son. Rachel agrees to trap the General knowing failure means her career.

As Rachel with Nathan's support does her best to stop Donner, a stalker begins intimidating her and her family. Nathan knows that is not part of the MO of his superior officer so is at a loss as to whom is threatening Rachel. He also knows that he loves her, but realizes he must do nothing to hurt the case. Nathan wonders whether either of them will survive the wrath of General Officer club that prefers protecting all members even one violating the Army value code.

A CAPTAIN'S HONOR is an exciting military sexual harassment case that readers will enjoy as Donner acts more like a sheik running a fiefdom with a harem. The stalking subplot adds tension, but takes away from the powerful look at a superior abusing power to take advantage of an employee. Fans will salute Elizabeth Ashtree for this strong military romance.

This book has no useful information in it. The pictures are pretty, but I don't spend good money on a book just to look at the pictures. Even the ideas aren't all that creative. If I had cupboards full of antiques and drawers full of beautiful linens, I wouldn't need a book to tell me how to use them. Other, better books show the same techniques and ideas, and show them with materials more easily available to us mere mortals.

The example that really did me in was the little girl's birthday party... with crocheted lace doilies on the drinks glasses, and all the little girls in Edwardian-style lace dresses. PLEASE! You want an example of a pretty child's birthday party, get the Shabby Chic entertaining book.

2 out of 5 stars No new ideas for a woman of culture.......2005-01-12

I regret this purchase. As one reviewer said, this is just a coffetable book. It doesnt introduce any new idea to an educated woman. Who cant roll a napkin and tie a ribbon on it ??? It doesnt take a professional caterer to know that !!! Funny, but an out of print 1960's cookbook by Mary and Vincent Price ``A Treasury.....'' showed far more intricate, elegant, and exquisite napkin foldings. The utensils showed in Tabletops are not even for very dining ! Worse, an old item was made to pass off as an antique centerpiece and I am a professional antique collector. I lived in Europe and this book does not deserve space in any European home or library. What I saw here, I see frequently in crafts store windows in small towns. DONT BUY. I got instead ``Perfect Setting'' by Peri Wolfman (?) and finally, I got something intelligent with truly new ideas to captivate an intelligent woman. At best, give this book to a grade school kid.

3 out of 5 stars Use as coffee table book only.......2004-12-10

The author uses many of her antiques to decorate the table which is nice if you own any yourself. Many ideas were very "english", maybe a little too elegant, not the kind of book for someone looking for different ideas using everyday items or at least items you can find in everyday stores. Nice coffee table book but not easy to recreate her tabletops.

4 out of 5 stars Good basics, easy to follow.......2003-10-18

Great pictures and a great way to get started entertaining. Also, easy and inexpensive ideas wtih decoration (flowers, etc. you can get right from your own garden)

3 out of 5 stars Check it out at the Library first.......2001-09-22

I'm glad I didn't "buy" this book and went to the Library
first. I was looking for more "whimsical" ideas and the
ones offered in this book seem to be the basic, traditional
                          ones.
